I get you. A string quartet for sure changes the dynamic. I think you just got unlucky, I believe the previous dates were exactly what you'd have like to see/hear.

2025 gigs: Selofan, Alison Moyet, Wardruna, Gavin Friday, Orla Gartland, The Courettes, Scissor Sisters, Nine Inch Nails, Stipe, The Rocky Horror Show, Rhiannon Giddens, New Purple Celebration, Nova Twins

Well I procured me a ticket for Rachael Lavelle's Galway gig on 31st October, my first gig since EP 24.

Good to have the Ambassador back but I feel like I was in the final act of a movie. House lights went up when he started having a go at an audience member.

Crows put in a nice hour long set of post-punk shenanigans tonight at the Soundhouse. Thankfully, the new album sounded better live as i find it a tad too polished and lacking the requisite heft of their previous lp's. I hadn't seen them since they supported Idles in Vicar Street but the singer could still pass for Tom Hardy's younger brother! Support came from Belfast outfit Stratford Rise. The first thing that struck me was that they looked like 12 year olds (ok, maybe 15) that were playing dress-up as their favourite late 70s post-punkers. Don't let the duds fool you though, these chaps can play. Black Midi sprung to mind but with a lot more noise. There was lots of reference points, kinda punk-funk, a little proggy and very much on point. Worth keeping an eye out for.

    I'm a Rock n Roll Amputation

Yeah, loved the support, I thought early Bowie was also an influence. Would never have guessed that accent was Belfast but they could certainly play/write. I wonder how old they were when they released their first single?
First time in the Sound House. Is that the smallest stage in Dublin or is there smaller?

Pretty much. There are smaller. Upstairs in Whelans, Cobblestone.

Really enjoyed Crows. Hopefully heading for bigger things.

Stratford Rise’s first single recorded two years ago when they must have been early teens.

The mind boggles. How did they find each other? What were they listening to before they started?

Love expansive and complex music but their brand of avant-prog ain't for me, Clive.

No problem Dudley, if we were all the same, life would be very boring. 😉

Went to see Paddy Dennehy in Little Whelan’s last night.

I could hear the walls shaking with the sound of Blue Pills’ support next door as our support act came on - a poet no less.

By the time Paddy came on, Blue Pills were in full swing.

Paddy then proceeded to sing the same song, on repeat, but with different words each time, for the entire show.

It was a Sunday night out I suppose.

Went to the Wolftones last night.

They put on a good show but the crowd were horrendous. A huge chunk of people just absolutely blitz and stumbling around.

Completely leaped over line from an electric atmostephere to that ferlness that sucks the good out of stuff.

    Sorry you didn't enjoy it

On the other hand, I thought it was wonderful. Love the rawness of his live performances. I definitely connect more to his first album, so there were ebbs and flows for me. The middle run of Little Light, One Good Reason and Snow Song was very special. One Good Reason in particular was awesome

The two singers with him added to most songs, though a few times I felt they slightly got in the way. They did have great voices.

First time in Little Whelan's, nice space. I reckon there were only 30 in there but it felt full. The noise bleed from the main venue was bad though, they could really do with some acoustic panelling on that wall

Don't apologise. It was a learning experience, thank you.

Have been to a few shows in little Whelan's and luckily not had noise bleed issues. That would be very annoying for a show particularly one that is relatively quiet. First album is definitely better.

The Rock Orchestra by Candlelight tonight in Cork Opera House

Very enjoyable and a great mix of songs. Surprised by how much older people were at it. Thought it would be majority young.

Crowded House was a decent gig tonight

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 434 ✭✭Romero

Yeah was there and enjoyed it. Was sorry I missed the Trinity gig a few years back and hadn't seen them since the 90's before Paul Hester left.

I was a bit miffed that they went for the fully seated option, I don't understand why? in the end the group got us all standing for the last couple of songs and the encore.

I'll be very sore about no 'Its Only Natural' but suppose getting 'Mean to me' sort of makes up for it

Those jokes though **** hello thank god I had a pint ha

Yeah Crowded House were in good form, had decent seats. Seemed to be about 2/3 full so I'm guessing that's why it was seated. Too big for some venues and not able to sell out the Point, also a Monday night wouldn't be the easy night to sell a gig.

    Yes, it was fantastic.

Four unique musicians backing her standing behind her in a circle (guitar, violin, double bass, harp)

Sound and her banter and crowd response top notch

Ah delighted to hear it. Great to see that an artist like that can bring an appreciative crowd in Ireland. She has a bit of magic about her, no doubt. And a bit of divilment.
