Do Munster have a lot of injuries?

    They look terrible.

Terrific from Coughlan, Quinn, Burns & Nash. Super try.

    A TBP would be great.

Coughlan has made a fairly big impact since coming on.

BP try in the end. Questionably deserved really but they'll take it.

think we’d all have taken an LBP today, we just won’t dwell on the overall performance

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,555 ✭✭✭Ben Bailey

Bench, correctly described above as 'callow' was great. TBP a fair return.

I'd have taken a point before kick off as I knew we wouldn't be able to live with them.

However the performance was shambolic. Summed up perfectly by their last try.

Glad to get a point & stuck at it to get it...that's a positive

If we'd thrown in the towel completely Id be far more concerned.

Brutal performance puts a bit of a downer on what should be a great occasion nxt weekend.

Thats the worst of the away games outside of interpros done with.

It'll be interesting to see how it goes,we predominantly prefer to be on the road when up against it

I suppose all we can hope for is a transformative performance against the ABs which is the turning point of their season. Like the game against SA two years ago.

The seasons over, time to blood the young lads and hopefully re-build for next year

I think it's time to stop blaming the coaches, we've had 4 coaches over the last 7 years and none of them were able to improve the team to any great degree, yet Erasmus coached SA to 2 world cups and VanGraan brought bath to the premiership final in just his second year in charge

Maybe it's the players or the backroom staff but I doubt it's the coach

Munster has a worse start the season they won the URC.

They won 11 URC games in a row last season to finish top.

So no, the season isn’t over.

We need to improve, no doubt. But there’s been a lot of “the sky is falling down” type stuff on here the last week or 2.

Just to fact check you there... Last season we lost round 8 to Leinster and round 9 to Connacht we then won 9 games in a row after that to top the table but we had already won 4 games before we lost to Leinster

To repeat the same situation this year we need to beat 2 of Lions home, Ulster away and Leinster home in our next 3 games. In the second half of this season we have to face Glasgow away, Bulls, Ulster and Connacht and we need to win each and every last one of them

You are correct to say the season is far from over but it's definitely an uphill climb

Happy enough with that try BP, held up over the line twice two, lineout improved but still gifting soft scores to the opposition.

I can't fathom why people are questioning Rowntree's coaching we've won the league in his first year, topped the table last year, hardly the sign of a poor coach. Admittedly we've had a very bad start this year but aside from the loss to Zebre the other games weren't gimmes and I don't want to go back and mention the what ifs from Croke Park but we played great rugby that night and deserved more from it.

Then we travelled to SA with a makefit squad who picked up a bug while there which affected their training & prep for the two games.

This break from the autumn friendlies comes at a great time for us.

This is either a wind up or a pure stupid reaction.

Top 8 gets us into knock out rugby and gets us into the Champions Cup next season, there's a lot of rugby to be played before anyone sane would class the season as being over

You’re right- but techically 10 games; 9 regular season games to finish top, and then v Ospreys.

It doesn’t change my overall substantive point; I think we’ve shown we can turn this around, particularly when we get players back from injury.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,832 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

The incorrect claim you made was

They won 11 URC games in a row last season to finish top.

They were top before the Ospreys game and never won 11 games in a row

We can turn around, for sure, but our run of games in the second half of this season is much more difficult than it was last season. Also worthy to remember the table was much tighter at the top for most of last season. We won 13 games in total to finish top, Edinburgh won 11 games and finished 10th... This season the leaders have a much bigger lead

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,254 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

Ya, I’ve said you’re right; they won 10 URC games in a row, 9 of which put them top.

But it still doesn’t change my substantive point, which I think we agree on

And the URC, more than any league, has shown you don’t need to finish top to win it. You need to put yourself in a position to win and then hit some good form, and hopefully have some luck with injuries.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,257 ✭✭✭50HX

You don't need to finish top but you if you want to generate revenue you need the knock out games at home in both competitions

Look at revenue Leinster generate from it, Aviva for inter pros & CC

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,832 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

You also need to play like professionals, not schoolboys

This is something we need to address in the immediate future, I can't see us finishing in the top 8 unless we finish the season with at least 10 wins and pull a few TBPs as well. Remember the South Africans still need to play with themselves

Munster in the challenge cup would be a good place for us to rebuild but also a financial disaster

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 301 ✭✭redved

I think it's clear that the start to this season is not comparable to two years ago. By any measure the squad is weaker and key players are now two years older

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 31,560 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

I actually don't think Munster have lost any game that there wasn't a reasonable expectation for them to lose apart from that awful Zebre game - but these things happen. The problem is that the performances in all the losses (and frankly the win against Connacht) were pretty terrible. That's not an easy fix.

Agree with @phog that Munster haven't had a bad season thus far, would be nice to win all the games and get BPs every time, but that's not what this Munster team can do. There was some poor defending yesterday, which is a pattern in a few games but like last year I'd expect munster to improve as the season develops. It was fantastic to see the spirit in the team as last year's season wore on.
