I made my payment for historical Class 2 contributions in mid December from my Revolut GBP account to HMRC NIC Receipts, sort code 08-32-20 acct 12001004.

I called them on +44 191 203 7010 today to check - 20 mins on hold then sorted in 2 mins. Agent told me the money was received to their account same day, and she noted which years I wanted the payment applied to. Very friendly - I love the Geordie accent and could have chatted to her all day! That's me with 30 years contributions now, just have to pay the £180 or so each April until I get to the full 35 years.

I'd suggests anybody needs to phone and chase them up to make sure contributions have been applied correctly. Only annoyance was their automated system asking for a UK postcode (wouldn't accept Eircode) , even though I had selected overseas. I ended up giving my last UK postcode just to progress the call.

As others have said, the contribution record on the app/website doesn't accurately reflect the letter I got - website shows all Class 3 but letter correctly had a lot of these as Class 2

From your description it would seem that you should have 18 + 3 = 21 years of UK NI credits so another 14 years of contributions going forward should entitle you to a full UK OA contributary pension at 67. Since you worked in the UK for 18 years up to last year you don't need to buy back any years, but you have another 25 years to make the remaining 14 years of contributions required. Since you have sent of the documentation to HMRC the easiest way should be to pay each years contribution (should be class 2 since you worked up to your time of leaving UK and started work in Ireland the following week) going forward after you get the notification in April/May each year. Best of luck. It's a good feeling having such a nice safety net. I was thinking, depending on your plans for residing in Ireland into the future you might want to investigate how many contributions you currently have and how many you need to qualify for an Irish contribution pension also, but with a potential 24 years of working life to go before Irish pension age you still have plenty of scope

Thanks very much for the feedback.

FYI I have 267 combined reckonable contributions and credited contributions for pension. By my reckoning I'm about halfway to qualifying for the minimum number of contributions required to receive the basic state pension in Ireland or roughly 5 more years of continuous monthly contributions.

just note that while 10 years (520 paid contributions) is needed to qualify for the pension, if that is all you have you’ll only receive 25% of the maximum rate. I’m sure you’ll have more by the time you reach 66. I’m just pointing out that in 9 years time, the pension will be on strictly pro-rata basis with 2080 (40 years) needed for the full rate

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 650 ✭✭✭RCSATELLITES

Was just about to write that. Now what would be good to know is, can the op use her 21 years of UK contributions (not voluntarily ones) to qualify for the Irish pension.

Is it possible to get the full UK, then use UK contributions to get the full Irish?

If you have worked or lived in other countries, such as the UK, you might still qualify for State Pension (Contributory), even if you do not qualify based on contributions paid in Ireland.

If you have worked in Ireland and in one or more EU states, your social insurance contributions from each EU state may be added to your Irish social insurance contributions to help you qualify for one of the social welfare payments listed below. State pension.

Can anyone tell me how a ROI resident, who worked in the North a long time ago, find out exactly how much NI contributions they made?

Tried the HMRC website but those bots are terrible to try to get info out of.

My understanding is that you can transfer all of your contributions between countries.

You can't, for example, take 5 "surplus" years from Country A and move them to Country B while maintaining your benefits in Country A.

    Am open to correction.

    That would sound right.

For various reasons including living and working in other (non UK) countries over the years I reckon I'll be 150 or so contributions short by the time I reach 66. Is there a way I can make extra / voluntary contributions over the next few years in the run up to retirement so that by the time I do get to 66 in 2035 I have the full compliment of 2,080 contributions made to fully qualify for the Contributory State Pension?

@mods: If this isn't appropriate for this thread (seems to correlate strongly with the main subject) and it should be in a thread of its own please feel free to move.

Are you working in Ireland at the moment paying the full 52 weeks contributions? If so you can't add any more to it. But have you looked at voluntary contributions when you were working outside of Ireland. This depends on the country that you worked in and how long ago it was and other variables like having at least 520 contributions in order to pay voluntary ones.

Have to added times that you would have received credited contributions eg out on sick leave, job seeking into your calculations. Could there have been a year when you were looking after kids and could apply for the homemakers scheme.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,815 ✭✭✭54and56

Thanks @RCSATELLITES, The last time I worked outside Ireland was 2003 to 2005 in Thailand so I have 0 paid contributions for those years.

