Conditions aren't great but this is a tough aul watch. Castlebar will be happy enough to be only 3 down but they don't look like they have the forwards capable of winning this

don’t seem to know how to defend without fouling either…

    So the SFs are:

    Knockmore / Ballagh v Ballina / Breaffy

Breaffy probably the most impressive this weekend

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 518 ✭✭✭boosabum

I thoughtKnockmore can't play ballagh as they were in the same group?

That's my understanding too - we play either Ballina or Breaffy I think

I think they misread your post.

It's one of Knockmore or Ballagh to play one of Ballina or Breaffy.

Could this be breaffys last best chance to land a county title? Hard to imagine they will still be contenders after the O’Shea brothers have left the stage…

Got 11 out of 12 predictions right for the quarter finals in a competition in work.

I think it'll be Ballaghdereen v Breaffy final. Too many injuries for Ballina with Regan, Murray and Swanny missing. Breaffy have been the best team I've seen this year and despite a 12 point win we were poor on Saturday night, Garrymore handed it to us on a plate. Add to that all the injuries around the middle and it's hard to make a case for us. @parlance you know I've been hot on Breaffy since the Ballintubber game, backed them at 5-1

It's been a poor championship, low on quality bar Breaffy

I hope your fine form continues G&R. Too many years following Mayo and Breaffy to be getting too excited but yesterday was a huge win. Momentum is a massive thing and Breaffy and Ballagh certainly have it.

If both got through, I would be putting the house on Ballagh. That would by our Tyrone.

Who has ever associated McEntee for the goalkeeping switch?. I’ve not seen a single comment or commentator even mention McEntee in the same sentence as goalkeeper switches until the above.

Watched the Breaffy match yesterday on MayoGAATV. Decent game considering the awful conditions.

I was delighted for Breaffy. Westport are obviously a very good team as well, but weren't as strong as Breaffy when it came to a bit of physicality.

Aidan O'Shea is some man. Great performance by the big man. Got 6 points as well. Ruane was good too in the second half. The other tall midfielder (can't remember his name) is decent as well. Did one unreal catch in the middle of the park.

It would normally be set up as a Knockmore Ballina final. However, with the injuries in both teams, it really levels the playing field. Will be really interesting next weekend.

We've been saying that for a few years but yeah, you'd have to imagine when Aidan retires, he'll be hard replaced so this year looks like a great chance for them. The bookies have it as

    Ballina evens

    Breaffy 5/2

    Knockmore 4/1

    Ballagh 11/2

Crazy odds on Ballina considering that they'll have doubts over a couple of their main men

This Sunday coming? So only a week between the QFs and SFs. Odd they aren't keeping to the 2 week gap.

When's the final itself I wonder?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,773 ✭✭✭MacDanger

Yeah, strange alright to only have a week break. I presume there'll be a 2 week break to the final

Final is usually bank holiday weekend in October but mayo champions have been drawn away to English champions in the Connaught draw, hence the quick turnaround between QF and semi finals to allow two week break to final

Moy Davitts v Crossmolina in the intermediate final after 1 point wind today

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,014 ✭✭✭HBC08

Cross are a very well drilled side this year. They were similar last year but just got caught on the hop by Mitchell's B.

A young manager learning his trade and doing very well, bringing in Maughan was a good move too.

I hope they go on and win it now.

Hard luck @parlance, that was tense. Some win for us, some gang of kids on at the end, could do with Kevin back for the final

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,758 ✭✭✭irishgeo

    Breaffy threw that away.

AOS shouldn't have taken either free kick at the end of full time and extra time.

The misplaced handpass that led to the 2nd Knockmore goal was criminal as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,835 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

I wouldn't agree with him not taking the one at end of normal time, big players step up at big moments.

Not sure why he was taking the ones at the end, he nearly got a goal from the one high ball that went in.

Think it was AOS who was at fault for that misplaced hand pass, jumping in when it was intended for someone else.

Great goal from us though, absolutely lethal

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,166 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

Well done and good luck in the final, G&R!

Not sure what emotion it is at the moment, truth be told, I think it's relief… because we're nowhere near strong enough to win a county. We just don't have the strength in depth / no bench.

IrishGeo is saying what we were saying at the time. No way should he have taken either free.

An awful lot of our mistakes were down to the bench just not being there. Too big of a drop off at this level. The sending off when we were in control, pure brain-dead stuff.

We should have been down to 14 ourselves in the first half of normal time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,836 ✭✭✭Westernview

Great credit to Knockmore for getting the win. A limited but very committed, well organised team getting over the line.

Same old story from Breaffy. Players making bad decisions when the game was there to be won. A number of years ago Breaffy had a late chance to equalise a county final in injury time. Aidan inexplicably decided to take a free off the ground near the sideline. It petered wide and the ref blew the final whistle soon after the kickout. Nothing learned.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,238 ✭✭✭FullBack Jam

Did the same thing happen yesterday? I wasn't at the game yesterday.

Similar in the sense of attempting to score from a free outside his scoring range instead of either working it short or getting goalkeeper to take a direct shot at goal. Poor decision making and game management has been a feature of Breaffy's loses over the years.
