Yep, I had the same, albeit not until the area was fully live. The fibre was brought from the DP by one crew, and the installation done by another two weeks later.

just an update on this, went to ready to connect so called Vodafone for an update on order. Was given the same story that a survey needed to be done so asked them to explain this as cable has already been run from the pole to outside of house and is hanging from the fascia ready to bring inside. Didn’t get anywhere with Vodafone support and he couldn’t give me an install date. He did offer me a free mobile dongle for 30 days so it seems this is a regular thing for Vodafone and they are offering the dongle as an incentive to leave the order with them.
Would anyone have experience of cancelling an NBI order with a provider and switching to another. Could you essentially end up waiting weeks anyway?

NBI cable ran to EIR Pole out at the road - Good 40m run to get to house . Who is responsible for final cable run to house ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,376 ✭✭✭✭shmeee

A surveyor will come out and then decide on best route, could be a mix of a few contractors who install the poles and then KN Cricet or the likes will run the fibre line. The final cable run won't happen until you order the NBI fibre broadband.

Had a Vodafone rep at the house last night looking for pre-orders. Twas a surprise as the NBI wasn't due to be live until July/September 2025. The boxes went up on the poles a few months back. Now to trawl through all the providers - what fun! We're using 3 Mobile broadband at the moment (no other choice available when we moved here) and had Virgin when we lived in Dublin. As we work from home we need decent reliable broadband so any recommendations would be very welcome. I live just outside Dungloe.

But they (KN/NBI etc) will need to make it happen ? Just wondering as a NBI foreman was outside the other day and I was chatting to him and he said I should run a new duct myself as if I don't the installer will just say existing duct (not used for 15 years and covered in at house end) is blocked and walk away..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,376 ✭✭✭✭shmeee

Yes, and why won't they make it happen? If you order fibre from a supplier, they have to give you that product.

I had a duct, but couldn't locate it at road. So they just said to go with poles once I had landowners permission. And that was it. They were never going to "walk away", something was gonna work.

I wasn't going digging to source the duct and wreck the driveway so poles were perfect solution. And 100 times easier. Many here have mentioned they've installed their own ducting as they want it done in a fixed direction. I know people who had contractor's do the ducting also, no issue either but wouldn't want a nice driveway etc.

NBI foreman could also be just waffling.

    Have you ordered anything yet?

All fibre to the home will be reliable, why won't it? Some here have mentioned Sky has some issues... But I've not heard of any directly from friends or famiy.

I'm rural and went with Eir FTTH. Neighbours have both Sky and Vodafone FTTH, and both have no issues in last 10 months or so. I was like yourself and ran off three mobile for a long time, the difference is full circle. We've 2 WFH FT and never an issue with connecting to cloud networks or remote desktops.

Personal preference and price really it comes down to I think then.

NBI people around locally today, marked the location for new NBI poles, where no eircom poles exist.

Saw road markings like this on other roads in recent days but didn't know what they were for but a family member caught them in the act today 😀

The poles were finally erected to my house a few days ago and my future provider said an engineer will do my install next week. Only problem is the nearest wires are on a pole 300 yds away. Does the engineer bring the fibre to the house and then do the install or am I looking at another long wait while the left hand figures out what the right hand is doing..........?

Generally the installer will run fibre direct to the house on the day, from the nearest fibre DP, up to 500m iirc

Seems lots of "It's here, pre order available " emails have been sent out, I got mine this morning which was a surprise as my expected date was Jan 2025 to June 2025, my house is about 100 metres from the "main" line, how long can I expect to wait if I ordered today ?

So ours went from dec July 26. Down to Sept Nov 2024. And the lads were out cabling the road and down the national route.

Checked it last week. It was Nov 24 adjusted from Oct earlier this month.

Checked just now and it's now may - June 2025.

Top work there lads, top work 👏

That happened here for some houses but returned to an earlier time after a few days. Have the black boxes gone up on the poles around your area?

What should I be looking for on the poles?

I have seen some clear plastic pipes on some poles?

