So mine was today. I'd say a few thoughts.

You will sleep badly then night before. Nerves will wake you. Others I talked to at the start were the same. It's normal.

Because you slept bad and don't feel great you'll doubt your plan. Trust yourself. Trust the training you've done. Trust your plan.

You will hit a wall at some point and your training will get you through it.

Enjoy it. The atmosphere is fantastic. Not many people do a marathon. And feeling the energy of the crowd is wonderful. Smile, enjoy your run and realise that finishing a marathon is something not a lot of people do

hope your marathon went as you hoped today.

    great words of advice!!

This time 2 weeks it’ll all be over!! You’ll hopefully be out in a pub celebrating or like I was - out for the count on the couch after a takeaway and a glass of something strong. 😁

It’s been a hectic few days and I’ve not had a chance to open the laptop to do up this week’s post but I should be able to tomorrow night - I’ve a lot of thoughts 😁

But the plans for this week are as follows:

    Plan|Monday|Tuesday|Wednesday|Thursday|Friday|Saturday|Sunday
    HHN1|rest|4m easy|6m easy|3m easy|rest|8m LSR|cross
    Boards|rest, cross or 3m rec|3m easy|4m easy|4m w/ 6 x strides|rest, cross or 3m rec|8m
    LSR|rest, cross or 3m rec

Bar a few strides on the Boards plans this week is all EASY pace. No heroics this week, no final little push, no making up for missed miles. We just want to keep the legs ticking over this week and allow them to recover.

In the meantime do post up how the past week has gone and how you are feeling now?

Is anyone else thinking to have family bring a change of clothes and avoid the bag drop? Thinking it might be one less thing to think about on the morning.
Maybe there are advantages to the bag drop I’m not considering though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 931 ✭✭✭marathon2022

The bag drop at DCM is a well oiled machine, I've never experienced a hold up dropping or picking up. Its a great spot for the chats, enjoying the vibe and taking a minute to yourself when its all over. You might think I'm mad but for DCM i reckon its an essential part of the whole experience.

Functionally its going to be closer than whoever you give your cloths, if its a cold day or your sweating from the heat getting your change of cloths will be much handier than searching the milling crowds.

If you have that option then great, go for it. However, I had zero problems with the bag drop, so might be easier just to do it yourself and have the peace of mind that your stuff will be there at the finish.

Is there a reason why they drag everyone into Dublin on the Friday Saturday to get their race number?

Any race I've done they've posted it out. What do people do if they're down the country and is there anyway to get them to post it?

They sell stalls at the expo to merchants to sell their running gear/trips ect. So its ensure maximum footfall

I still never understood that. Surely it costs a fortune to rent out the RDS for 2 days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,228 ✭✭✭JohnnyChimpo

Probably, but I'm sure they've run the numbers

I didn’t find that the bag drop added much extra time onto my day. You have to walk past it going in and on your way back out and I wasn’t waiting much either way. As that area was closed off to the public, most people were just changing around there, sure who else is going to see you only other marathon finishers. Also good to get a change of clothes on asap.

Your family may be waiting max an extra 10 mins to see you at the meeting point.

I will say to everyone if you are using bag drop to double bag your change of clothes. The bag drop is not covered and most of my change got damp/wet.

I agree it’s a pain. I’d gladly pay to have my race number posted. It was grand a few years ago when we used to go up and make a weekend of it as a family. But last year I didn’t want to travel up and back 2 days in a a row so I flew up after work on Fri, got caught in M50 traffic and just made it on time. Have had to book a half day off work this year to get my number.

They won’t post the entries out cos they want people to go to the expo.

How is everyone getting to the race? I'm planning to get the red line Luas but from the map it looks like a 4km walk to the start line which isn't ideal!

Our club organised a bus in and out, which is great. Trains are off as usual so would have needed to drive.

Was an email this morning for this if you were still wondering.

Abbey Street to Merrion Square is less than a mile. 20 mins walk.

The walk back may take 5 times longer 😆

The walk from bag drop to start line is a mile and longer if in a later wave.

posted this in the other DCM thread so I’ll go here

after my week with the 2 kids in hospital I have gone and gotten myself pneumonia. Week of antibiotics.

Am I mad to still do it?

