    Hey All,.

Not sure where else to post this. I'm waiting on my meter to be upgraded so i can get a charger installed at the side of the house. In the meantime, I'm stuck charging this with a regular socket.

    My question is this.

I charge the car (50KWH Peugeot 2008 GT) about twice per week. Usually takes about 10 hours. At a rate of about 30cent per kwh,. This shouldn't see an increase in 400 units per month should it?

I'm eh……….. mid investigation on why, since I've switched networks from Prepay power to energia, my usage went up by over 400 units (double) in one month, granted I charge the car twice per week instead of once per week last month.

Sorry if this is not the right area, but charging the electric car is the only difference here

Sounds right, 10 hours at 2.3kW on the granny charger is around 25kWh, 8 times a month ~ 400 units.

Yeah 200 units. So in reality I would only be using an extra 100 units this month by charging the car twice as much. Ok,, thanks for that

I got my charger installed while waiting on my meter upgrade

Getting the grant, just looking for pointer for good all round charger that won't break the bank.

I got the EV sync as recommended on here. It cost €1000 for the untethered version before the grant

Apologies if this has been discussed before and general consensus seems to be to get a simple dedicated smart wall charger but… IF using an external socket / commando etc for granny cable charging (or even a non-smart charger like Tesla wall charger), wouldn't this RCBO do the job? Does this (and an earth rod possibly) cover all angles of a safe ev charging setup? Description seems to imply this covers EV charging points.

    https://www.new.ie/40-amp-rcbo-30ma-b-type6-ka-mcbrcd-unit?srsltid=AfmBOoqfzQpuYgThTPXGQ1Xmyna1HOoR706IjPJAfvE2ClqQ6x1sSefQ

"This Type B RCBO is specifically designed for use with EV charging systems, providing essential safety features for modern electrical installations. The unit is a 2-pole, 2-module device with a rating of 40 amps and a sensitivity of 30mA, making it highly effective in detecting and interrupting fault currents. Its trip type is classified as 'B', suitable for various applications including EV chargers."

I looked at the data sheet for that, and although it continuously references "type B" in the description, the data sheet says otherwise. It's a B curve, type A RCBO.

If the chargepoint being installed has dc leakage protection, then a standard type A rcd is sufficient.

Chargepoints in Ireland do not require an additional earth rod. Your house must have one, however.

If granny charging you typically use an ordinary household outlet, ideally a waterproof outdoor box. If fitting a special circuit to the fuse board for this, then you would not want a 40amp breaker unless the cabling was rated at 40 amps.

For a commando you would have a 32 amp load. As suggested ideally use one with an inbuilt isolation switch from a good brand. Ensure house does NOT have instant shower like triton, heat pump and check tails between ESB meter and fuse board, but it you have to ask these questions I would not go with messing with breakers in the fuse board. It's difficult to safely isolate a fuse board and even with every breaker off some of the fuse board will still be live. Any badly made connection will eventually overheat and may burn down the house. My electrician still managed to badly make a connection...

Thanks, unfortunately the house (built in 1996) does not have an inspectable earth rod. I guess I will ask them to add an earth rod first, and to earth dumb socket/charger as well. Fingers crossed they put in the correct (type A rcd etc) as suggested above, for a simple enough system.

Looking for any pointers for getting a charger installed. Have put a deposit on a 2nd hand VW.

Don't want it beside the meter as that's too far from where it'll be parked.

I've been told to get a tethered one, but I'm not sure why!

One EV and will probably get solar panels in next couple of years.

If recommendations arent allowed on the thread, I'd appreciate a pm....based in the midlands.

    Thanks

Tethered is way more convenient as it includes a permanent cable to plug into your car. Non tethered is neater looking but you need to take the cable out of your car every time you want to charge. As for installers, Fokearn seem to get recommended here a bit recently but I haven’t used them personally.

I got that charger installed off Forkearn, the charger install on the exterior was a superb job 10/10. The few bits they did inside the house around the fuse box were absolutely terrible! Looked like Stevie wonder with a hangover did it 2/10

That would be the more worrying bit, any chance of a few pics?

The 2 lads were lovely fellas and obviously very good at the important stuff like wiring but the finishing touches were a let down unfortunately. Luckily we are decorating the house now so we will get it all tidied up. The charger itself is an excellent job and have absolutely zero issues with it or the install.

Not a huge deal I suppose but it is very shoddy finishing, I couldn't see them leaving my place like that without getting an earful from the missus 🫣

Yeah they are only small silly things, would have been just as easy to do it right and leave a very happy customer instead of a grump leaving negative reviews online!

they are sparks. Wouldn’t expect anything less. I’d nearly tell them to leave it and I’d sort it properly myself.

But that’s the bad points of having to run cables along the surface instead of being buried.

Obviously the “apprentice” did the inside.

I've bought a Opel e combo for the business, a lot less range than I was expecting btw. Anyone any idea if it would charge fully overnight using a granny charger?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,139 ✭✭✭Mr Q

It won't. My car would take about 30 hours I think on a granny charger to go from 0% to 100%

Is yours 50kWh? Minimum a full day I would say

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,244 ✭✭✭MBSnr

They did mine and in fairness an overall good job. The inside was fine but he had an issue drilling through to the outside - first hole came out in the soffit (but not through the fascia). A bit of measuring beforehand would have helped perhaps.....? Luckily the hole was inside through the back of the consumer unit, so not visible and no damage seemingly done. The 2nd hole was in the right place but I think he was now rushing to catch up, pressing too hard and 'blew' off a large part of the render outside around the hole, which I had to fill and paint afterwards. I guess these things happen.

I got the tethered as didn't want to drag the cable from the car each time. I see the BG SyncEV with Fokearn is now 1049 Euro, dropped 50 Euro just after I got it…

Who charges from 0% at home though?

You won’t be far off 0% most evenings if you’re using a van for work with a small HV battery.

These guys did a very tidy job installing a tethered SyncEV in my house. They had to run power from the fuse box in the hallway out and around to the side of the house.

Lifted some cobblestone outside to hide the cable run etc.

I did ask them to make sure it was tidy, as I've no interest redoing a job I've paid someone to do. I think it's important to set expectations, if I'd said nothing they could have done a butcher job.

Under €900 after grant which is reasonable enough.
