Great article by Robert Reich explaining just why Trump is doing what he’s doing -I totally agree as I’ve previously mentioned that MAGA’s strategy of monopolising the media airwaves daily with rubbish helps to drown out Harris and gives her less air time and listening space with voters- something some posters here found hard to agree with.

Extraordinarily, this could be down to “the devil you know” - and that would certainly be a very bad reflection of America in general - but hey, right now it could be the reality - Harris needs to work hard over the next few weeks to look and sound presidential and capable - it’s amazing how close this is but we are where we are

Whatever about last night's debate (apparently close to a draw according to polls), the two debates show that of the 4 main characters in this drama (Harris, Trump, Vance and Walz), one stands out as uniquely dreadful and unhinged. He makes the other three look good.

    Well done, Donnie!

I'd argue two of the four stand out as unhinged and uniquely dreadful. (I know you can't have 2 things that are unique but anyhoo)

Heard JD was excellent last night, I'd say alot on here are a little upset. Great pick from the Donald.

I hope there is a not inconsiderable number of conservative women keeping their mouths shut for an easy life, but who will vote blue in the booths because they don't want their daughters offered up on the altar of Project 2025, quite possibly losing their right to vote, to divorce abusive partners, to have their lives saved if a pregnancy turns dangerous, and not to be subjected to pregnancy tests/exams if they want to leave a State with strict abortion bans, as posited by Vance.

It may not be as close as it seems.

Maybe you should watch it and form your own opinions and share them with us? Rather than assuming stuff and cheaply attempting to wind people up?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,611 ✭✭✭✭LambshankRedemption

I'm watching it now. Neither are excellent, so I don't know who told you that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,556 ✭✭✭eightieschewbaccy

Everything I've heard is neither will move the dial that much. So it boils down to Trump being absolutely shite in his debate if you're considering it from debate performance. 😂

Sure Trump told us a while back the vice president can’t really do much anyway so it’s pretty irrelevant right?

The VP can't do much unless the President keels over one day with a massive heart attack, which when you are 78 with the diet of a teenager, is not beyond the realm of possibility.

Yeah, but you wouldn't be saying that if Vance lost

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 531 ✭✭✭Dingaan

I have heard the same. I will watch it later when I get a chance. I suspect Walz's 'I'm just dumb' routine may not be what the American electorate wants in a VP.

A somewhat muted response from the pro-MAGA crowd today. Not bad news for MAGA that Vance can actually string together a sentence in a debate setting, but this is still the guy who can’t seem to organise a simple photo-op at any given eatery, is a flip-flopper on Trump himself, and is more known for an unverified internet rumor than anything else (ironically enough for a MAGA canditate).

The two takeaways don’t seem to serve Trump’s ticket all that well.

    • Vance complains that essentially he’s not been allowed to lie unchallenged.
    • That he hasn’t the scruples or backbone to admit that Trump lost 2020.

So, «lies and danger to democracy» remain the theme of Donnie’s ticket. Thank you Vance for reminding everyone what your team are all about.

He did a hell of a lot better than I would have given him credit for that’s for sure.

Not a great night for the Dems - they needed a much more positive and definitive win outcome -while Walz didn’t do much wrong, I felt he came across hesitant in the early stages - Vance definately felt the stronger candidate performance wise. IF any voters out there were trying to decide still on who to vote for, I think the Republicans may have made any gains that were up for grabs

well if all that’s coming at you is complete hysterics then yes, that’s my goto response - similarities to Trump are purely coincidental

What is this 60 minutes interview that Trump is too scared to do?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,528 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Trump's reason for not doing an interview with 60 Minutes has been revealed. Those biased, partisan, corrupt hacks at 60 Minutes had the unmitigated gall to insist on something completely unprecedented that they have called "fact checking"

I mean to think someone being interviewed when running for election as President of the United States should be questioned and "fact checked"… that's just insanity. They expect Trump to actually have to explain what he means after he screams "THEY'RE EATING THE DOGS!"? They expect him to actually explain who will be paying the tariffs he says he'll introduce? That's completely unfair, and dammit it's un-American!

