The way Arsenal are defending they look like they could be real contenders. Real throw back to George Graham's Arsenal. They look really comfortable playing within themselves.

You are right though Atalanta have been impressive as well, plus their fans.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Celtic have some big games coming up, but expect them to do well. Against the likes of Feyenoord and Atlei in recent years, attacked and were often the better team. It could be argued naive, and got picked off, but they haven't got the rub of the green in recent years either.

Wtih a bit of luck, and their attitude of having a go, I wouldn't be surprised if they got to the knock-out rounds. They're definitely due a bit of luck.

Europe has been boring for 20 years in Ireland in a way, without a Celtic run deep into Europe. I remember the euphoria here when they went on a run to the UEFA Cup final. Or Nakamura scoring that free kick against United, a pub full of lads in United jerseys up celebrating. When push comes to shove, as much it's popular to deride Celtic in Ireland these days, if the ball gets rolling and they go deep into Europe, Irish people will row in behind them.

Irish Liverpool and United fans, as much as they'd deny it now, if they met Celtic in a Champions League semi-final for example, and as the game wore on, would row in behind Celtic by the end. Seen it with my own eyes when Nakamura scored that free v United, the pub full of lads in United jerseys exploded. Absolute mania when Celtic beat United, from lads in United jerseys. It's the natural pull and connection with Celtic that we have as a nation, as much as we don't realise it's there anymore

It's been a long time since Ireland and Irish football has had that to get behind on a European stage, would be great to see Celtic have a go again and get somewhere.

That's not entirely true. There is a sweet spot with every tournament. The Euros started out with 4 teams and then 8 but 16 was the sweet spot. The World Cup was similar. 32 was probably the sweet spot there (if only because the world outside UEFA and CONMEBOL was massively under-represented when it was 24 teams).

I'm not sure when the Champions League was at the right number or the right makeup of teams from each country. It has changed a lot in both over the years but I can't recall them ever getting the mix perfect.

    🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

You really do come out with some codswallop!!

If Liverpool play Celtic I absolutely hope we batter Celtic by double digits!!

No, not everyone in this country is in to that republican childishness.

Couldn't care less about the fate of Celtic and the large chunk of RA head fans over here.

Didn't think one post could contain so much nonsense- alot of your posts have a real tendency to do that. I sometimes wonder are you trying to be particularly obtuse on purpose or do you actually believe what you say.

Hard to fathom that it could be the latter when you "speak' for All Liverpool and United fans.

Your posts can be as comical as they are delusional.

Just putting this in here now, so we will all know why certain teams who are tied in the table are ordered in a certain way, and one finishes 24th and the other 25th! This is how the positions, for ties, will be resolved, in order

    a. Superior goal difference in the league phase

    b. Higher number of goals scored in the league phase

    c. Higher number of away goals scored in the league phase

    d. Higher number of wins in the league phase

    e. Higher number of away wins in the league phase

    f. Higher number of points obtained collectively by league phase opponents

    g. Superior collective goal difference of league phase opponents

    h. Higher number of goals scored collectively by league phase opponents

    i. Lower disciplinary points total based only on yellow and red cards received by players and team officials in all league phase matches (red card = 3 points, yellow card = 1 point, expulsion for two yellow cards in one match = 3 points)

    j. Higher club coefficient

I saw Hansi Flick getting a yellow yesterday, and also Casado, when the penalty was awarded and then cancelled by VAR. They were two of Barcelona's 4 bookings. Would be interesting if that cost them later on.

tbh I think your perspective on how non-Celtic-specific Irish fans feel about Celtic is about 20 years out of date.

You’ve made this Celtic point before and been thoroughly and roundly disagreed with. Those days are well gone.

I don't like Celtic at all and the manufactured "Irish connection" all a bit touristy Oirish I feel. Paddywackery type stuff. All very "forced". I never brought into it. Feel no connection to them, they are just another British side as far as I am concerned. And a weak one at that. Europa League more their level.

There are more Japanese lads playing for Celtic than Irish for example. They are a weak side in European terms all huff and puff. Make a lot of noise at home, might win the odd game at home, if lucky. Normally awful away. Very poor technically normally.

As for Celtic's win OK decent win, but let's be honest on the European stage Slovan Bratislava are no great shakes on the European stage, probably one of the weakest in the competition along with Celtic.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Mod: back to discussing the Champions League please. Nobody needs to justify the clubs they like and talking about clubs you don't like is likely to see you get a warning.

Christ that's a very different PSG front 3 than we've gotten used to seeing!

Bradley Barcola, Lee Kang-in, Desire Doue.

No Fabian Ruiz in midfield either.

Disgraceful from Rodgers this evening, imagine trying to go toe to toe with last years finalists

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,180 ✭✭✭DellyBelly

This is the problem with this league format. There are teams in it that are nowhere the level...Champions league only gets interesting in the knockout stages...have to feel for Celtic tonight...

Celtic gotta play horses for course here, set up like they’re playing Kilmarnock here ffs

Arteta constantly outside his technical area absolutely does my nut in. He stepped on the pitch there a few secs ago. Would love to see him get a few red cards for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,489 ✭✭✭✭A Dub in Glasgo

This has happened in European competitions over the last 7or 8 years under Rodgers and Ange… they seemed to think we could out score quality opposition

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,384 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Standard fare in the CL tonight, very much like the old group games.