I think that's probably a question best answered by your doctor unfortunately.

If they give the all clear, I don't see why not giving it a go. Fingers crossed that they do and you feel up for it

If they don't, while it would be seriously frustrating, it's not worth going against medical advice for, there will be other Marathons

The vast majority of doctors will say no without even looking at you. You’ve just got to see how you feel towards the end of next week. Only you know if you’re able for it or not. The more experience you get the more you know what a niggle or injury is. When you’re ok to return. Same with illness. I go with the basic rule of if it is below the neck then maybe don’t run. If you’re barking like a dog then maybe not. Listen to your body but 10 days is a long time

It can be heartbreaking to put in all this work and not get see the reward at the end of it, but you need to consider what you are taking on. I'm with witness on this, the only feedback you should listen to is your Doctor. Considering you previously posted about getting chills on some of your runs, no one here should be advising you to give it a go. Not to scare you (too much) but anyone who has run a couple of marathons has likely seen people laid out on the ground being attended to by paramedics or seen ambulances whizzing by.

I've been in a similar position a couple of times with the last being Donadea 50k earlier this year. I picked up some respiratory infection the week before and was bedridden for a couple of days. I managed a couple of runs the days before the event but it was a miserable experience. Dropped out after 27k after enduring an hour of feeling horrible. I should never had started the race. I was lucky that Donadea was a looped course so I dropped out where my bag was and didn't have to figure out how to get across the city if feeling really poor.

The only advice apart from talking to your Doctor I will offer is that any goals you had previous to your illness should be out the window.

I got stung on the neck on Monday of last week whilst out running (easy 5k). I felt a bit off when I got home, however I had not eaten much before hand. In the days after I had a sore throat, was coughing and generally feeling ropey. Missed the last LSR and some S&C too. I only tested the waters again this past Friday. Could I have come back sooner? Possibly, yes. This is minor compared to pneumonia. We run when we are able to, not because we feel we have to. If you are unable to run and within the Dublin area, and not too sick, see if they still need volunteers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,519 ✭✭✭Sunny Dayz

oh no! You had plenty going on as it was with the smallies being unwell.

first and foremost rest up and get well soon. The only person who can really advise you about whether you should take part in the marathon is your doctor. See how your week of antibiotics goes and check with your health professional then, depending on how you are feeling.

As others have said and given their own experience - taking part in a race when you are under the weather could do more harm than good. You could make yourself more ill. It’s a decision we’ve had to make in our own house where my husband got ill in Sept and was unable to run for the month, missed all his long runs. He was hoping to try for a long run at the end of Sept but didn’t feel up to it and pulled the plug on the marathon for this year. I was relieved because I had a real concern that it would put his body under too much stress and he would relapse. Instead he is getting himself back out running a bit now again, thinking ahead to the half marathon we have abroad in the Spring and he said he’s defo doing Dublin next year.

If you do decide to run, you end up having a really lousy run and be put off doing a marathon again. The marathon is a few hours long - that’s a long time to be suffering. I experienced that myself during the summer during a half, was brewing something but I didn’t know at the time and it knocked my confidence in my running.

If you decide not to run, perhaps look ahead in the race calendar for a half or a full in the coming month or two to target when you recover.

But most importantly get well soon.

No big city marathon post numbers out regadless of what stalls are selling what. Its more of a deterrent to people looking to sell / pass numbers on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 329 ✭✭SimpleDimple

Ah no that’s awful. I hope you feel better soon whatever you decide to do

Hi folks, anybody any experience of parking at Stillorgan Luas park & ride on marathon day? Was looking at it as an option for parking up and getting the Luas in to town, alternatively any good spots to park near enough to start? I understand we will need to walk some distance wherever we park. I could park at Red Cow but think it will be extremely busy. TIA

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 83 ✭✭howdydoo83

Manchester does. Also doesn't bother with an expo or a goody bag at the end.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 282 ✭✭comanche_cor

I am sorry to hear this, what rotten luck! I hope you feel better soon.

The Luas could be operating on bank holiday hours too, you could try messaging them to check what time the trams go in the morning and how often just in case it's not as often as you'd like

There's another one at Glencairn too (two stops down) if Stilorgan is busy but I'd guess it will be fine at the time you plan to park
