They really are two awful choices. I've no horse in this race so probably would prefer Trump to win for the lol's and proceeding meltdown from a lot of folk. Like he's an utterly dismal candidate but Harris is massively dislikeable also.

The first guy who tried to shoot Trump, we don't really know what his politics were at the time of the attempt, but he had registered as a Republican some years before, so if there's a case to say anything, it could be more strongly made that he leaned that way at the time, but there's no way of truly knowing.

The second guy just seems to have been a nutter who had initially voted for Trump, then turned against him. Donated money to the Democrats but was a registered independent. That's all a bit more worthy of debate, but whatever way you want to cut it, what you're not going to see is any prominent Democrat making jokes about the attempt, like the one Trump cracked about the attempt to harm Nancy Pelosi and her husband was attacked instead. Remember the dry quip he made about how Nancy didn't like walls but that incident probably wouldn't have happened if she'd had higher ones (Trump pauses for laughter).

I'd go beyond women 20/30s. It matters to women of all ages, and the older ones know how bad it was before Roe.

And the polling is going to specifically filter out this surge in women voters, it's designed to.

Dislikeable in what way though? Trump is a nasty bully with a penchant for childish name calling. He has no sense of humour , the only thing that makes him laugh is the names he comes up with for people he doesn't like , Newscum,Sleepy Joe, retarded Kambala, birdbrain Haley etc

And I can't fathom people who are so oblivious to consequences to such a win. Eg President Trump is gonna result in the US effectively handing portions of Ukraine to Russia. That will also have a knock on effect of putting European security at further risk. But sure, the lols and meltdown.

I do think consistency is important here: that amount of money should not be flowing into politics from single people or entities, full stop. I dont think Gates is an arch supervillain or anything (ironically, Musk is more blatantly going that direction), but it makes a farce of any pretence of democracy for anyone to have this much financial influence in an election campaign, regardless of the ‘side’ they’re supporting. Thank a conservative Supreme Court and the emergence of Super PACs for that.

Definitely not naive enough to think powerful people can’t have massively outsized influence in other democracies, including ones with proper controls on election spending (Ireland included). But the brazenness and impact of them in the US is on another scale.

There’s also reporting out there of how a Musk funded Super PAC is micro targeting individual areas with completely contradictory anti-Harris ads. Farcical stuff.

    #MEGA MAKE EUROPE GREAT AGAIN

Oh sorry didn’t at all mean/imply the issue was confined to that age category - I was more thinking (rightly or wrongly) that those age categories, if coming from a conservative background, may be more open than more older demographics given their young years to switching to Harris in this election - that was really why I selected those age categories

Exactly. We saw Trumpism influence political philosophy and commentary in the US, UK, Europe and beyond since 2016.

Little of it with definable positive outcomes. More aggression, short-termism, ignorance of demonstrable facts etc. LEss diplomacy or alignment of collaboration.

It's an American election, but the outcome will still cause ripples that spread throughout the world beyond even funding of Ukraine or the likes.

Exactly - dreadful in different ways.

Harris is playing the "first female President" card - whilst there have been some inspiring female leaders in the world, she's nowhere near them and tbh breaking the glass ceiling isn't always a good thing - sure our neighbours have had three - Thatcher, May and Truss and all bloody awful!!!

A Trump win would be the biggest event in the ongoing backlash against liberal democracy that is occurring throughout the West. NATO was created to protect the liberal democracies of Europe from eastern encroachment and to give the US an extended reach overseas. Because Trump views authoritarianism as a more attractive model to follow, he's not really interested in protecting those countries anymore and this is why he views the alliance as transactional, i.e. pay your share or it's over.

There is a vested interest among Trump acolytes in extinguishing this form of government throughout Europe and it involves inciting the breakup of the EU and removing military protection for the constituent countries. Now Trump and Co. would probably be friendlier to those countries should they elect more authoritarian governments, but even then I think this new alliance would be much less equal than before.

Funny you should highlight her gender as something to cast dispersion on her

Harris is playing the "first female President" card

of all the cards she hasn’t actually played, she’s actually not played this one the most. You can tell from the dearth of centrists crowing about “identity politics”

Women shouldn't be president because they might turn out like Tory prime ministers?

Cause I think there's another more important common thread with those examples than just their gender.

Also, Ireland has had 2 female presidents.

    She's not though.

Unless you can provide a link that proves otherqise?

Every time I've seen Harris get "the first female president" card waved her way, she pushes it aside.

Out of curiosity, who are example of female leaders who you have found inspiring in the world?

I feel like this is a conscious choice. Trump supporters know well their position is weak with women, so if they started going with more directly sexist attacks, it would only make those issues worse.

Do people trust technology.Trump voters famously don't(Space lasers from the Jews)

Okay but then we're still talking about polls being biased against Trump rather than the other way. All the reasons people are putting forward in this thread for a 'shy Harris' phenomenon in the polls this time that significantly outweights any shy Trump one seem very speculative to me…

To me, a better questions is: Why is Kamala Harris liked? She seems to have little to no scruples and to be willing to do anything to grab more power. She was one of the most unpopular candidates during the primaries, but Biden boxed himself in when he said he’d pick a woman of color as his running mate. (And Trump gets accused of pandering to his base? How was Biden not pandering?) But I’ll give some specific examples of things she’s done that I believe show her true colors.

