The migration to Vanilla took a long time, and Boards has less resources now. They're stuck, unless there's significant investment from the owners (current or new)

As a distraction from the main event I thought I'd throw this one out there

Re thanking posts - I have inadvertently hit the thanks button on my own posts a few times - I'd say everyone has at some stage and you get the little notification telling you, you can't thank your own posts - I have noticed a couple of mods have thanked their own posts (by accident I'm sure) but the thanks register on the post - cue twilight zone music

I have no idea anymore when I click into a thread if I'll be brought to the top of the last page, the last post of the last page or some random position on the last page of a thread.

I get the feeling the only folk left around here are the ones that are here out of habit and nostalgia, there's no way new users would continue using a dysfunctional website.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,378 ✭✭✭RobertFoster

I find I'm avoiding threads that have issues until there's at least a few new posts to look at. Having to first click through 2 or 3 blank pages then scroll through sometimes dozens of already read posts looking for the new one is a chore.

Another recent-ish change that's annoying me is how links are handled. They seem to have gone from being auto parsed (large), to 3 options (large, small, inline), to just plain text.

Definitely visiting on autopilot out of habit, sticking around for the remaining posters rather than the platform at this stage.

@DrZeuss I'm definitely here out of nostalgia and old enough to remember the gaming forum it sprung forth from! Even when I didn't play 'quake'.

The links are only plain text because people aren't adding anything after them to make the embed parsing happen. Even just a space or newline makes the embed process.

That's not quite right: iin a lot of threads, if you do that you get an error, the only option is to leave the thread as it is and abandon ship.

One issue with links is that lots of people try to link to twitter. But since it became x, if you copy the link it won't work.

Pro-tip: just change the x.com to twitter.com and leave the rest alone and it'll embed fine.

Shared before but I use the embed links option.

Some links like above never parse. When I see that happening I delete the link and post it like below.

Digital wallets for social media age verification

But that maybe a problem with the external site not providing a parsable link?

I still visit and it's mostly habitual as you say. That said, I'm visiting less and less as half the threads I follow are struck with the page issue and I'm just getting less and less bothered with trying to find new posts. I've noticed now the traffic in some threads is significantly down and propped up by the same handful of posters.

It feels like things are at a cliff edge.

Is that a Vanilla thing or an X thing?

Why does Twitter unfurl but not X.

Do Vanilla need to add X to list of 'unfurl' supported sites?

Definitely an X thing. The sites chosen and recommended URL to embed is the twitter URL.

If they change to the 'X' URL, a lot of websites sharing old tweets would no longer work.

I don't think they want to support both methods.

X links not working while Twitter links do work is most definitely a Vanilla/Boards issue.

When you paste a link, the Boards frontend sends the URL to https://www.boards.ie/api/v2/media/scrape. The Boards back-end then goes off and retrieves the details from the URL, and returns them to the front-end, which formats them into the 'unfurled' link that you see. For most sites, the backend can just use a generic workflow, grabbing the link details easily.

However, many popular sites (including Twitter/X), don't allow third-parties to simply scrape their site. You have to instead call their APIs. So when Boards' back-end sees a link containing twitter.com, it doesn't use the generic workflow to build the unfurled link. It instead constructs the details by calling the Twitter APIs [1].

But when you pass an X link to Boards' back-end, it doesn't recognise that this is a "special" link - it just uses the generic workflow to attempt to get the details. And X/Twitter doesn't allow that, so it fails.

Depending on exactly how the Boards' back-end bit is done, it's either Boards, Vanilla, or a plug-in developer that needs to make the change, but it's definitely not X.

[1] Actually, the backend just says "hey this is a Twitter link" and lets the front-end make the API calls, but that's not really relevant

@28064212 X links not working while Twitter links do work is most definitely a Vanilla/Boards issue. !?

Is it though, has X provided an update api for boards and other forums to use yet, to utilize the X url?

    https://developer.x.com/en/docs/x-for-websites

    This url doesn't resolve: - https://publish.twitter.com/oembed

Workaround for Boards.ie would be to used the censored words function to change "x.com" to "twitter.com"

    Tip from here:- https://support.proboards.com/thread/674748/allow-urls-work-same-twitter

Yes, X have provided the API needed. It's the exact same as the twitter one.

https://publish.twitter.com/oembed is not supposed to return anything. You need to provide parameters: https://publish.twitter.com/oembed?url=https%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2Ftwiterdev

With the changes to page numbering it has the side effect of google search links not pointing to the correct pages of a thread and responding with a page not found. There is now only 212 pages on the below link provided by google.

As foreseen (actually I got my maths slightly wrong, it broke at #4092).

It'll "fix" again at #4102, and "break" again at #4142. The underlying issue hasn't been addressed

A resurfaced 'The Tommy Tiernan Show Thread - Mod warning, see OP' because of show starting back on Saturday has the page bug as well. New thread created which can be merged back when Blank Pages bug is fixed.

There is no point hoping new posts would resolve the issue because I have notice new pages get created and the number of pages in a thread just increases.

Can I suggest every thread reported with the blank page issue be closed and reopened as a new thread. Even this one has a one page blank. Given it's taken a ridiculous amount of time to fix the issue, you might possibly retain users with a bit of maintenance. Not unlike what had to be done in old boards funny enough when the mega threads got large. Yah for upgrades !

For (previously) busy threads affected by this, can't the mods lock them and open a new one? Temporary fix…

    Hi all,

Could I ask any users who have spotted threads facing the pagination error, (hidden or "missing" content) to see if it threads are loading as they should?

    Thanks,

    Mike.

Rich Text Editor. To edit a paragraph's style, hit tab to get to the paragraph menu. From there you will be able to pick one style. Nothing defaults to paragraph. An inline formatting menu will show up when you select text. Hit tab to get into that menu. Some elements, such as rich link embeds, images, loading indicators, and error messages may get inserted into the editor. You may navigate to these using the arrow keys inside of the editor and delete them with the delete or backspace key.
