Never made it that far either thankfully. It's an important part of the workday alright, needs more users though.

When someone mentioned earlier in the thread, "What would we do if Beasty suddenly stepped down, who'd step in?"

I was very tempted to post, "I'll do it!" But I dont think the joke would have been appreciated lol

If I remember correctly, the Thunderdome was closed not long after boards.ie became a bit more commercial, I think it's when Daft.ie got involved?

They weren't fans of Googling boards.ie and having Thunderdome threads appear. So it got the axe.

I was amazed it went on for so long tbh, think it was still going until about 2013. Some really nasty shite posted in there over the years, all under the guise of 'fair game' if you entered the place.

It's gas, everyone was giving out about a commercial takeover back then, how the site would be 'ruined' - I'd happily take that now!

It takes them literally years to appoint a new mod, they have been making that excuse year after year after year and still don't address it. There is clearly a gatekeeping issue that they won't acknowledge.

The OG dome was effin hilarious. People willingly entered "the game" and essentially anything they had posted on Boards was fair game. But thats as far as it went. The version that was eventually torpedoed was a pale shadow of what the dome actually was. In relation to prison, the majority of things i remember were multi account WUMs being questioned and caught up in their lies along with a decent amount of piss taking. The fact is if people couldnt respect the rules then why should they be shown respect.

The Thunderdome was hilarious until it became personal.

Mods have always been picked from the forums most prolific but also sensible, cool headed posters. Unfortunately there is a huge shortage of sensible posters at the moment.

Admins aren't afraid of getting it wrong. A mod can always be demodded if it turns out they're not up to the job. But all mods have access to tools that posters don't. They have access to information and background knowledge that posters don't. The prolific posters in CA are so heavily entrenched in right v left that it makes it impossible to see who would not abuse this position.

Also the sensible, level headed posters see the abuse routinely thrown at moderators and understandably decline the position.

For an experiment, if anyone would like to PM me a list of potential mod candidates I will look at it. Maybe there's a gem in the middle of all the chaos who has been missed.

I guess it's not easy to find out if someone is capable of being a mod.

I can't remember who but a decent poster turned into a little Hitler when appointed in After Hours and I don't think the place has recovered.

Maybe they should try get in Mods from other forums to share the workload, but I wouldn't blame them for not warning to look after Current Affairs.

Usually, yes. I did volunteer for a few fora but I was invited on another occasion.

It's definitely on a downward spiral. I think if Beasty ever calls it a day, it'll be like the migration to Vanilla all over again.

I went to a forum beers about 8-10 years ago. Stayed with someone on the forum and I flew in via Ryanair. I remember it well. It was in JW Sweetmans in Dublin. I recall chilling with pints waiting for everyone to turn up. Good time. I was going to go to a mod beers in 2020 but it got cancelled. Can't imagine openly giving my location away on the site now for safety reasons. It's sad but it's also reality.

I stepped away from Politics because after the move to Vanilla, mods had even fewer tools than there are now. It's mad that it was a straight up downgrade from vbulletin but we have what we have. I just wasn't able to do the job without the tools. I still think Boards could have a place on the "new internet" but it'd need the owner to remember what he is responsible for it.

Some people find abusing prisoners in Guantanamo bay "hilarious" also.
There was no value in it other than posters getting a free chance to bully other posters. hurray, arent we great..

May I ask, what's the carrot? Why would people want to help out? If the only reason is to keep the site alive when we have an uninterested owner, there will be trouble appointing more mods, especially younger ones.

I've told you why I became a mod:

Boards had a clear mission statement, "Now ye're talking", and it was a welcoming, warm and most importantly (to me) an inclusive site. It really was a nice place to hang out, have silly craic and It felt safe. A big part of that was who wasn't let in.

It cannot be argued that it is still the same warm, inclusive welcoming site that it once was. There's no way the amount of "anti's this, that and the other" would have been tolerated then. My trans friends do not approve of me still being involved in boards as it is seen by my friends as a hostile ground. But that's just a personal anecdote.