First, she blocked exculpatory evidence from being introduced in an appeals trial that would have exonerated a man who had been sitting for several years on death row for a crime he didn’t commit. What kind of person does that? Even more troubling, what kind of people like and defend someone who does that? And the evidence was indeed exculpatory because after Harris stepped down as attorney general, her successor allowed the evidence to be submitted, and the man was released.

Second, she implemented a policy whereby parents of truant children were arrested. To top it off, she’s seen on video laughing about it. You can read about it and see the video here: Kamala Harris laughed about jailing parents over truancy. But it's not funny | Nathan Robinson. Note that this article was not written by someone on the right before the usual mob have a stroke on here.

Finally, in an interview with Stephen Colbert (Flashback: Kamala Harris Tells Stephen Colbert 'It Was a Debate!' When Asked About Swipes Against Biden), Harris was asked by Colbert how she went from harsh critic to his running mate. In Colbert’s words, “how do you go from being such a passionate opponent on such bedrock principles for you, and now you guys seem to be pals?” Harris’ response should give anyone pause (taken from the linked article): “It was a debate,” Harris said, deploying the laugh she often uses to deflect during television interviews. However, presidential debates are forums that should allow people who will be affected by the candidates’ policies to know their true beliefs. It’s not just a way for egomaniacs to score points and make themselves look smart and witty. But for Harris, everything is in fact a way to acquire more power. How can anyone believe anything she says when she treats everything as a joke?

Need i talk about her performance on the border or precisely lack of performance?

This doesn’t exhaust everything to dislike about Harris, but for me, these items stand out as showing the kind of character Harris has. She’s a cruel, duplicitous person entirely lacking in any moral principles or scruples. Her boss seemed like your run-of-the-mill influence peddler, but basically a decent guy despite the difficult hand played to him after the Trump years.

One of the most competent government leaders of most of our lifetimes was female, Angela Merkel.

They can't use the excuse that was thrown at Hillary in 2016 suggesting that women were too emotional to be leaders.

In fairness to Trump, he did help women in a lot of places in proving that being too emotional to lead effectively was not something that only women suffered from.

We're used to it. Considering what I read a few posts back about how many times schools are closed for an election day in one year, I'd rather just do the one big one, personally.

Going down my sample ballot. *means unopposed. (Only one name on the ballot. They can't lose, but the tally is an indicator of vulnerability for the next election).

    1. Federal President.
    2. Federal Senator
    3. Federal House Rep
    4. State Railroad Commissioner (Despite the name, is an oil/gas regulatory official, name is a holdover)
    5. Justice, Texas Supreme Court Place 2 (If there's one thing I dislike about Texas, it's that the judges are aligned by party)
    6. Justice, Texas Supreme Court Place 4
    7. Justice, Texas Supreme Court Place 6
    8. Presiding Judge, Texas Court of Criminal Appeals (Think Supreme Court, but for criminal matters, the Supreme court does civil)
    9. Judge, Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, Place 7
    10. Judge, Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, Place 8
    11. District Member, State Board of Education*
    12. State Senator
    13. State House Rep
    14. Justice, 4th Court of Appeals District, Place 2*
    15. Justice, 4th Court of Appeals District, Place 3
    16. Justice, 4th Court of Appeals District, Place 4
    17. Justice, 4th Court of Appeals District, Place 5
    18. Justice, 4th Court of Appeals District, Place 7*
    19. District Judge*
    20. Probate Court*
    21. Sheriff*
    22. County Tax Assessor-Collector*
    23. County Commissioner
    24. Justice of the Peace*
    25. County Constable*
    26. City Proposition A: Ethics Review Board (Redefine "Conflict of interest", increase funding, allow discretion of acceptance of cases)
    27. City Proposition B: Language Modernization (Shall the city modify about 40 parts of the charter to reflect superceded legislation or modernize archaic language)
    28. City Proposition C: Modify the city charter to allow the city council to set all terms of employment of city manager including pay and duration.
    29. City Proposition D: Allow city employees to partake in political activity, with a few constraints/limitations.
    30. City Proposition D: Give the Mayor and city councilmen a raise. (Mayor of San Antonio, Pop 1.4mn, would get $88k a year). Future adjustments to be aligned to correlate with median income for a family of four in the city. (I really like that idea. If the city does well, the mayor does well)
    31. City Proposition E: Extent term duration for city council members and mayor from 2 years to 4. Reduce term limites from 4 to 2 to compensate

The legislature was not in session this year, so no state referenda.

Speaking of woman great to see Tulsi Gabbard finally join the Republican party. I would link the great speech she gave but that seems to get posters banned these days. I think when undecided voters see the likes of Tulsi switch parties it might help them decide to vote for Trump if they were on the fence about it.

Stupid question probably but can you choose what categories to vote in and ignore others ie vote for president but not Sheriff for example.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,028 ✭✭✭✭everlast75

    Got it.

Democrat woman - unqualified, incompetent, weak

MAGA woman - experienced, strong, influential

Elect a clown... Expect a circus

Now there a woman with the morals to be President. Definitely see her making a run for the Republicans as soon as 28.

Yes yes rafts of Dems and ex Dems supporting Trump and zero Repubs and ex Repubs supporting Harris…..

Yes. I plan on doing just that for some elections either where I don't like any option, or I just didn't do the research to see which of the options I preferred. (Or more likely, I forgot what I had researched. I really need to make myself a little voting guide to bring into the voting center, I'm not allowed pull out my mobile 'phone)

Ah yes, an upstanding politician that parrots Russian propaganda.. It says a lot when posters seem to think that somebody like this is a good politician.
