NYT won't air this interview in full until tomorrow but they got kind of a hot piece they just had to share: JD Vance squirming for 3 whole minutes when asked 5 different times about whether or not Trump lost the 2020 election.

    https://www.nytimes.com/video/players/offsite/index.html?videoId=100000009755918

“In the debate, you were asked to clarify if you believe Trump lost the 2020 election. Do you believe he lost the 2020 election?” she asked.

“I think that Donald Trump and I have both raised a number of issues with the 2020 election, but we’re focused on the future,” said Vance. “I think there’s an obsession here with focusing on 2020. I’m much more worried about what happened after 2020, which is a wide-open border, groceries that are unaffordable. And look—”

“Senator, yes or no?” Garcia-Navarro interjected. “Did Donald Trump lose the 2020 election?”

Instead of answering, Vance replied with his own question. “Let me ask you a question. Is it OK that big technology companies censored the Hunter Biden laptop story, which independent analysis have said cost Donald Trump millions of votes?”

Garcia-Navarro tried for a third time. “Senator Vance, I’m going to ask you again, did Donald Trump lose the 2020 election?”

He again replied with a question. “Did big technology companies censor a story that independent studies have suggested would have cost Trump millions of votes? I think that’s the question.”

Garcia-Navarro went for a fourth attempt. “Senator Vance, I’m going to ask you again. Did Donald Trump lose the 2020 election?”

“And I’ve answered your question with another question,” he replied. “You answer my question and I’ll answer yours.”

“I have asked this question repeatedly,” Garcia-Navarro persisted. “It is something that is very important for the American people to know. There is no proof, legal or otherwise, that Donald Trump did not lose the 2020 election.”

Ultimately he indicates he never would have certified the 2020 election, confirming what has already been suspected: if they win, they'll never certify another election that Republicans don't win. And, they almost certainly won't ever run another ticket of Republicans again unless they similarly, would never certify a win from someone other than Republicans again, either. Going back to what I was just referencing about Machiavellianism…

“Most) prior Republican candidates and winners of the office would have never tolerated those kind of gimmicks to get elected”

Let’s be clear, most rational people in western society haven’t and don’t tolerate such gimmicks TG.

What the republicans tolerate is a reflection more on republicans than it is on Trump - and if he wins, that reflects on essentially the majority of the voters in America for 2024 - quite a sad reflection of just how fcked up those people are

Also, thinking more on this, Trump has also said on multiple occasions that he will be a dictator, that he will prosecute his political opponents and that he will create camps and implement mass deportations.

His fans will down play this, but saying this now normalises the words and actions. If he does win and decides to follow through, there will be a muted response because this has been talked about for so long and it won't seem so outrageous.

If he gets into power he’ll be too busy eating cheese burgers and playing golf to bother about such things like dictatorship- besides he’ll likely not remember anyway considering he can’t even get most peoples names right - he’s just looking for an alternative to spending the next number of years in a courtroom - it’s pretty much as simple as that it this stage

If we know anything about Trump, his memory is fine when it comes to a grudge.

maybe in the past - I get the impression he cares nothing about nobody at this stage except himself , self preservation and lots of money - the simple things in life really

If you haven't figured out how dangerous he is at this stage...

Yes, and while he's on the golf course, the real work will be done by the likes of Stephen Miller and the Heritage Foundation crowd. Much more capable and evil than poor little Donnie.

Wow.Its really low by Obama to come out and shame " his brothers" like that. Playing the "brothers must stick together" card and is as nasty as it gets. Its pure desperation stuff and really insulting

Obama ,you condescending moron.Just because a candidate is black, doesn't mean a black person has to vote for them!

Obama is playing the race and sexism card.

Its racist identity politics is what it is.

    Its condescending and ignorant.

Why doesn’t he just let black people think for themselves?

Its similar to Bidens comments in the last election campaign where he said

"If you have a problem figuring out whether you're for me or Trump, then you ain't black"

Exactly. He is openly telling everyone what he will do and how under threat their democracy is yet it seems 50% of the country don't care.

If you're concerned about racism, do you agree that Trump should promote the idea that immigrants are poisoning the blood of America?

Trump's comments were about illegal immigration. It's a far cry from what you're twisting it into. If you can't discuss in good faith, then why bother?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86,725 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

Sorry is the thread borked again did I miss your post raging about Trump saying Jews 'have to get their heads examined' if they don't vote for him or is your rage about identity politics as selective as I am seeing it.

