Interesting to see Patterson flown out to replace Murray, is this a precaution that Casey doesn't make it or Casey just not available I wonder

Loughman & Daly would be a huge loss v Sharks, hopefully they both make it & scans are precautionary

Here's the news being referred to above.

Conor Murray has returned home for family reasons. Scrum-half Paddy Patterson has joined the squad in South Africa having returned to full training and Academy prop George Hadden will also join the squad this week.

On the injury front, Craig Casey will return to training this week having been unavailable on Saturday due to a knock.

Alex Nankivell (hip) was a late withdrawal ahead of the game on Saturday and is being assessed by the medical department.

Diarmuid Barron is continuing the return to play protocols and his availability will be determined later in the week.

Jeremy Loughman (knee) and Shane Daly (leg) will go for scans today after being removed against DHL Stormers on Saturday.

Back at the HPC, Brian Gleeson (shoulder) and Diarmuid Kilgallen (leg) have both been cleared to return to full training.

    And yes it's a precaution.

This turned into a tome, so broke out the bold function…

    Crowley:

Crowley's poor form is being over-stated. He was excellent against Ospreys and good against Leinster (very good in the first half, I thought). Certainly better than his opposite number Frawley, who's his main competition, and who had a good game too to be fair to him. I guess the higher levels of scrutiny are to be expected when you're Ireland's starting 10 and under the spotlight more.

I will say tho, I think his place kicking isn't where it was last season. To be fair, the Ospreys game was played in an orange weather warning, but he has missed a few outside of that that I'd ordinarily expect him to convert.

    Coaching Ticket:

With regards the coaching ticket, I'd back them to turn this around - particularly when we start getting players back from injury - as they have done before. 1st season, we lost 5 of our first 7 games and went on to win the URC. 2nd season, we were in the bottom half of the URC, and went on to win 11 games in a row, getting 44 out of 45 available points, to finish top of the table.

It's obviously not optimal, and you'd rather not have a poor start, but I'd rather this form early in the season, with a view to peaking towards the pointy end.

    Lineout:

I will say tho, the lineout absolutely has to improve, it's just not good enough. TRK had some stats, we're pretty awful on both sides of the ball. Even on some lineout ball we're winning, it's not tidy ball that you can set a good platform off of. Improving things there will go a long way towards improving everything else (and results, I'd wager) as generally our maul and set plays off the lineout look really good.

POM returning and just firing him up at 2; that alone would go some way to solving it short-term (a la Ireland vs SA). But there has to be some stark improvement and fast.

Very disappointed with the result, with our lineouts and with the two restarts that didn't 10. The no look passes are great when they work out but look stupid when they go wrong like they did last Saturday.

The fixture list and the injury list have been unkind to us but we should have won against Zebre and that would have eased the current situation re Table Points. A LBP v Leinster and Stormers and we wouldn't look as bad as we currently do. There were a number of scores and decisions in both those games that could lead you to think "what if" but now we have to up our performances and hope for some luck for the rest of the season.

I've liked what I've seen of him so happy to see him get the extension

The Indo are reporting we’re looking into getting a medical joker at LHP. Loughman is going for a scan on his knee (he’s been in the wars the past few games).

I think with Loughman, Killer, Whycherly and Donnelly all out, that’s our 4 best LHPs all unavailable. Likely John Ryan will be covering for the foreseeable future anyway.

When is Killer due back? I thought there was mention of November?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,415 ✭✭✭letowski

Not sure tbh, he was still on the rehab list in the last squad update too.

Even if Killer is back in November, himself and Ryan aren't enough cover if Loughman also ends up being out long term.

Rowntree really needs to get it together or be moved on. Munster going backwards

I don't see where Munster would find a better coaching ticket at the moment. It's the injuries we need to clear up, not a new set of coaches.

apart from the forwards coach, surely there is someone better out there?

I watched the Stormers match and seriously, Munster were poor. Crowley in particular was error ridden. The forwards were poor and were for the most part hammered in the scrum.

The damning thing is, Stormers were poor too! 2 intercept tries! Rowntree must be livid. That's two matches in a row that Munster were not at the races. Then there's the collapse v Zebre.

There wasn't any Munster player last week that I thought played well. I thought Coombes was the pick of the team. He came off the bench. It's not like there were wasn't quality on the Munster team. The break should help the coaches rehab the squad. This opening block has been poor.

Rory Scannell back from long term injury.

    The bench is fairly callow.

Very weak bench, but given injuries little choice. Good for some of the front row youngsters to get some exposure.....baptism of fire

Big Gav not in the 23 and not listed as injured….

He wasn't listed last week either but ended up on the bench

Listened to the indo podcast earlier, Ro'c said Beirne was carrying a hamstring niggle...can't be much if he's starting.

We need to play cup final rugby 2mor, take the 3 points when on offer, Interesting to see Kolisi at 8.

Gotta get at least a point from this

Handicap was 6 earlier in the week, went 7 once loughman was ruled out & now it's 8pts

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 13,216 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cookiemunster

I'd bite your hand off for an 8 point defeat! I don't see Munster getting anything tomorrow when you compare the two squads.

    That is too soft

I have to say I'm incredibly unconvinced by Rowntree. That URC win (and it was good) covers up a lot of failures and the fact that outside Beirne all the Munster players who are in the Irish squad look better in green than red.

And one year of bad injuries is bad luck but 3 in a row…

    Sharks just out powering Munster.

    Early doors yet

Nothing won in November, there are concerns.

Will hold counsel til at least we have a proper squad to choose from

I'd like to see another team outside of Leinster deal with the same injury level we've had.
