You can see it's the same for ICE drivers on this thread. I know my own ICE has gone up.

People really need to shop around. Our 520d was renewed for €13 less than last year, this week. Axa.

Nothing much of a saving to talk about out, but lower none the less.

If insurance goes the way the uk went a while back, many a goosed though!

If I put my tin foil hat on for a minute, it’s another measure to force people out of cars 😳

Price walking is still very much a thing, especially with many insurers locking you in by offering discounts for multiple policies in the same household

Agree with shopping around, but you also need to consider the "loyalty" discounts you can lose

Incidentally I find the term loyalty discount amusing since they're acknowledging that their customers loyalty is for sale 😂

mine is down a tenner from 395 to 385 on the model 3 and similar on the leaf. Not going up.

Realistically the cost of insurance is down to the cost of repair/replacement and the probability of something going wrong, nothing else

EVs may have justified a premium in the past since they're more expensive, however they're quite close to ICE nowadays so that doesn't make much sense

There's probably some argument that they're harder to repair due to difficulties sourcing parts. In the case of Tesla, they've been difficult to repair in the past with the percentage of aluminium in the frames (bodywork shops need different equipment for aluminium than steel) so that could feed into repair cost

However insurers seem to be quick to write off vehicles rather than repair them so I'm not sure the repair costs would be a significant factor either

It's likely a combination of general price increase, internet BS and good old fashioned price gouging

These been the same problem with ICE repairs. Cost of repair going up. Shortage of parts and technicians.

At the risk of going OT I'd say it's a problem across all consumer goods nowadays

Pretty sure car manufacturers only do repairs because they know they couldn't get away not doing them

After all, if you sell a car and then the buyer crashes it and has to get a new one, then that's two sales for the effort of one

Agree. I have 2 EV’s with Allianz because of their multi car discount and home insurance. Paying €346 on a M3P and under €500 on a 530e. Great policy with comp on other cars, business use etc

My brother just swapped from an X5 40d to a BMW M3 with chill and his policy dropped from €800 to €720.

No idea how insurance companies come up with their figures!

Naa, the cost of insurance is claims and dramatically so, a €2k fender bender won't even be looked at but drivers and passengers (in both cars) can be 20/30 times that in claims for injuries. I worked in car reinsurance for a few years, seem claims over €100k day after day due to injuries

Ability, and/or,desirability to thieves is another factor considered by insurance companies.

Algorithms. I do similar for loss prevention and budgeting/pricing (not in insurance space though).

Their pricing mechanism will look at the car type and subtype (in conjunction with other factors like age, location, stated KM, penalty points etc) and give a price for that combination, based on past losses and predicted future losses. Large part of the number will be past claims (so a claim factor - simple binary will there be a claim YN) and then a loss given claim factor (ie IF there's a claim, how much will it cost). It's actually the case that some fast/interesting cars can be cheap to insure if replacement parts are easy and cheap to come by (relative to value of car) and there are not many historical accidents for the driver cohort and that car cohort. Aston Martins are often quite cheap relative to their competitors, for instance, as their drivers are usually affluent older men who take care of their cars and don't crash them.

One would wonder if the change in EVs is in part due to the price reduction, so it's gone from an expensive toy (like the original S and X) for well off older men, to a more widespread affordable product for families. And as such, the rate of accidents and claims increased, and the cost of repair still remains super high compared to an equivalent ICE

The injury claims are vastly inflated in Ireland. The insurance companies don't seem to want to tackle it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,331 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

I doubt there is a change. Just insurance companies taking advantage of the hype. Also manufacturers being stupid about it. Like them writing off vehicles instead of repairing them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 19,650 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

If there is a change. Others have claimed finding EV insurance is difficult and or gone up in price. I have 3 EVs and have not found the prices to go up. Actually renewed with all 3 insurers (all liberty/redclick) as the price was better than others.

Same thing on the ICE forums.

None of this is new. I can remember being trying to get put on as named driver and being quoted as uninsurable, 2000, 700 and free all by the same company in the same day.

    It's nonsense.

Car is too old, too new, it's an import (we don't make cars) it's a 1.9 (with 90bhp), it's your age, it's your occupation, it's an EV, it's a diesel. The list is endless.

UK sales of EV's up 25% in the month of September versus September 2023. Driven by discounts and fleet purchases.

SMMT note discounts were influenced by upcoming fines the UK government will levy on manufacturers for not hitting EV targets.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,331 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

UK is utterly distorted by fleet sales.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,140 ✭✭✭Exiled Rebel

Why is that not the case here? Serious question.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,606 ✭✭✭denismc

I think they have more favorable BIK rates, especially for EVs. I think it's 2% for EVs in the UK.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 6,771 ✭✭✭Buddy Bubs

It's zero BIK on an EV up to 45k here

Anything more expensive is only BIK on the amount over 45k

Problem is, there's no commitment to make this semi permanent at least, just until end of 2025 for now

But currently I have a cupra born BIK free

And I bought it personally to get the grant, then sold it to my company a few months later who then financed it and repaid me

Can't get any cheaper than that

Don't think I even did anything dodgy, entitled to do all that.

    Hello

Just wondering if there is any electric Vehicle charging around the general Ardkeen area of Waterford city?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 19,650 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

The only problem I can see is the company wouldnt qualify for the ACCA scheme in that instance, as the company would have to buy the car new.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 19,650 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

So my model 3 was in a major shunt at the weekend and is likely written off. Other side has accepted liability and it's at the engineer for assessment to confirm write off. I posted in the tesla owners group FB but essentially I'm super thankful to Tesla for keeping me and my family safe.

Assuming the car is written off, I'm now looking for the replacement. Certainly won't be a TM3 again, after getting hammered on the depreciation. I'm looking at used model X but there's slim pickings here and I'm working out the cost of importing.

This is the pick of my list so far.

Hope all okay (are by the sounds of things), would you really be worried about M3 depreciation, that's happened now, a good 221/222 RWD should be well under €30k

Nope! It amazes me that one of the most populated areas of the city has no public chargers - including the hospital and the largest Tesco in the South-East. There are at least three other smaller Tescos that have the old ESB 22kw chargers. (Ballybeg, Tramore and Poleberry.)

ACA, accelerated capital allowance? No, we didnt claim that, just depreciating the car over 4 years in line with all our vehicles.

It's already happened, yes, but I'm not willing or interested in having the same car again. I usually change every 12 months or so anyway so it was overdue. The 3 was only supposed to be temporary until my X reservation came in. But that's a long story

Fair. Isnt it supposed to be 8 years at 12.5% each year for asset purchase? Obviously consult an accountant etc as I'm not one!
