I have to confess I'm struggling to follow the group stages this year. I have no idea who is playing who other than on the night. Makes it hard to know if a game is significant or not.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

9 games on and 5 of them were won by a margin of 4+ goals, not the most riveting night of football.

With group stages some games between neutrals were interesting (even the hammerings) because you could see the effect they had on their group.

Now I couldn't be arssed checking any result except my team because the rest have no context for me.

its the same as the GAA format. Just a rake more games of very little consequence with some thrashings thrown in but it doesnt really mean anything until the knockouts.

I prefer it, playing 8 teams once instead of 3 teams twice is much better and gives a fairer reflection on a teams ability as opposed to getting a lucky/tough draw. Never understood why you played teams home and away if it wasn't knockout, does anybody really need to see Bayern vs Dinamo Zagreb again?

The old format just limited who you can play too much for me, Arsenal haven't played Real Madrid since the 2006 final despite both teams being in the same comp almost every year since.

It also gives the new/lowly teams a much better chance of progressing as they also get a couple of games against minnows as opposed to being just cannon fodder for the big teams.

    ^^^^^

all this plus the excitement for rounds 7 and 8, when making the top 24 will still be an option for a fair few teams.

Should make for some great games then, plus the drama of that final table, on the last day, where each goal sees teams moving into and out of qualification by the minute (hopefully!)

By then you will also know what teams to look out for in relation to your own which will make "neutral games" more exciting. That is of course for the teams who are around that 24th place.

I don't mind the new format but how can it both:

"Give a fairer reflection on a teams ability"

    and also

"Give the new/lowly teams a much better chance of progressing"

    Surely it can't be both?

Having 18 games kick off at the same time, in the same competition, will be a bit mad too!

Because each team has to face two opponents from each pool now, previously the top teams didn't have any pool 1 opponents and the pool 4 teams didn't have any other matches against pool 4 teams giving massive advantages to big teams and hampering the smaller teams. This way is fairer all around.

It also means that new teams having their first UCL campaign aren't hindered for their lack of UEFA points garnered from previous seasons, previously a team like Brest (3rd in French league last year) would get thrown into pot 4 with a difficult draw and very little chance of progression which is a terrible reward for having your best ever season, see Newcastle last year.

I actually think the Europa League is far more interesting now that the CL rejects can't parachute into it. If anything that's what was watering it down.

Atalanta just beat Shaktar Donetsk 3-0, where they could have won by more. Are teams aware that in a 36 team league GD could be vital? Amazed they didn't do what Dortmund did last night.

    and villa take the lead.

disallowed, unsure why. all decisions going bayern's way so far.

    Great result for Villa....fair play.

Worrying times for Bayern and Madrid. Lose another four games and they might not make the next round.

Simon Harris is monitoring the situation...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,799 ✭✭✭jacool

The OPTA prediction machine, that did some 10000 combinations, didn't have either losing any games!

Just looking at the fixtures and Dortmond are definitely topping the league stage. They have Real Madrid who in all honesty, don't look amazing at the back. Everything else is fairly easy.

Anyone else find the first two round to be a bit meh? Hopefully it picks up. The knockouts will obviously take care of themselves.

Is there too many teams? Would a reduced competition for the Champions League/Europa League be better?
