Clearly she did an exceptional job academically speaking - All of the children wne to 3rd level, getting multiple advances qualifications.

But the evidence of her abject failure to produce rounded, balanced adults capable of functioning in society is there for all to see.

What is SB doing to compromise? How exactly is he giving prospective masters the confidence to take him on?

    Would you hire SB?

You know when the mother and rest of the family are ranting at someone asking them questions about their poor little Enoch in prison, why don't they turn the tables on them and start throwing questions at them? why are you demonizing trans people? would Jesus target Trans people like you are doing or would he love everyone and treat them with respect? why did you home school your kids? etc etc give them a taste of their own medicine.

Ignoring them is far more powerful - they’ll edit their videos anyway to make you look and sound like an idiot - it’s what they want you to do- it won’t be much of a video if you don’t say anything

    - I do wonder though besides the entertainment value do they have an actual audience of followers who hang on their every word and watch these videos accordingly? Shirley not in Ireland? America most definately but Ireland?

    How will this all end?

He can't stay in jail forever.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,251 ✭✭✭✭Arghus

I'm sure the odd person does, but it doesn't make the final cut of their videos.

Their reputation precedes them as well at this stage. People feel like there's no point debating them.

And also, maybe the real truth of it is, you are falling into their trap. They don't really want debate or answers: they want confrontation.

Did they really think they were going to get a solution, at a stand manned by volunteers at the ploughing championship? What they want is maximum public disturbance; to get into a shouting match.

They can't really debate in a meaningful sense - which is ironic, considering all their prizes won for exactly that. I've never seen in any video, or read in any court report, a single instance of them giving ground or altering their position about anything: just absolute certainty and righteousness at all times.

So, if they can't be debated, the alternative is to beat them at their own game and try to browbeat them. I think that would be a zero sum game. You'll never convince them and what purpose does it serve - most people with a brain in their head can already see them for the hypocritical, intolerant and close minded crowd that they are.

I agree that he can't stay in jail forever but it would take some mediator to sort out this mess. That mediator would never be idle if they can sort that out.

Exactly. He is not being held against his will. He can leave Mountjoy any time he wants to.

It is entirely his choice to remain in contempt and ignore the High Court order ordering him to stay away from WHS.

Another Burke who needs to learn that actions have consequences.

Interesting take on Simeon’s plight in the IT this morning. The headline is misleading though, that’s not the writer’s opinion

    https://www.irishtimes.com/opinion/2024/09/20/someone-needs-to-give-simeon-burke-a-barrister-job-for-all-our-sakes/

Also saw Sean Guerin is head of the Bar Council. He’ll make this much worse than it needs to be. Admonished by the Supreme Court for his hatchet job on Alan Shatter. How does a barrister write a report and make findings into Shatter’s handling of a matter without interviewing him at all? Simeon has some hope, that is, being mistreated and later vindicated in Court with that fool in charge.

This is water. Inspiring speech by David Foster Wallace https://youtu.be/DCbGM4mqEVw?si=GS5uDvegp6Er1EOG

Harridan* is the word that best describes that woman………

    Various dictionaries describe it thus:

    • an unpleasant woman, especially an older one, who is often angry and often tells other people what to do
    • a scolding old woman; nag
    • a nasty, bad-tempered woman, esp. an old one
    • a scolding, vicious woman; hag; shrew
    • a woman regarded as critical and scolding
    • a woman who is unpleasant and aggressive
    • a malevolent witch

She comes across as a nasty and unpleasant piece of work, quite vicious, utterly incapable of empathy and convinced that any view that goes against her's is utterly wrong and without merit, and that the holders of such views need to be ridiculed, treated with contempt and beaten down. She is the worst type of teacher, seeing to mold her charges in her own image and should never ever be allowed anywhere near an educational role.

    • Harridan is an old word and is gendered. The definitions are accordingly written from a historic perspective and are also gendered. If it were up to me I'd happily modernise it to make it gender neutral.