Its similar to Bidens comments in the last election campaign where he said

"If you have a problem figuring out whether you're for me or Trump, then you ain't black"

The election where he won 87% of the Black vote.

It stands to logic Kamala Harris will easily gain 87% or more of the vote, that is, if your arguments are to believe that a) they are turned off by racist gaffes and 2) are not refusing to vote for a woman.

If it was 50% of the country he would have won in 2020.

But you can't get 50% from 74 million out of 330 million.

And that was WITH the vote of the Cheneys and the Kinziners and the other big red tent Republicans. He doesn't have that this time out. The ranks of the never-trumper Republicans have swelled.

They're still an alarming portion of the public, these seditionists, but I wanna be clear on the number, I don't think it's half and they don't deserve that credit.

It was Nazi esque racist vomit from Trump... Hitler too talked of particular races poisoning the blood of the nation.

The Trump campaign shares fabricated memes of these illiegal immigrants "taking over neighborhoods" - no white faces.

So it is clear there is a racial element to this, when Trump talks of illegal immigrants he is talking about people of colour.

Trump and his campaign are objectively racist.

I don't see how your twisting of it makes it sound less racist.

I wouldn’t be believing everything he says - otherwise you’re no better than his voters

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,032 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

It's not they don't care, I think it's wrong to assume that. Are that 50% capable of critical thinking is probably a better question. I'd probably say 15% of the population are. That's not to say they're stupid, that's probably another 15%.

Those stats wouldn't be reflected in politicians. I was canvassed today, I'm absolutely dumbfounded at some of the answers I got from the candidate who's the main ticket in our locality with an in power government party. So much so don't be surprised to see DrunkMonkey posters in the next few years.

@Dingaan - I've asked you 5 times, and you respond when I direct the question to someone else.

Anyway, please see my quoted post. He doesn't differentiate between illegal and legal.

Any chance you could answer the question - do you agree with him that immigrants are poisoning the blood of the nation?

If a habitual liar says something dangerous, eg. "I'm going to kill you" etc. - is it worth taking the risk. Or when someone tells you exactly who they are, in such a revealing manner, should you err to believe them.

I look to the checks and balances of the American democratic system - I don’t think they’ll make the same mistakes a second time in terms of what they permitted Trump to get away with

True "manliness" is not being so concerned with appearing manly by listening to these idiots. A "real man" shouldn't give a **** about how they drink a milkshake or if a woman runs the country.

A "real man" should be able to express the full range of emotions.

Macho Man Randy Savage was light years ahead of most in this regard, I know it's a character piece but the point stands.

Lot of talk that Harris momentum had weakened. Especially in swing states and mid west.

The big interviews she has done recently have been really poor, uncomfortable watching.

How the f someone can be Veep for so long and unable to answer basic questions off the cuff is unfathomable.

Harris has a dilemma, she has to be visible to stay in the public focus, speak so as to set out her own vision as different to the hard years of Biden for most Americans yet her interview skills are shi7.

What will or can they do to reinvigorate the campaign and will the softening of support continue?

Terrible how young black men have an actual choice in this election. That's why he's pissed. How democratic.

what you believe is entirely your own business but I’ve absolutely no interest in getting riled up by what Trump may or may not do - he’s an idiot who is leading other idiots and if you’re scared of him and spend hours upon hours criticising him and fearing him then he’s won.

That's a non answer. At worst you're admitting that it should be taken seriously, because you go straight to discussing the supposed safeguards.

As much as we could say the "they" will not make the same mistakes - neither will Trump and the MAGA movement. Hitler didn't make the 'same mistakes' either after the Beer Hall Putsch, and the German people and government made whole new mistakes. Similarly, it would be fatal to be so arrogant as to flirt with re-electing someone who wants to be a dictator, on the hubris assumption that the checks and balances will hold. On January 6 we were 1 check, and 1 balance away from the end of the world order as we know it. If Mike Pence had left the Capitol, or been killed, or thrown it to a 6-3 Trump Court (with the MAJORITY on the court, having worked directly for the Bush campaign or decided Bush v Gore in spite of the vote showing Gore won), we wouldn't be having this conversation right now. And that guy has been replaced with JD Vance who, in interviews, namechecks people who want to strip the government down into a right wing theocratic dictatorship, by name (via MSNBC). The stakes of that are far too high to scoff and say 'you don't really believe them when they say explicitly they want to do that, do you?' And while some checks and balances have been strengthened, some have never been weaker.
