Sky Mobile, coming to Ireland

I’m looking for a bit of advice here if possible as two calls to sky failed to resolve things.

I switched from Three to sky and like many have had problems updating the mobile network settings. Just wondering if anyone else had difficulty accessing 4g/5g and if there is a workaround you used to fix this. My download and upload speeds are 11 and 21 mbps so pretty terrible.

To explain what I think is wrong, I’m using a iPhone and when I access Setting/ Mobile data options/ voice and data/ my options are limited to 2g, 3G and LTE. Also on the Mobile Service Screen (just under the personal hotspot row) the heading is TELE2 where it used to read 3 IRELAND which seems wrong.

As this is my first time porting my number I’m hoping the glitch is down to a stupid misstep on my part….

    Any advice appreciated.

LTE is 4G, for some reason Sky SIMs show LTE instead of 4G.

Thanks. I can’t understand why the two sky agents couldn’t tell me that!

I’ll have to look further into the slow speeds. The coverage checker didn’t seem too bad for my address but at least I know I get 4g.

Also the Tele2 thing seems to be related to the way Sky handle roaming. Rather than negotiate roaming deals in every country, it seems they partnered with Tele2 to use their roaming agreements. There's a switch in the SIM applications that sets the roaming mode as "Partner network" after which, the SIM is detected as if it were a Tele2 SIM (and changes the APN settings to the Tele2 Sweden ones). If the "Partner network" option has ever been selected (or presumably if you have roamed at any stage), from then on, the iPhone will show the SIM name as Tele2.

I'm having second thoughts about staying with Sky, the roaming setup looks very janky and the Wi-Fi calling seems to drop more frequently. I have two eSIMs in my phone (one Sky and one Vodafone) and often see the Sky Wi-Fi calling offline, while Vodafone's is still on. If it weren't for the 12 month contract I'd be more likely to give it time but I'm not feeling comfortable with committing to the 12 months.

I did get a 2FA issue yesterday when trying to sign up for something with a spam bucket account I keep on GMail. Google sending SMS codes and took probably 15 attempts to get through. Verifications via apps are working fine though

Thanks again, that’s so helpful and makes sense in my case.
I totally agree on the 12 month commitment. I’ll definitely have to weigh up if sky mobile is worth it in the next week or so that I can still back out.

Speaking of which, if I do decide to cancel within the 14 days, do I need to give them notice before porting out?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,022 ✭✭✭✭Mimikyu

No you can just port straight out and they’ll close the account from that day. Don’t have to contact Sky at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 888 ✭✭✭Cork981

No, porting out your number should close the account. You'll get billed the full €15 but then get a credit for the days you didn't use the next month.

I actually couldn't port out as I couldn't receive the SMS with the verification code. It was a secondary work number that I ported in so was ok with losing it after spending hours on phone doing basic troubleshooting, restarting my phone etc. I made the call to support over sky mobile wifi calling and the called even dropped twice while talking to them.

Cheers, I decided to port out for peace of mind. I didn't want to run the risk of having continued issues after the cooling off expired and having to endure them for the year. I'll either stay on Vodafone or take a risk on GoMo with just Wi-Fi calling in the house.

@Glaceon what phone are you using? It seems like some folks have Wifi Calling working, and others don't have that option, so I'm trying to get an understanding of which phones are white-listed. Is it an iPhone?

It's fine outdoors, but if you had poor indoor coverage, and were previously using Wifi-Calling, be careful. Sky seem to limit Wifi calling to certain phones only.

iPhone 13. It did connect but would drop quite regularly. I definitely wouldn’t have wanted to rely on it. There’s times that it would only reconnect if I put the phone in aeroplane mode and turned the Wi-Fi on. The Vodafone coverage is mostly good in the front of my house but it’s weaker at the back, so Wi-Fi calling is something I’d like to have.

saw one on Discovery with Roy Keane fronting it

I've a OnePlus 12R and no WiFi calling or VoLTE where I did on Eir. I think somebody else with a OnePlus previously in the thread is in the same boat, so I think the hypothethsis of them only being available on select handsets is correct. They may expand it, they may not. I might contact them to see what they say. It's not a deal breaker for me, as I don't use the phone as a phone on a day to day basis

I got an email yesterday as I'm signed up to their VIP email list.

This typically means they use a proprietary Wi-Fi and VoLTE calling solution. Telstra in Australia has the same problem.

    esim available on website again.

I'm absolutely livid now and I'm not sure who is at fault.

I requested a port to Vodafone yesterday. My Sky SIM died at 8am but I heard nothing from Vodafone regarding the new account. I couldn't even get anyone on 1907 so I called into a Vodafone store. They said the number isn't with them and to check Sky. I called Sky and they say the account is still active and Vodafone need to initiate the port again. So I called Vodafone with a different number and they're now saying that there's an issue with Sky and it'll take up to 72 working hours to resolve! So I won't have any service until Wednesday or Thursday at this rate, which would put me past the 14 day cooling off period!

Edit: I called Vodafone back and said to cancel the port. They basically begged me to give them until Monday. So it sounds like it's their fault.

Oh I'm glad I read this. I was going to Port back out to Vodafone to see the difference between them and Sky, and then port back into Sky - I'm glad I didn't. Or maybe its not affecting everyone Porting from Sky to Vodafone?

I'd love to see the take up figures for this and the number porting back out.

    @EryykTV Whats proprietary wifi calling?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,433 ✭✭✭✭Hurrache

Yeah, that was myself, I gave them a call about it at the time and it's on their to do list. I never really used it when I was with Eir anyway, only when it was switched on by default.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 683 ✭✭✭pfftdetail

Unlike 2G/3G/4G/5G where it's standardised and everyone has to follow the same specs, Wi-Fi and VoLTE have no set standard and every carrier can have it's own implementation of the service. Therefore Telstra in Australia and Sky Mobile in Ireland seemingly only approve it for certain devices.

Feel free to watch this video for more interest of how shutting down 2G and 3G networks is actually really bad since forcing everyone to use VoLTE or Wi-Fi calling is bad as if you don't have an approved device you are SOOL.

I switched to Sky 15 days ago and I have been reading this post with interest. My internet hasn’t been as good as it would be with Vodafone from what I can tell. I’m out of the cooling off period now though so hopefully things improve. I’ve not had any major issues so far luckily. Still, I’m only paying Sky €15 a month versus nearly €70 to Vodafone previously

The Vodafone PAYG everything unlimited plan is 30 FYI.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,939 ✭✭✭✭TheDriver

Thanks. If that's the case, another black mark against sky. Sadly no agent will be able to tell you any of this from their answer sheet.

My unactivated sim is getting closer to the bin.

Today in reddit I read 'Sky are a nightmare to deal with. 12 month minimum contract and if you leave early you have to pay the full amount until the contract ends. They also have in their TOS that if you order a sim and don't activate it that the billing will start automatically anyway.'

    True?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,939 ✭✭✭✭TheDriver

Not true re activation. I asked directly.

EDIT- just checked mysky and it says billing will start automatically if sim is not activated within 14 days of delivery. I better ring them. And totally against what the agent told me on the phone

Full terms and conditions below. You will have to pay termination charges if you end your contract early, except in certain cases, such as Sky increasing the service price.

According to the terms and conditions, bulling starts once you activate your SIM card.

I have been keeping an eye on a Samsung A55 on a 36 month contract, E30 per month up until now, but they are not selling it for E32 per month. That is an increase of E72 over the life of the contract!! So they have increased their prices already
