That was my point, Villa have over the last few years moved up and improved year on year under Emery while we have stagnated.

The OP thinks Emery will leave because "united" and ignores the fact we've declined massively, I hope they do but we cant predict how INEOS will take us forward, how many times have we had false dawns? Players/Manager we all thought would bring us back to our best and yet here we are 12th in the table and finished 8th last year after spending millions again.

Also the issue I had with Mitch's original reply was he just went off and said

Sure why bother watching if its good to nna be rubbish forever?

Zero chance if things improving. Club doing nothing at all to try change. Oh well.

I never mentioned anything about not watching or that theres no chance of us improving I just pointed out to the OP that we aren't the "united" of old, so found his comment odd and tbh a tad antagonistic.

I didn't realize that. That's another awful deal for this Chelsea administration, how much will they have to pay?

Emery is an excellent manager at getting his team to punch above their weight when they don't have huge expectations.
But he doesn't have the same CV when it comes to being a bigger team with expectations on their shoulders each game.

Those are different skill sets like it or not.

Let's be fair, Villa can drop points any week and overall everyone will still praise Emery (rightly so) when they are there or thereabouts in European places but when you are at a club like Utd that doesn't happen.
Every time Utd lose it's a mini crisis. The media are all over it.. It is scrutinised to a level that Villa couldn't even dream of.
Stories in every paper, every tweet, TalkSport, SKY, Podcasts etc…

The only top club run he had was with Arsenal and we are in a fairly similar situation to what Arsenal were in at the time.
Big club looking to improve but with some players on the books who are obviously not good enough. It didn't work out.

You could argue that he didn't get enough time or a fair shout but Arsenal weren't looking like they were going in the right direction under him.
Like I said I just think he has a different skill set.

I'd be very unconvinced and uninspired by his appointment.

Roughly between £20m-£25m I believe. A loss for us on what we paid but a hit we needed to take imo.

All that is still 10 x more than what sancho done.

Grealish is a very good player , who would have had plenty to offer this utd team

Ok you didn't get what I meant....

First of all I never said hes a worse signing than Sancho, secondly if he has been a relative failure at City (the best team in the league) how in Gods name would he do better at United?

Also Grealish is a LW, Sancho was signed for RW so we already had Rashford for LW.

And to be extra pedantic its only just over double not x10 😉

If you forget about our own coaching/tactical issues… I think Grealish would be more the player he was at Villa. City have specifically changed him, for the worse, to fit in to how they play. His numbers are a function of that imo. He would have been given more freedom at United,

But then he's a signing that never made sense imo. I don't get where he would have fit, other than being rotation for Bruno/Rashford and was Pogba still here at the time?

Attacking Left side (AMC, LW) type area for him, and we already have starters in all those positions. Though I am strugglign wiht the time line. Did Grealish more to City the summer Ole wanted to turn Rashford into a central player (at the expense of Lukaku?) or the following summer after that had already failed.

Regarldess of that, he probably would have failed at United because 99% of players we have signed in that time frame have failed for various reasons.

Would be nice to think what the team could have been if Ole had gotten even some of his big targets - Rice, Grealish, Haaland, Bellingham being 4 big ones missed (Sancho and Maguire the two big ones we got, tbf)

You'd forget sometimes that Grealish is already 29. He's halfway through his 6 year contract at City, he'll be 32 when it runs out.

Yeh sorry I edited after to say hes a LW anyway and Sancho (also a LW) was signed for RW. Personally I think Grealish and Sancho have the same attitude type, Grealish being at a failing club he'd go the same disinterested way like Sancho.

Find it odd that Fletcher was on the bench v Brentford, and Gore on the bench vs Porto… and then today we name a travelling squad with only 3 midfielders, and neither youngster. Can have 12 on the bench and we are only bringing 9, including two sub keepers.

Half of Grealish's goals are in the Championship and Leage One, lads. He has 4 England goals v Finald, Ireland, Andorra and Iran. He's basically City's version of Antony, if he played for us he would be getting slated every week, and rightly so.

We’ll see Oasis return before either of those boyos.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

and shaws injury record. how did the brains trust think he would be a viable option for this season? 22/23 is the massive outlier with only 3 games missed.

The numbers don't lie, that's the type of consistency you don't want to see...

Grealish shouldn't be left wing. Should be in the hole like Bruno or Palmer. And in that position he is a really good player.

Watching Raphina get a hat-trick in 55 mins for Barcelona and Man United tell you “we have Antony at home” 😭

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,339 ✭✭✭Iseedeadpixels

Didn't Barca want to sell him in the summer? Should have tried for him.

Back to the question of how much clout ETH does or doesn't have re transfers:

He didn't want to sell McTominay, club overruled. He wanted to keep Amrabat, club overruled.

ETH's press conferences are turning into a parody. I got of bit of the recent one!

When asked how he felt about playing against Fred and Amrabat he replied along the lines… well, with Fred we won the Carabou Cup and with Amrabat, the FA Cup.

You almost have to admire his determination to ram home the 2 Cup wins at any and every opportunity 🤣

If he could get the team to be as creative and opportunistic, we would be flying.

Looking forward to seeing if we can show some backbone tonight in what is going to be a tricky one.

Not just here but on Twitter also the rule seems to be that if a new player is playing well then the club signed him but if a player is playing bad then Ten Hag signed him.

Also any half arsed connection like them passing each other in a corridor once upon a time.

Kinda puts paid to the guff some people were spouting in here during the summer about ETH keeping full transfer autonomy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,173 ✭✭✭Caustic

Looking forward to the game tonight, it's certainly interesting one with the ex player manger links a game we should in reality be winning hopefully we see a start similar to the Porto game without the collapse. Be nice to actually get a handy win against a decent outfit it's been a while.

Also interesting to see how the team does without Bruno, just from the a novelty perspective

Will Casemiro be Captain tonight? Evans will be a loss. Defence seems better organised when he plays at the moment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,679 ✭✭✭BenK

You couldn't be too confident for tonight considering United's recent abysmal record in Europe. Would be great to get a positive result and a decent performance but it's more in hope than anything else.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,532 ✭✭✭scottser

I can't see us scoring against a Mourinho team tbh, and they're good enough to nick a goal or two from us. 1-0 to them, I reckon.

2-1 defeat tonight my head says. 0-1 the heart says. Don't be roarin at the tv my missus says.

They have have conceeded 9 goals in 6 games in Europe this season and have looked a bit worse under Jose this year then they did last year, they were pretty much flawless in the Turkish leaguelast season.

Sure he is only in the door a few months but we should be easily scoring and winning tbh.

I wouldn't say I'm confident but certainly think we should win
