Does Hezbollah terrorise Israel, or are they fighting against a country that has seized and occupied Lebanese territory since the 80s? Iran funds their proxies in Yemen, against Saudi funded proxies. Iran supported Shia militia in Iraq, against Sunni militias and the US. I wouldn't characterise that in the same manner as ISIS or Al Queda type islamic terrorism. Their support of Russia is awful, and likely tied more to their opposition to the US than being against Ukraine.

But you cannot deny that there is significant overlap: opposition to Israel and support for Putin's "liberation" of Ukraine is a position that is commonly held to be intertwined. In this regard, Daniel Ortega is joined by the likes of Julius Malema of the Economic Freedom Fighters of South Africa.

    Economic Freedom Fighters - Wikipedia

The EFF is against Zionism,[66] is strongly critical of Israel and its conflict with the Palestinians;[67] referring to the country as "evil" and advocating for its destruction.[68][69] During the 2023 Israel–Hamas war the leader of the EFF Julius Malema stated the party's support for Hamas and that should the party win the 2024 election they would send arms to assist the organisation.[70][71]

The EFF officially supports Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, commending what they refer to as Russia's "anti-imperialist programme" against NATO.[57] During the Lady R incident the party stated their support for any prospect of South African exports of military equipment to Russia that might assist in its liberation of Ukraine.[72]

I would argue that this position is consistent, and that so is diametric opposition to it.

Israel is a country with Jews Arabs and also other minorities

People are criticizing the actions of the extreme right wing government in power at the moment

Theres plenty of Israeli citizens who are not in favour of the war in Lebanon or the killing of civilians

I think it's best to discuss the war in the middle east the war in Ukraine deserves a separate thread

Those guys are as bad as the Nazis. No difference at all. If it were not for the fact that there is still world coverage on tv of most of the bombing and still members of the press on the ground despite being targeted, then people like the two names would be ensuring that even more innocents were murdered. It is a genocide already anyway imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54,251 ✭✭✭✭tayto lover

All that would be great indeed. It would just require people to be tolerant of each other and not committing genocide.

The IDF were told over a week ago that Hamas was defeated.

    The Israeli's are consummate liars.

But we knew that all along.

You really are living in a completely different world than the rest of us.

Irish supreme colonists?? I dont know where you get your information from but you need to maybe find another source.

You aslo need to read up on Irish history.

Ordinary "Irish" people didnt colonise anywhere - they were the "peasant" class and treated like dirt by the British and Upper Class / Ruling class of Ireland.

Ireland had been colonised by the British for over 700 years and in the time of colonisation history has shown that (mainly protestant) landowners / upper class / ruling class and those who were loyal to the British Monarchs did get involved with the slave trade in the Caribbean / African colonies / Indian colonies under the flag of the British Empire

In the Caribbean - the "peasant" Irish who went (or were forced) to the area under the promise of wealth etc were treated as bad as the African slaves.

As a matter of fact the plantation owners sometimes feared a revolt if the Black Slaves and Irish worked together.

The ordinary Irish peasants for want of a better word who were treated like sh1t (sounds familiar) by the British didnt colonise anywhere - they did however emigrate to escape the rule of the British empire.

Colonialism is exploiting another country for your own countries gain - The irish never took over lands to benefit Ireland - They emigrated for a better life.

Emigration and Colonisation are two completely different things.

    Supreme colonialists my arse.

Surprise surprise - Ben-Gvir and Smotrich holding an event about the existential threat that Israel faces to grab yet more land.

    Haaretz:

    • ISRAEL: PM Netanyahu's Likud party circulated an invitation to an event near the Gaza border titled "Preparing to Settle Gaza." The event, scheduled for next week, will feature the construction of a sukkah as part of a "city of sukkahs" initiative by the Nachala movement, which is known for establishing illegal outposts in the West Bank. Several Likud members as well as government ministers, such as far-right ministers Ben-Gvir and Smotrich, are expected to attend.
    • HOSTAGES/CEASE-FIRE: The Hostages' Families Forum announced that a rally for the return of the hostages will take place on Saturday evening. In recent weeks, no rallies were held due to the IDF's Home Front Command guidelines.
    • Delta Airlines announced that it will continue halting flights to and from Israel until at least March

Israel seems to have gone into complete berserker mode. This current path they are on cannot result in anything but them being a total pariah.

It is utterly astonishing that a nation that calls itself the most democratic nation in the ME with the most moral army in the world, can say that without any trace of irony - they utterly believe it.

But the rest of the world sees the truth. And that will be their downfall. Economy in the gutter, mass exodus of decent Israelis, Govt officials prosecuted for war crimes and possibly the ICJ finding they have committed genocide.

the citizens of Israel protested about the hostages not being found,

Seems to be no citizens in Israel out protesting the slaughter in Gaza and now Lebanon

The first paragraph sum up my view, the last paragraph sum up others views.