Big teams winning easily. Hardly going to grab the fans attention.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,336 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

I'm not sure this league format makes any difference in that respect - there have been absolute hammerings of 4th seeds in every group year in year out. Sure the teams that got battered tonight are mostly CL group stage regulars.

It's just an exercise in novelty - and most of all to milk a few extra games - rather than actually changing things for either better or worse. It's potentially interesting that more good teams play each other, but the reality is that they're not taking these big-clash ties anywhere near as seriously as they would an actual knockout fixture, since they know there'll be plenty of cannon fodder teams to dispatch later. For instance, if this was PSG against Arsenal in a knock out tie, there's no way that Dembele isn't included in the squad.

As you say, the CL only really gets interesting in the knockouts - so it's all the same really.

Bit of a weird one on CBS at the moment - Peter Schmeichel doing post-match interviews with Dortmund players who've just put 7 past his son 😅

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,164 ✭✭✭jacool

Peter telling them he used to stop when he'd given him "six of the best".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,712 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

Was there as many big scoreline though, 7,8 and 9 goals? Seems like it's more watered down, but then again, the plan is probably a Super League 1 and Super League 2 long term. Leaves the Europa really watered down nowadays though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,969 ✭✭✭✭klose

I’ll give it a season to see what’s it like but it nots going to “shake it up” if that was the plan which I doubt it was, at the end of the day it’s more games and games=money. But it’s more money for the “smaller” teams too and an extra home game for teams that don’t always get it into it and it’s games against bigger opposition which I’m sure their fans are happy with till they eventually get pasted.

Bayern Munich usually run up high scoring games at some point in the tournament, scoring 5,6,7 goals. They year they won it, they beat Spurs 7-2, Barca 8-2 and Red Star 6-0. Since then, they've clocked up a 6-2, 7-1 and a few wins scoring 5 aswell.

Man City, Real Madrid, Liverpool have often clocked up a few 5,6 or 7 goal wins too. Liverpool won 7-0 twice in the same group stage one year, against different teams.

  • Moderators, Regional East Moderators Posts: 23,233 Mod ✭✭✭✭GLaDOS

I have to confess I'm struggling to follow the group stages this year. I have no idea who is playing who other than on the night. Makes it hard to know if a game is significant or not.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,058 ✭✭✭✭Osmosis Jones

9 games on and 5 of them were won by a margin of 4+ goals, not the most riveting night of football.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,673 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

With group stages some games between neutrals were interesting (even the hammerings) because you could see the effect they had on their group.

Now I couldn't be arssed checking any result except my team because the rest have no context for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,395 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

its the same as the GAA format. Just a rake more games of very little consequence with some thrashings thrown in but it doesnt really mean anything until the knockouts.

I prefer it, playing 8 teams once instead of 3 teams twice is much better and gives a fairer reflection on a teams ability as opposed to getting a lucky/tough draw. Never understood why you played teams home and away if it wasn't knockout, does anybody really need to see Bayern vs Dinamo Zagreb again?

The old format just limited who you can play too much for me, Arsenal haven't played Real Madrid since the 2006 final despite both teams being in the same comp almost every year since.

It also gives the new/lowly teams a much better chance of progressing as they also get a couple of games against minnows as opposed to being just cannon fodder for the big teams.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,164 ✭✭✭jacool

    ^^^^^

all this plus the excitement for rounds 7 and 8, when making the top 24 will still be an option for a fair few teams.

Should make for some great games then, plus the drama of that final table, on the last day, where each goal sees teams moving into and out of qualification by the minute (hopefully!)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,673 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

By then you will also know what teams to look out for in relation to your own which will make "neutral games" more exciting. That is of course for the teams who are around that 24th place.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,058 ✭✭✭✭Osmosis Jones

I don't mind the new format but how can it both:

"Give a fairer reflection on a teams ability"

    and also

"Give the new/lowly teams a much better chance of progressing"

    Surely it can't be both?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,337 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

Having 18 games kick off at the same time, in the same competition, will be a bit mad too!

  • Registered Users Posts: 719 ✭✭✭al87987

Because each team has to face two opponents from each pool now, previously the top teams didn't have any pool 1 opponents and the pool 4 teams didn't have any other matches against pool 4 teams giving massive advantages to big teams and hampering the smaller teams. This way is fairer all around.

It also means that new teams having their first UCL campaign aren't hindered for their lack of UEFA points garnered from previous seasons, previously a team like Brest (3rd in French league last year) would get thrown into pot 4 with a difficult draw and very little chance of progression which is a terrible reward for having your best ever season, see Newcastle last year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,953 ✭✭✭Deeper Blue

I actually think the Europa League is far more interesting now that the CL rejects can't parachute into it. If anything that's what was watering it down.

Atalanta just beat Shaktar Donetsk 3-0, where they could have won by more. Are teams aware that in a 36 team league GD could be vital? Amazed they didn't do what Dortmund did last night.