It had outside missions like Santa Strike Force, mods beers, a drama group, a cycling club, photography club etc. (Are any of these still going under the boards banner?)

Honestly, try as I may I fail to see why anyone would want to mod a site with no clear mission and muddled engagement from the top down.

I still think boards could be great, and could be a force for good again, but I also could be quite delusional about that!

Right now, I'm just enjoying it while I and the site are both here.

    Woah. What?

What types of information and background knowledge?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,474 ✭✭✭✭GreeBo

How about rather than continually making excuses about how hard is it, we make some candidates mods and then we pick a select few people to, oh I dont know, maybe "administer" the situation? If it doesn't work then de-mod them.

Pretty much every entity in the world has an org structure, right now boards is relying on admins doing the grunt work of moderating. This is not what they should be doing, the clue is in the name.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,175 ✭✭✭Yvonne007

I have to agree that this does sound troubling.

    Warned: Cop on!

Of course Moderators have access to tools and information the average poster doesn't. This really should be a 2 point warning for constant trolling. But for some reason I'm trying to avoid triggering a temp siteban.

    Access to reported posts.

Access to private forums where they can discuss issues with their co-moderators.

Access to admins who can confirm if someone is a rereg.

The ability to warn, ban, forum ban or site ban any user they like.

Just out of interest @Boggles, what do you think a moderator should or should not have access to in the course of their duties?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86,725 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

just to confirm as a former mod it’s these tools and features yes, not something more nefarious that others seem to worry about(?).

That's fair enough, but the context of your post was established posters none of which are fit to moderate apparently.

I'd also wonder about the effectiveness of the "tools" to determine reregs considering the site has absolutely been infected with them the past while and mods on here have commented that the lack of action against reregs, the rule change in CA has helped and is welcomed.

    So deserved praise for that.

Just out of interest @Boggles, what do you think a moderator should or should not have access to in the course of their duties?

I don't really have an opinion on what tools a mod should have or could have.

My question related to information which suggested was been stored and collated about long established users.

    Which has been answered.

    Thank you.

I think they were concerned that mods have access to personal information like the email address - which no one should, not even the admins.

From my perspective, one was asking a question, while the other was laden with implication and designed to “stir things up”.

Just my take, it holds no weight here.

So… can we get some more moderators?

At the moment as GreeBo said, the top of the hierarchy are doing all the grunt work.

It reminds me of one of those first time people managers who doesn't understand how delegation works.

If people would stop for a minute with the faux outrage and just think.

Of course Moderators have access to information and tools. If not you could all moderate away to your heart's content. Because there'd be no difference between posters and Moderators.

It's this type of OTT response to any communication from moderators that make people not want to bother. Pure time wasting having to spell out simple things to people just looking to stir.

I made a suggestion in the last feedback thread, that ALL mods in the Social and Fun Category should have limited rights to moderate in CA - for example if they see blatant trolling or baiting, or incivility, they can step in and give an on thread warning to cease and desist.

Then, they could flag the warning they've made to the official CA mods for attention, via the report function, with their feedback, (or through the mod forum). It would also give more serious breaches some level of priority. The official CA mods could then make the decision if any further action is needed, e.g. if a points warning or ban should apply.

It would share the load a bit, and something did happen and Beasty had to step away, (god forbid, I wouldn't wish harm on anyone) - then at least there is some minimum backup while a solution is found.

Both for him, and for the CA posters who don't want to engage in an unmoderated forum.

But, it is just a suggestion.

    @Flaneur OBrien @ancapailldorcha

    @Big Bag of Chips

Well fair enough about the process . Did think it was more than people just putting up their hand and volunteering!

Good to see Necro back on CA as well. At least they have some idea what they are getting into .

Would want to be a fair ould crackdown on some of the abuse dished out before newer people would put themselves forward .

Many of us think we are " sensible " until we get into a ruck !

I know I have been dragged out kicking and screaming on a few occasions and had to cool down even though all I wanted was to run straight back in ..at the time anyway !

    Yes cool heads needed 😁
