Of course you can have monthly debit card payments, how else do Netflix/Disney+/Amazon Prime etc get their monthly payments? In order to set up a direct debit, you will have to provide your IBAN. If it was a standing order, the amount wouldn't have changed unless the OP changed it

You can definitely do a monthly debit card payment I have a number of bills/subscribtions being paid in this way e.g. my phone bill from gomo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,391 ✭✭✭Yggr of Asgard

You can have reoccurring charges on debit/credit cards.

In fact, Mastercard even has a service where they update the merchant automatically with new card details if the card used to sign up for reoccurring charges changes expiry or even gets replaced.

But in any case, the poster should check with the company that did the charge if they deducted more than the usual.

As others said netflix/gomo are using this, hell even klarna uses it for their pay in 3 installments utilizes this function.

GoMo does not offer direct debits from a current account (the one where you have all the nice rights), they indeed charge your credit/debit card each month (which gives you less rights), it might smell like a direct debit but is not a SEPA direct debit!

With a SEPA direct debit you have rights and can cancel it easy and even get a refund for 8 weeks. On the regular debit from credit card/debit card you don't have such luxury.

Gomo have my Revolut card details, they do not have my account info for a DD nor do they even have the option of doing so. Same for YouTube premium, Disney and a few other services that are charged on my card automatically every month.

"For a quick & easy way to update your direct debit/recurring card payment…"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 442 ✭✭CoffeeImpala

What they actually do is outlined in the previous paragraph where no mention is made of direct debits.

"For GoMo customers, this will mean that any recurring card payment which you had set up on your GoMo account using an Ulster Bank or KBC issued Debit or Credit Card will need to be updated with alternative payment details."

Of you started by saying "You can't do a monthly debit card payment". What else would you call a recurring card payment? Thanks for providing a link to directly contradict your initial statement.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 742 ✭✭✭jrmb

That's a mistake. They don't accept payment other than by card.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,879 ✭✭✭bennyx_o

    It's not.

There's a lot of confusion around recurring card payments with people thinking they're direct debits, but they're not. As @Yggr of Asgard said, with a direct debit, you get a lot more rights (can recall any direct debit in the last 8 weeks, or 13 months if it was unauthorised). It's not as easy to do with a card payment

Did you actually go to Gomo and search for direct debit to give us that old outdated nugget to try to tell us they offer direct debit?

They don't, check the terms and conditions, they clearly state that:

7.2       You must pay your bill by debit /credit card.

And as a former Gomo customer I can tell you debit/credit card only. And that is less customer friendly than a SEPA direct debit in case of issues with your bill (too high, double charges etc.) .

Everyone should stop bickering, quit being so cheap and just move to a real telecommunications provider like Vodafone 🤣

Oh and pay with a reoccurring revolut card payment of course to keep on thread topic 😉

    Yes.

From the OPs position at this stage, it's irrelevant whether it's a direct debit or a debit card transaction. The key question is - who initiated the transaction. It looks like the transaction was initiated by the organisation, so he needs to contact the organisation to sort it out.

Lads, can we park the debate please, it's not really related to Revolut.

These articles come with the regular click bait headlines….

That said, they should come as a timely warning on two issues:

    • You need to be alert at all times when dealing with online transactions, if you have the slightest doubt then follow up on it.
    • Financial institutions are no longer willing to swallow the costs of fraud. There are two reasons for this - the number of frauds has grown substantially and as the services are well established they can afford the bad PR of things going wrong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,391 ✭✭✭Yggr of Asgard

With Revolut having several security features that others don't have like "spending limits for individual cards one can set" to narrow down where cards can be used including location-based security and now also from which account the money should come, their card security is one of the better ones. That mostly takes care of fraud in which the card owner is not directly involved. Plus, one can immediately freeze the card when there is any suspect activity.

The issue of the attack factor of people is just like with any other bank, where one can take over due to social engineering and other factors.

Now how they managed to get the account up on another device is a question for revolut because in theory there are safeguards that should stop it.

Now a company with no phone support (unless you are ultra) calling me will not fly for me, it's obvious that there is something wrong, let them send me a message via the app and I gladly have a discussion.

And as Jim2007 said, companies are no longer willing to swallow the cost of fraud, now the benefit of Revolut UAB customers over Revolut UK customers is that we are dealing with a bank rather than an electronic money institute which gives sligthly better protection than those of the UK customers.

But there is as much a possiblity of fraud with Irish Banks as there is with banks that are just irish branches, the best is always to be vigilent and ensure that one does not give out too much details.

As long as there are humans, there will be fraud!

I mean, the rule is simple and should be shouted from the rooftops - never ever EVER give anyone a OTP that has been sent to you. Nobody else should ever require it, even someone working for your bank.

No banking app is safe when customers are gullible/unaware and tricked into handing over information.

That said, seems like there was a failing in the part of Revolut too, the scammers should not have been able to log in without scanning their faces.

never ever EVER give anyone a OTP that has been sent to you

If any company rings me and asks me to confirm anything with regards myself, the answer is no. I'll ring the normal customer care line and be asked to be put through to the relevant department. I won't confirm my name over the phone if a company call me let alone hand over a OTP. People who get scammed by this stuff really need to look at themselves.

I'd expect better from the BBC with this documentary.

People handing over their OTP, people allowing access to their account via remote access and setting up new payees based off a phone call and it is Revolutes fault?

I wonder why the likes of Monzo don't have the same issues?

I have never understood why if my account was being be cleared out, why you wouldn't move the balance into a vault etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,391 ✭✭✭Yggr of Asgard

Because most people don't know what Monzo is and its'a bank (unlike revolut uk) and it only has 9 million customers or so compared to revoluts claimed over 40 million, so it's not that widly known and well it has a different business model too.

this summer , I made an error and purchased from a scam website . Revelout sorted it all out for me.
Clearly I made a judgement error and thankfully Revolut recovered all monies when I provided the information . Took 90 days but I recovered all monies .

Anybody know if Revolut works in Hong Kong, for contactless payment and for ATM withdrawal?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,838 ✭✭✭beachhead

It works in other countries in the region. Can't see HK being excluded

Does anyone know if you can top-up a Revolut account from a prepaid debit card?

I've heard of some sites potentially blocking those cards so it'd be good to have a workaround if that ever happens
