I might be wrong, but they go by the information you provide. They don't collect information from the Irish authorities as far as I know. So it's up to you to prove that you are in fact entitled to pay class 2 and not class 3. People have mentioned here that they paid some class 2 and some class 3, so it's definitely not that you are not working now. The best way is to go to my welfare . ie and get an Irish contributions statement showing what years you paid 52 prsi contributions and this will show the years you worked. Then send that along with a letter explaining your situation. And why you should be paying class 2.

UK revenue just rang me confirming that I can pay class 2 contributions after 16 months from my first application ,at last, she was very apologetic to how long it took .

The only class 3 if I wanted to pay was when I was made redundant in 2013 when I was unemployed for 7 months, all other years from 2006 , (don't know why not 2004/05 when I started working in Ireland), and going forward will be class 2 , don't think I will pay them all, she said I should ring the future UK pension service for advice.

Born in NI have NI number

paid 3 years have to pay 7 class 2 to get 145 ish/week at age 66

how are some people paying for multiple decades?

tip if they ask you to pay class 3 then just re apply it sometimes gets adjusted to class 2 for no apparent reason

A stupid question, but I'll ask it anyway. Any hope of any ROI tax benefit to paying these contributions?

Interesting question, but I'd say they are not tax-deductible to Irish tax. The NI contributions are analogous to PRSI here that pays for state benefits including pensions, and PRSI is levied entirely separately to USC and tax.

Somebody should bring a court case that this discriminates against cross-border workers, which it does.

I have a private pension from the UK I still pay into (20 years). I have 10 years UK state pension. Wife will have full contributory state pension here. Is it worth paying up the state pension in UK to 35 years or will I be taxed into oblivion?

I know married lads that havent declared UK state pension here and collect both UK and ROI state pension in cash...

Why would you still pay into a UK private pension if you're not getting tax relief in it? If you can pay voluntary contributions into the UK state pension it's likely to be be much better value than any private pension.

I guess it's a personal matter, but I've never had an issue paying a higher level of tax on a higher level of income. I like the peace of mind that comes with being tax compliant.

If your former employer is paying into your UK pension until retirement let them pay. You keep your money.Everything is taxable in life including pensions. You must be looking at 40% rate easily by collection year

Does this work the other way round ? Can an English person who worked here for X years, return to England and and receive an Irish pension ?

Thanks Jo. Blighty is fairly generous in that case.

Extremely generous. The SW will try their best to deduct your UK time off the Irish pension entitlement.

Can I ask what account you made the payment to? I have seen 2 different HMRC accounts listed, I think one is for contributions for the current tax year, the other for historical shortfall contributions:

    1. GBS Re NICO Receipts HMRC 20-20-48 30944793
    2. HMRC NIC Receipts GBP 08-32-20 12001004

also looking for the answer for this - have been confirmed for Class2s - but can't seem to figure out how/where to pay them!

I found the online information a bit confusing, but ultimately I paid my Class 2 contributions to the second one - (HMRC NIC Receipts GBP 08-32-20 12001004). (However, maybe this worked because I used Revolut ?)

I got the info here: https://www.gov.uk/pay-class-2-national-insurance/make-online-telephone-bank-transfer and followed the instructions for Paying from a UK Bank Account. I used a Revolut A/C to send sterling, and the sterling account details in the app shows that it's a London based account.

I didn't have an 18-digit reference number so I followed this advice (from the same web page) when adding a reference to the payment:

    > If you either live abroad or live in the UK but are paying for a period when you worked abroad,
    > you need to use a different reference number.
    > Use your National Insurance number followed by ‘IC’, your surname then your initial.
    > If your bank limits you to a certain number of characters, you should use your National Insurance
    > number followed by ‘IC’ and as much of your surname as possible.
    > Example
    > If your name is Anne Jones, you’d write the reference as QQ123456AICJONESA

    Hope this helps.

This is the back of my letter I received to pay voluntary class 2 contributions for the period 09/04/2023 to 06/04/2024.

I am going to say NICO is National Insurance Contributions Overseas

Finally received my letter confirming my class 2 payments, now the years I can pay are from 2006 to 2024 which would come to about £ 4500, which is way above what I can pay.

I was thinking I would pay 2023/2024, all the following years until I can draw my pension, do you get a reminder every year to make payments.

I noticed the amounts per year are different 2022/23 €163, 2023/24 €179, can pay for a particular year or would I have to pay my last year 2023/24.

Is it straight forward going on line and making payments and explaining what year you are paying for.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,615 ✭✭✭swampgas

Maybe pick the years you are going to pay (I'd start with the oldest?), make a single payment for those, and send a letter explaining what the breakdown is and which years you are paying for. I included a copy of the letter they sent me breaking down the payments, as a reference. Then give it a few weeks and phone them to confirm that they have received the payment and your letter.

I was eligible to pay for 18 years, but only wanted to pay 8 initially. I made the required payment and rang them a few days later to confirm they had received it and to let them know which years to allocate it to (2007 to 2014).

4500GBP sounds high, unless you have some Class 3 in the mix?

Also, don't forget that April 2025 is the deadline for pre-2020 years, you can continue to buy back later years after this deadline.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,567 ✭✭✭SCOOP 64

Good to know you can still pay back for years after 2020 after April deadline.

Yes some years class 3 £824 which i will leave out.

Thinking of doing by post and sending a cheque as the online payment seems a bit confusing, i suppose the cheque would have to be in sterling have to see how i do that.

For future years do they send you a reminder by post when to pay?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14 rob_satellites

Yes I got a letter this year around May to remind me to pay for 2023-2024. The tax year in UK is April to March. Hence why there is a bit of 2023 and 2024. It says on the letter that if you don't pay for a continuous 2 years they stop sending the reminder letters.

I paid by bank transfer. Easier than cheque.

Just went into my local branch, told them how much I wanted the sterling amount to be and they looked after it all. Paid a few quid in charges.

Even easier by Revolut if you use that. I'll be doing it that way next time. Just open a sterling account in the Revolut app, move money to it from your euro Revolut account, then you just to a domestic transfer to HMRC.

I never got this letter with my State pension statement with class 2 contributions payable.

Have been looking on HRMC online on bank details to pay from abroad only from UK i can find, is it the same as the ops letter?