I guess the best thing I can do is call / contact this DSP section and see what they have to say?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 650 ✭✭✭RCSATELLITES

No problem. Yes definitely contact them and ask there is no harm and there might be something available.

There is also where you can work for longer up until you are 68 or so, now I haven't looked at the details but that way could get you over the threshold. 👍

Also if you have any properties rented or even investments and don't work like me you can pay S contributions which cover you for the pension. So you don't technically have to be "working" .

Just an update for others. I made my first payment for back years and rang that number previously given 44 191 203 7010

Was on hold yesterday afternoon for an hour and gave up but tried this morning and was waiting 26 minutes. They could see my payment but it wasn't allocated as yet. I gave her the years and she made a note of it. There is an app you can download and this will also show you what years are paid and what years you can pay. But note with the years that you can pay, it will always reflect Class 3 contributions even if you have been told you can pay Class 2. There system isn't clever enough to know this and she said it is causing confusion. So the amounts showing as outstanding are way more than they should if you are looking at the app. Thanks to all the contributors to this thread, I don't think I would have gotten this far with out everyone's help.

Just on this Class2 /Class 3 cock up. I received my letter with payments referring to Class 3 only. I ignored it at that time as I think they were looking at almost a €1000pa for each individual back year payment.

Should I just now ring the UK and tell them that it is the Class 2 I should be paying and seek figures under that class as opposed to the higher rate?

    Thanks lads.

I made my second payment a couple of weeks ago this morning I received this by text.

MyGov: Your pre-approved 2024/2025 tax credit repayment could not be processed. Please verify your information at Mygovepayment.com.

    Number it came from, +353857794376

    The link doesn't work mygovepayment.com

Doesn't look right but to get it when I just made a payment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 650 ✭✭✭RCSATELLITES

    SCAM!!!!!!!

Mygov is the irish version nothing to do with hmrc. Just a coincidence you got it. That's how people get caught out.

Don't click the link for God sake

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 85 ✭✭gerrykeegan

I would say 100% that is a scam, you are just unlucky it follows a payment you made.

Yes, if your letter says Class 3 then this means that you haven't been approved for Class 2. You should ring them as you'll need to appeal the decision if you believe you're entitled to Class 2.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 85 ✭✭gerrykeegan

If you can prove you are employed in another country then they will accept Class 2. You only have till the 5th of April to get it sorted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 650 ✭✭✭RCSATELLITES

You need to prove that you are in fact entitled to pay the Class 2. Class 3 is the default and like everything in life, you need to fight for what you feel you are entitled to. If you sent the cf83 form with all the information they asked, did they still come back with class 3. Did you say you left the UK immediately after finishing working there and started a job in another country. Did you send proof of those jobs, dates addresses where you worked. If you didn't then send a cover letter to say you feel you are entitled to pay class 2 as you meet the 2 x criteria for class 2 payments.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,008 ✭✭✭Fann Linn

Thanks a lot lads for the advice. Yes, I'd say they just hit me with the default. I'll get back in touch with them immediately and give them all my information. I literally left the UK and started with the PS over here about two weeks later, so wage slips, Revenue p60s etc are readily available.

    Thanks again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,509 ✭✭✭SCOOP 64

Thought it didn't look right, just a coincidence i just made a payment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,028 ✭✭✭✭fritzelly

Glad I found this - didn't know you could claim UK pension so happy days

Gave them a ring, 5 min hold if that and got a lovely Scottish woman. Apparently have 15 years contributions (that can't be right) and about £85 weekly pension.

Filled the form in online and now just wait to see how much it's gonna cost me, no chance of a full pension for me, not gonna be working that long - I'd be paying back to 2006 so hopefully all Cat 2 so I can pay it all off one go lol

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 650 ✭✭✭RCSATELLITES

Yeah definitely, happened with me as well. Got the yeah you can pay class 3, but I sent another cover letter stating that I am entitled to pay class 2 and sent a few photocopies of Revenue documents. Then I got approved for class 2. It's a huge difference in price so well worth the hassle of writing cover letter and sending proof. Get it in before April 👍👍👍

Ring them, but I definitely recommend sending written correspondence.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,521 ✭✭✭✭Goldengirl

Thought had too many years credited as well but they credit you about 3 years for education so that all are on a level playing field .