This is at the heart of the complexity of this issue. It's 2 competing world views and places like Israel, Ukraine, Taiwan are just the battlefields in that world view .

Given this train of thought then any American not of Native American descent should be forced to leave their home and return the land. It's a far more recent event than the Jews losing their homeland 2 millenia ago.

You can't go back rewriting ancient history and running roughshod over the people who lived there for centuries. If they wanted to provide the Jewish a homeland they should have annexed part of Germany or Austria and given that to them, simultaneously punishing the people who facilities the holocaust. The ultimate FU to Hitler and the Nazis. Instead they opened a can of worms by displacing people they've always viewed as less human.

You're clearly spending two much time on American social media, the world in general, and this conflict specifically, isn't binary like you are trying to present it as.

And before you and any of the other lot chime in with what they think is a gotcha, I think the second comment is an example of actual anti-Semitism but also the first is devoid of any sense of reality and just seems to regurgitate Israeli government talking points.

That would have to be very unlucky, that across the open field of North Gaza that a small collection of houses would be hit

I don't think Mr. Kabub is trying to either hide his background or serving as a Supreme Court justice in a desperate bid to save his life, so the comparison seems … questionable at best …

Yes, I did. Although there were different motivations for some people who were fully or partly Jewish to serve in the armed forces of the Third Reich, a lot of it was Jewish people looking for a way to survive or in a desperate bid to protect their families.

I doubt very strongly that Israeli Supreme Court justices are facing any of the issues of Jews in Nazi Germany. Cop on.

    Quotes from the article:

Some commanding officers told their Jewish soldiers to remain quiet and go on as they were. The officers wanted their best and most experienced men for the imminent invasions of Western and Northern Europe. World conquest trumped racial purity.

Other Jewish men falsified their papers. But forged documents still left the problem of the telltale circumcision. Living in constant terror of exposure, many were ready with a story of a childhood infection that resulted in the removal of a foreskin. Others, when told to pull their foreskins back during physical inspections, pretended to with a sleight of hand. A Wehrmacht veteran who managed to pass muster during barracks checks was found out by a French prostitute while on leave in Paris. He believed she never turned him in because they were both “outcasts.”

How did those Jewish men rationalize serving a regime that was out to destroy them and their families? How did they justify masquerading as Aryans?

Some believed they could save their families by serving. One Mischlinge told of going to a Gestapo jail to help his Jewish father only to learn that the man had been sent to Dachau. He then volunteered in the Wehrmacht hoping it would help his father’s plight. It didn’t. Two brothers, whose gentile father had divorced their Jewish mother when the racial laws were promulgated, made a point of wearing their uniforms when they visited her. She was nonetheless sent to a camp.

Perhaps the answer to their moral quandary lies in another question. What else could they have done? Refusing to serve, trading in their father’s or grandfather’s Iron Cross for their own yellow star would have sent one more member of the family to Auschwitz. A Wehrmacht lieutenant maintains that he always felt Jewish inside, but military service was the only hope for survival. Another veteran felt certain that God guided him into the military to save his life.

and now it’s a shining example of neighbourly love?
Israel have treated Gaza as an open prison, razed it to the grounds, slaughtered 40,000 + people and you’re grasping at that straw?
    ffs

Israel is arguably that right now. I can't imagine anyone from outside would want to visit there in the next 10 to 20 years, even if the fighting miraculously stops.

People should understand - Israel is not our friend in the Middle East - they are an American strategic asset that has gone rough, just like the Mujahideen in Afghanistan were an asset - until they weren't.

Israel has mutated into an existential threat to us all.

The conflict is an existential threat to us all, and all parties are responsible for it. The adults need to step in; the situation has gone way too far.

Again, false, even those who joined voluntarily often did so out of a misguided sense of duty and obligation. Again, from the article:

Another force that encouraged men to serve was the culture in which they had been raised. In 19th- and early-20th-century Germany, obedience ranked high on the list of virtues. Reverence for the head of the family, the rabbi, the teacher, the kaiser had been instilled in them since boyhood. Individuality was neither encouraged nor valued. Often, it was not tolerated. One Mischlinge naval officer was educated at a strict Prussian school and punished by his father on the rare occasions when he didn’t excel there.

I highly doubt that the individuals who served willingly were "happily" doing so, as you claim. I would imagine that they would have been wrestling with the dilemma in their minds. It certainly could not have been easy. And they certainly would not have done a 180 degree turn after the last years of the 1930s, as that could have got them a one-way train trip to a gas chamber.

This, also, is unlikely to apply to an Israeli-Arab serving on Israel's Supreme Court.

I'd love to visit that region… Israel, Lebanon, Palestine… when the fighting miraculously stops.

Jerusalem is well worth visiting - but other than that Israel is totally unremarkable as a place to visit - very little to see. I regret that when I visited I didn't make provision to visit Petra or Egypt - two far more interesting places. Once you leave Israel into a neighbouring Arabic/semitic country there is no easy way back in.