They have installed a bunch of new poles but the wires are still on the old poles. I am assume we won't be going live before that work is done.

Pole replacement is early in the rollout. The clear ducting is for underground fibre runs, they blow fibre through them.

After that they do the hedge cutting, run the fibre cable and then install the fibre DP boxes

I think we got it within 6 weeks of the boxes going up.

A beautiful autumnal morning, when couple of lads from Circet arrived to hang the wires. They said that they are bringing the wires from the nearest DP up to my house and the installer will bring it inside and set it up in one visit.

After over 3 years of nothing it's all happening in one week.

Madness, but at this stage, I'm saying nothing.

So I signed up with Sky and during the online sign up I could choose an appointment, which I did.. next Tuesday, which I found quite remarkable, as there is no connection to the house.

How likely is the following scenario ?

Sky man knocks on door " Hello Sir, I am here to connect your broadband, can you let me know where the fibre comes in ?" Me (pointing to a pole 400m down the lane)- " Ah it is just there down the road". Sky man fecks off in his van never to be seen again.

So I am in a new build and have the review underway status to see if we're eligible. My eircode was created 12 or so months ago. The neighbour next door has Pre-Order status. A pole went up recently adjacent to the neighbours.

What are the chances my new build will be shafted? We're last of 3 houses on a boreen.

You order through NBI? So first slot more than likely be someone coming out for a "look" and then pass the next task on. At least you'll get ball rolling. My fibre box was maybe 400/500m up the lane also, so first appointment was a look around, 2nd appt then was install of the pole I needed in the field next door, 3rd appt was install - fibre pulled from road down to house and installed.

You'll need a pole or 2 installed anyway by sound of it. Any duct used for old connections?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 707 ✭✭✭Happy_Harry

Ordered through NBI ? - I guess so. NBI told me I was pre-order ready, then send me to a page to choose provider.

Any duct.. Yes and this is the weird bit. There is an Eircom box between me and my left hand neighbours where we got our landline from. This box has a duct to a box at the right hand neighbours' (100m) where I believe they terminated the fibre. And I never understood why as they did use the duct from the last pole (400m) to this neighbours' box but not to ours ..

    That's a bit odd!

Sure see what happens, and if they come at all on that date they've given you. Which I wouldn't hold my breath on either.

Seems one pole would be best option and job done. Would you mind a pole and overhead wire?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 707 ✭✭✭Happy_Harry

not really , have 2 ESB poles around the house anyway, but will suggest/encourage them to use the existing duct. Will post back next week

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 928 ✭✭✭ShaunC

And just like that, the circet guy arrived on time yesterday and chatted with me for a few minutes about how I wanted the work done. He done a great job and cleaned up after himself. I had broadband before he left.

Hopefully many more people get sorted just like I did.

Very good. I have my installation date next Thursday. Keeping my expectations low and telling myself I should definitely have it before Christmas. Not sure my duct situation is a runner but at least hope the distance between the pole at the road and the house is short enough that they can go overhead easily if the duct doesn't work.

I'm like a child at Christmas though - going from a 4G router with only moderate reception to the mast to fibre will be amazing.

I've had my NBI connection for five months now without a hitch, but today I got the dreaded red alarm light on the ONT. I presume a fibre has been damaged by the wind somewhere (although most of my route is underground, so maybe it was a digger). Anyway, I've reported it to Digiweb, so all I can do now is wait.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 110 ✭✭Mobius2021

I have a 4G router mounted in the attic with a Three SIM (€15 PAYG) for the last few years until the fibre comes. Thinking of topping up that SIM once every 6 months to keep it active for cases like this. Or maybe just get one of their €20 SIMs whenever it is needed.

Funny enough, I have exactly the same. I used it as backup to Imagine before fibre. I left it in place just in case, so today I topped it up with €20 and away she went. 😎

It's a really nice option when working from home, that's for sure.

P.S. I'm sitting beside the ONT here in the office, and literally as I was typing this post, the alarm light went out and we're back in business. Yay!