It's really worth persevering through the bureaucracy for what is a decent pension .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,008 ✭✭✭Fann Linn

Will definitely do it this weekend. I've got my P60s etc so I'll get the letter off asap. Do you happen to know what address I should send it to or is it just the generic one where everything is addressed to?

    Thanks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,045 ✭✭✭Gorteen

Is there a telephone number you can share to confirm payments made for additional entitlements.

I paid by bank transfer, on behalf of my wife, for additional entitlements last April and have yet to receive any confirmation for the sum paid. The money left my account but it may as well have gone into a black hole. I'm concerned that we haven't yet received confirmation of the payment.

Does anyone know how you could find out your national insurance number if you worked in the North but have always been resident in the Republic?

Tried registering online with hmrc but eventually come to a question that can't be answered. Either looking for my NI number, which don't have a record of, or else asking what years I worked in certain jobs, and can't remember that exactly.

Have also been asked for a postcode where I was resident, but that never applied.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,191 ✭✭✭jj880

Got mine from a payslip. If you dont have a payslip could you still contact who you worked for?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,294 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Yeah , was thinking that. Will give it a go, cheers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 236 ✭✭Mach 3

I was possibly talking to the same woman a weeks ago - Ann was her name IIf I remember correctly.

I asked her about changing from class 3 to class 3 contributions as shown on my account, she said you can now fill in the form online instead of posting it. She also informed me that as long as they had received the form by April 5 that it would be still processed.

Some on here are saying that payment s have to in by April 5 as I voiced my concerns of being to lste.

Just get it in was the "strong" message I got from her.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,028 ✭✭✭✭fritzelly

She told me the same thing - as long as the application was in you can still claim back to 2006 after April or that's what I took it to mean

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,294 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Have completed form CA5403 to request ni number by post.

    Hopefully that'll work.

I'll checked my notes and found two numbers, but can't be sure if either of them is correct:
    +44 191 218 3600
    +44 191 203 7010

I'll dig though my notes tomorrow and see if I can find a better answer. (It's possible the number has changed in the meantime too, I suppose.)

Called this number 0044 191 2037 010 earlier and got an answer in minutes (after all the automated stuff)

How long is it taking for them to update the online record nowadays?

I paid my class 2's in August, confirmed they received payment, but still showing as Class 3 on the website.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 956 ✭✭✭homewardbound11

paid in December. Updated last week. Hopefully it will materialise into something when the time comes .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,046 ✭✭✭The Continental Op

    See my post #462

Currently its taking 56 Weeks from receipt of monies before its allocated

. If it gets within 6 months of pension age and still not allocated call to get it sorted as they can put it through as a priority.

Wake me up when it's all over.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,521 ✭✭✭✭Goldengirl

My problem with this is if not showing payment of NIC paid and no receipt issued for payment or anything to say what level of pension is going to be paid , it is very doubtful that anyone should continue to pay annual NICs when they arise.

    I am in this position.

I paid last July (beginning) and have been assured last October that they have received the payment and it will be applied within 6 weeks . Still not done . I also asked for a receipt at the very least . Promised but still nothing

I can't afford to pay more if I don't receive some receipt of payment

It goes against every sensible approach that we are expected to pay more large sums of money with nothing being updated online or a letter of receipt. I appreciate they are busy and swamped etc but it is very poor practice and frankly bordering on negligent at this stage .

    I find it worrying .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,509 ✭✭✭SCOOP 64

Spoke to them Friday just to confirm my recent payment, was told it will take up to a year to allocate your payment to the pacific year you requested and to update on line.

I found most of the people I have spoken to pleasant and helpful but this time he just wanted to get rid of my me , repeating didn't you ask my colleague these questions last time?.

I sent money at end of October....called last week they said they had received nothing...I sent a registered letter with the details last week, also lodged a complaint another call needed I am guessing zzz

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,509 ✭✭✭SCOOP 64

That's one thing I can say for them when you send a payment it is pretty quick when they can confirm they have it, normally about a week , I have sent 2 payments now a month apart

Did you send your national insurance number with your payment .

I paid last April. Still not reflected on my online record.

However when I was last talking to them in September, they offered me written confirmation of my payment and the years it's being allocated to.
