Why do you think DJ McFly on Dublin City FM isn't operating at the same level? What amount of money should a low level DJ get on any local radio station?

it’s been proven many times that it’s the slot and not the host that brought in the listeners.
Sean O’Rourke and Callan both grew the slots over their more well-known predecessors Kenny and Tubridy.

You do know that Callan’s Kicks and the morning slot are different shows with different formats don’t you? If you were tuning in this morning for him to attack MLMcD as he does on Callan’s Kicks it’s you who are at fault on this occasion.

Callan usually begins his show with a satirical vignette on the days affairs especially when the story of the day is domestic or American politics. I thought he could have got a lot more mileage out of the weekends stories and SFs troubles. It was tame by his standards for that segment tbh.

Just my observation, but maybe I got it all wrong.

For someone who said they only dropped into this thread once a fortnight I feel we're blessed this past week.

I can rarely listen during the time the daily show is scheduled due to work commitments. Perhaps it’s changed stylistically from when I last caught it, but to me at least the daily show was just a light-hearted talk show that covered fairly light-weight topics and was focused on not upsetting the apple cart too much; a sort of break for the brain between the meatier Morning Ireland and Claire Byrne as it were.

I know he’s thrown out the occasional very brief impersonation (usually confined to a catchphrase or a buzzword the person being portrayed would be known for) and joke in the show, but I found it an altogether very different proposition to the Callan’s Kicks for at.

Likewise I may be wrong (as I have already stated I can rarely during the morning, particularly between 9-10), and maybe the daily show now has more humour* injected into it than I remember.

    • humour of course being subjective, for example some people find/found shows like Dad’s Army and Last of the Summer Wine amusing. No doubt someone will be along soon to proclaim that Callan is as funny as having his scrotum punctured with a sharp object or some equally painfully injury…..

It looks like all of our Christmases fortnights have come at once.

Callan pulls his punches when it comes to criticising Sinn Féin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,305 ✭✭✭Peter Dragon

MLMcD - along with many other SF politicians (O’Neill, Doherty, O’Broin….and others) - is mocked on almost every single episode of Callan’s Kicks; indeed I can’t recall one where she wasn’t/they weren’t.

Your assertion he holds back on them is laughable.

As I said, comedy is subjective. I heard an ad today for yet another pre-Christmas Mrs. Brown’s Boys live show in December. I say yet another as there does seem to be quite a high frequency of these tours.

Quite why anyone would pay to see that tripe is beyond me, but clearly there’s a market for it….somewhere. Tickets were from €49.65 before fees for anyone interested btw.

Callan is nowhere near as venomous towards SF as he is towards FF/FG. Feel free to disagree but I’m just calling it as I hear it, and I’m far from a FF/FGer.

He’s not funny no matter who his targets are.

Those right reasons being pirate radio hasbeens? A dubious honour.

The worship around the pirate radio era amongst Irish radio twitchers of a certain age is utterly baffling and I was listening at the time. It was mediocre patter delivered by no-talents. A desperate attempt for Ireland to have its own Radio Luxembourg moment.

This piece by Tubs in his "diary" (already mentioned by RoTelly, but this needs reposting!):

"The beauty of the show is that there’s trust between the presenter and the guests so that people are comfortable drifting outside their comfort zone."

How the fúck can the presenter review his own show like that. Though perhaps desperation is kicking in.

'I haven't lost my soul. Trust in me'.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,305 ✭✭✭Peter Dragon

Well he is after all “the most trusted man in Ireland”, so if we can’t trust him, who can we trust?

    🤷‍♂️

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,305 ✭✭✭Peter Dragon

As per a previous post humour is subjective; so if you don’t like his style of humour, that’s perfectly fine. We can agree to disagree on that.

Your assertion that he’s not as venomous towards SF as he is towards other parties is something we will also have to disagree on. I would argue he’s an equal opportunity offender when it comes to dishing it out.

Perhaps if you’d listen a bit more you’d see it thus.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 171 ✭✭The_Macho_Man

I’ve listened to plenty and I know what I hear: he’s a “satirist” who is clearly far more sympathetic to Sinn Féin than Fianna Fáil or Fine Gael. I don’t really care, that’s his prerogative but it’s ridiculous to deny it.

It’s similar to your own bias to Callan himself. In the matter of full disclosure I think the reader should be made aware that you sent me a PM crying about a post I made criticising Callan a few days ago.

I dunno if you’re Callan or he’s your mate or what but you’re clearly a Callan superfan who thinks the sun shines out of his arse and thinks he’s above any kind of fair criticism. You have no place to debate anyone on his programme’s merits objectively.

Even for Tubridy, it is bad. His fans might appreciate it but he's a radio and TV presenter out of his depth in print media. He is no longer a daily part of the lives of his former audience who now listen to Callan each day and watch Kielty on Friday nights.

    Full disclosure?