Yeah I've rewatched some of the clips from last night and I've changed my opinion a bit. Honestly I think neither candidate did too badly. Walz was a bit hesitating at first and had a few gaffes/waffley answers and Vance was slick and composed from the start.

It would have been nice to see Walz hammer Vance/Trump a bit harder on his abortion/IVF/School shooting stance. But it didn't really seem like that was the vibe in the room. There was a surprising aura of friendliness and agreement between both the candidates and I wonder did Walz just read the room and decide that being too hostile would make him look like a bit of a d*ck.

The second half Walz was much stronger and Vance was caught very obviously lying by him a few times.

All in all I'd have been happy to call it a draw until the end.But then Vance very clearly could not answer whether or not Trump had lost the election and Walz caught him out badly on it. That seems to be the clip doing the rounds at the moment. And it will probably be what is remembered most from the debate. Along with Vances mic being turned off while arguing with the moderators(never a good look).

Anyway we'll see later what script is being handed to our centrist friends later. I imagine they'll be here to hammer Walz on the Tiananmen Square answer(which was a bit awkward but honestly a non issue) and his gaffe on knowing "school shooters"(everyone knew he meant school shooter victims).

It’s much more simple than that- a second debate with Harris will only benefit Harris and Trump knows that - why would he put himself into that position so close to the election ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,026 ✭✭✭✭Tell me how

I saw a poll that said Walz went from 62% suitability for VP to 65% during the debate, and JD went from 35% to 32%.

Are you saying you felt that that wasn't the case?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,611 ✭✭✭✭LambshankRedemption

Vance is coming across very well I have to admit. Much better than I expected.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,611 ✭✭✭✭LambshankRedemption

The question was why he doesn't want to do a 60 Minutes interview - because they will be doing live fact checking.

The debate was almost "normal" in general tone. There weren't any "They're eating the Dogs!!!!" moments and both sides showed some degree of mature acknowledgement of the other - Both of them said that they thought the other had some reasonable ideas. Both men filibustered a bit on some answers , as politicians do , but largely like a "normal" debate".

It was a debate like the kind we'd have seen before Trump came on the scene and shat all over everything.

At least it was relatively normal until Vance refused to admit that Trump lost in 2020 and waffled BADLY on it.

Like you say , sort of an honourable draw until that moment when Vance swerved into the Trump sized ditch that he'd largely avoided up to that point.

By doing so and putting his loyalty to Trump ahead of the truth and the Country he lost the debate because he confirmed he's unfit to hold the office.

    JDV: Margaret.

The rules were that you guys weren't going to fact check, and since you're fact checking me, I think it's important to say what's actually going on.

Explanation: JDV did not like Margaret pointing out to and addressing the viewers that the Haitian immigrants presence in Springfield was fully legal and in compliance with US law as it contradicted what he had just said. Margaret did not fact check or address the senator, she addressed her remarks to the the viewers.

The last sentence in his remarks to her was an invitation, per se, to her to call him out directly on his lie - "Senator, that's a falsehood" - a trap which she did not respond to nor fall for.

Well you may have been misled by the cohort on here who think Vance is a moron.

He has a degree from Yale, was a corporate lawyer, a military journalist, venture capitalist, and a best selling author.

Thats not the cv of a moron.

A self made man who pulled himself up from poverty and didnt sleep his way to the top like many others.

The 60 Minutes interviews are separate interviews with each candidate, not a debate between them. They would have been filmed and aired separately. So as per Trump's own campaign spokesperson, the reason Trump isn't agreeing to an interview is because they want to factcheck him during the interview (and likewise, they will have agreed with Harris to factcheck her during her interview).

Yeah he is a good speaker, it's a pity he has to spend his time defending terrible policies that I don't even think he believes in. It makes you wonder why we have this set of four when there are thousands of quality debaters under 40 in the country. But I guess speaking and debating is about 5% of the job now.