I don't see anything there about transphobia, I looked up the PDF and saw this though

    Background
The Equality Action Plan Working Group, a sub-committee of the Equality and
Resilience Committee, has consulted the insights and expertise of relevant
stakeholders in order to better understand the challenges faced by
underrepresented, disadvantaged and minority groups in accessing and pursuing
    a career at the Bar
. Among those consulted were: AsIAm, Ireland’s national autism
    charity
; the Association for Higher Education Access & Disability (AHEAD); the
National Disability Authority; the Dyslexia Association of Ireland; the Immigrant
    Council of Ireland; the National Women's Council; the Irish Traveller Movement;
the Irish Network Against Racism; and, the OUTLaw Network. We are indebted
to those who gave so generously of their time and feedback.

Doesn't need to specify transphobia or any other kind of discrimination - I mentioned it because they're the specific ones relevant to this discussion.

We are committed to building a working environment where everyone feels welcomed and valued, and ensuring the full, equal and effective participation of all.

All means all, end of story.

As regards he PDF file, the OUTlaw network would have that one covered.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Completely misleading headline alright, given the content of the article.

Tbh, I do think there's absolutely questions about how the whole system of "devilling" works - it does seem archaic in and of itself.

But then, on the other hand, it seems completely understandable why nobody would be willing to take SB on. With all the best will in the world, nobody would.

But a good question - which that article doesn't get into - is how many others in the past have failed to secure a master. How commonplace is it or is SB totally unique.

I could only stick ten seconds of it but there is a video by Simeon Burke up on Youtube of him bemoaning the fact no one will take him on. The heading for it is "Award Winning Barrister" , did he get a gold star from Mammy or something??

I don't think she was eyeing her up in admiration!

Her look was disapproving and judgemental, with just a hint of scorn.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,944 ✭✭✭Ezeoul

I might be remembering this incorrectly, but I think some people on thread alluded to the possibility of SG taking on SB himself…

'It may be hard to have too much sympathy for Burke, but his plight raises questions about access to the profession for those whose world view does not conform to the rather narrow one that prevails in society. That is not healthy for any democracy that draws its judges from such a shallow pool. Particularly one such as ours that is undergoing dramatic and far-reaching change.'

A few things. Firstly, access to the profession such as it is, is a meritocracy. His personal demeanour and public facing profile is a crucial part of a barrister's stock and it should be no surprise to him that his family are making him a laughingstock in the profession. Moreover, how could he be tasked with representing a gay or trans person without prejudice. It would even be a bad look if he had to appear against a gay or trans person as his prejudice is already widely known. The IT's point about a healthy democracy is therefore laughable, given that his very presence at the Bar would be an explicit admission by the legal profession that certain people's rights will be ignored or poorly serviced. So while he won't get taken on here, he'd be valued in the States and other places where preserving democracy seems to be an afterthought for some.

Have you seen the strange comments under their videos, "a great Irish mother" "Enoch should be president" and lots of anti government comments.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,037 ✭✭✭✭pgj2015

But they aren't the only ones who can record a video. put up the unedited video.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,630 ✭✭✭Tork

Part of a barrister's job is to keep their emotions in check and to be cool-headed and professional, even when they're representing the worst people. Leaving aside the thoughts of the legal profession on him, why would any member of the public want him representing them? Could you trust him not to fly off the handle if something triggers him?

How many of the comments are from real people in Ireland though?

Only this afternoon did I look at them - yeah strange alright - given there’s about a gizillion Burkes (slight exaggeration) I’m guessing multiple dummy accounts coupled with far right agitators?

I don't agree with the Burkes family behaviour at all. Horrible people. However I don't like that idea that a practicing a profession is closed off to a person based solely on the fact that their an asshole. At the end of the day, it should be the public and paying clients to determine if some can practice, and not necessarily anyone else (one they passed all the necessary exams etc.)