Well if that’s what you want, here’s the screenshots of the conversation. You messaged me first btw, and 3 of the 5 messages contained therein are from you. 1 of my 2 is politely asking you to refrain from messaging me btw. The other says nothing of any import.

How exactly was I “crying about a post” you made? My message states that your post clearly gave you away, and you know what I’m referring to there.

    IMG_7651.jpeg IMG_7652.jpeg

Neither of my 2 messages refer to the quality or otherwise of the output on either Callan’s shows, nor is it “crying” over any post you made.

I assume you were trying to bait me into saying something about a poster and then post it here in an effort to have me removed or have sanction applied? Not the most subtle of approaches really is it? If one was to engage in hypothetical speculation it’s almost as if your account was created simply to be an Agent Provocateur of sorts, or to attempt to entrap others. Speaking entirely hypothetically and speculatively of course.

As you asked, I am not a friend or an associate of Oliver Callan. I am also not him, nor have I ever met the man. I was only knowingly in his presence once when he hosted some corporate event I attended. I’m by no means a superfan, but I don’t have the disdain for him that you harbour. Perhaps you shouldn’t hate-listen so much if you despise his material so much? There are so many good podcasts out there to listen to instead for example. Or you could go for a walk or take up a new hobby perhaps?

    I’m off to bed. Goodnight.

Oh, one last thing - why am I in no position to debate anyone on this subject? Are you telling me or ordering me not to post here? Like some other posters you don’t seem particularly welcoming or new voices or opinions that differ from your own.

Really off to bed now. Night!

Everyone has heard of Bryan Turbidity, but very very few have heard him in the last few years.

ugh. What a completely unhinged rant. It’s a bloody radio show we’re talking about.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,305 ✭✭✭Peter Dragon

    Are you ok? Seriously?

You made an allegation against me to which I replied. Now you resort to personal abuse after said reply disproved your allegation - and I’m unhinged? That’s a very strange reading of what has transpired.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,305 ✭✭✭Peter Dragon

I’d agree it’s bad, but it’s the abject lack of effort in that piece that is most worthy of criticism. He would appear to be happy to take the money to pen such pieces, just not put in any effort writing them.

  • Site Banned Posts: 5,975 ✭✭✭podgeandrodge

Exactly. The lack of effort and the disdain for the "reader" of this tripe.

You can see the tiny element of self awareness (tiny) where he feels the need to tell the "reader" that he won't harp on about his podcast EVERY week!

I read the piece anyway, and found myself looking for the end, but that was it, BOD's childhood memory of his aunt. A truly shocking story that no guest would ever have told publicly, unless, of course, they had complete trust in the presenter.

Episode 2 of The Bookshelf podcast landed last week and while I won’t be talking about it every week, I just wanted to mention one aspect of this episode.

The beauty of the show is that there’s trust between the presenter and the guests so that people are comfortable drifting outside their comfort zone.

This week’s guest Brian O’Driscoll, right, was chatting away about reading as a kid when he suddenly remembered an incident from his childhood that he wanted to share.

He was a boy of around seven when a mean-spirited teacher sent Brian to the classroom next door to show the teacher there how bad his schoolwork was.

The teacher in question was Brian’s late auntie Anne. Obviously a kind and emotionally intelligent lady, she knew what to do and so Brian returned to his difficult teacher who demanded to know what Anne had said. Brian explained that she gave him a treat to commend him on his excellent handwriting!

A deft, diplomatic move that saved Brian’s blushes and told the mean teacher in no uncertain terms what she thought of him.

It was an emotional moment in the interview and one that drew a lot of comments from listeners who felt it was a beautiful moment with most of them reminiscing about teachers who were there for them (and a few about the bad eggs).

It was a life lesson that would stand to Brian many years later when his diplomatic skills would be tested on rugby pitches around the world.

    Mod Note

Right there is a load of posting going on that most people here know is outside the charter. There will be no further warnings or explanations, read the charter, post better, no personal attacks.

"It was an emotional moment in the interview and one that drew a lot of comments from listeners"

Not strange for a popular radio show with callers and texters. Instagram seems to be the only feedback (doesn't seem to be much interaction on the part of Tubridy based on the screenshots posted) or have comments been enabled on Youtube? It seems like the podcast is an attempt to recreate the dynamics of the LLS in that it is almost a multi-episode audition for a return to RTE..

I can confirm that comments are disabled on YouTube for Ryan’s podcast.

I can't see him ever being able to successfully host a live call in show again in Ireland as there'll always be people wanting to know how to set up a barter account and other ways to process undeclared earnings.

Basically Tubs has joined Irish TV, if anyone remembers them.

"It was an emotional moment in the interview and one that drew a lot of comments from listeners"

Of course this emotional moment was nothing of the sort, being an childhood "memory" that was probably created an hour earlier for the usual mammie instagram effect, given the makeup of the low listenership. BOD knows how to get the insta mammies salivating too.
