In fairness to Checo, Baku is a track he's legitimately good around

The wing will need some degree of flexibility but that centre of wing lifting at the edges is surely giving a "mini drs" effect. Is this why Mclaren talk about clean air being so important? If it aids in drag then it can't be legal

If random people can see an issue with McLarens wing from the telly then I assume it’s been well noted by the teams and any concerns forwarded to the FIA

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,093 ✭✭✭Captain_Crash

They will have noticed and the same thing will happen as it did with Red Bull and Mercedes before, they’ll look at it and decide it it’s legal or not. Not much more to it than that.

The FIA can also adjust the tests as needed in order to get teams to change/stop what they are doing as well.

If I recall last year FIA banned Aston Martin’s flexible front wing and destroyed their season, this year McLaren is doing it even more aggressively. Interesting times ahead are the FIA fit to police F1.

So I see James Vowles is trying to see can he help Franco Calapinto secure a seat at Sauber which makes sense. Would be nice.

As much as he surprises me, he gives Giovanazzi vibes. He aced the first two races, got the contract and botched the third.

We will just have to wait and see how he does in Singapore.

There's been a few cases of drivers wowing on their first outing, but then subsequently proving to be average or worse. De Vries and Van Doorne are two other examples I can think of. At least we'll get to see Calapinto for the rest of the season, so people can see if it was beginner's luck or not.

Apparently the deadline is reached for Lawson to be free to talk to other teams, could be a contender for Sauber? That's if RedBull has made a decision on the VCARB seat, I think he deserves a shot

Rumour is for Riccardo to be sacked soon. That would free up Lawson cockpit

Seen those rumours earlier on, not like it would be any kind of a surprise. The 3 week break would be an ideal time to announce it

Where did Ricciardo come in Sundays race? Did he even score a point. I don't think he did or did he?

Off top of my head I think 12th? He could be driving amazingly well, but the VCARB car and team do a great job to hide it. See also Yuki Tsunoda.

Red bull must be really struggling if they can't afford a bit of paint..

I guess they thought they would be running away with the championship and be way out ahead off everyone else again like last year. The extra competition the performance of there car and they place in the Constructers this year has made them change there minds on that.

Not sure if this was discussed here, but Adrian Newey was commenting on sky's British bias. This article is specifically about Crofty's response which is a load of rubbish.

Alonso, Vettel, Rosberg and Verstappen were all heavily vilified by Sky F1, I’m trying to think of what they all have in common…

Really. I don't think Sky F1 existed when Alonso or Vettel won the championships. I know it did not. Rosberg maybe.

Sky got the contract for 2012 I believe so would have got some of Vettel's years, including 2012 itself where Hamilton was arguably the faster driver but reliability cost him the title. Alonso being another title challenger to Lewis that year could have seen him portrayed the enemy of course, wasn't watching back then so not sure if Sky were as pro-Brit as they currently are

launched in 2012. Covered the end of Vettel's range and the rosberg hamilton duel in full. I remember watching, I had sky f1 free as it was in the HD pack then.

Anyone know what the converage is like in other countries?

Do the Italian commentators favour Ferrari racers over the competition, in coverage and perception?
Do the Dutch critise Verstappen's competitors?

Is it uniquely a Sky F1 thing with the Brit drivers, as you would think based on the level of criticism leveled at them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,451 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

I'd argue the difference with Sky versus other countries is that the Sky coverage is semi-global coverage. Their coverage is used in the US (ESPN), Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, etc. Basically an awful lot of English speaking countries get the Sky Sports feed on broadcast channels (there is F1 TV too, but that is separate).

I'd fully expect Italian commentators to go all in on Ferrari. When RTÉ covered F1 in the 90s it was expected that they'd be all in on Jordan.

If Sky F1 were UK only, then go mad being all pro-British drivers/teams. But there needs to be recognition that they are not just coveraing the UK right now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 49,248 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

But Sky are a UK coverage team, with UK people for the most part. You are ok with Italians being for the Italians, but its an effing disgrace the Brits are favourable (to put it mildly!) to the Brits.

Their exposure is more an F1 (as a company) issue than a Sky F1 issue though - wouldn't most of their revenue be coming from UK Subs,, or did they bid and win on the basis of providing a neutral POV for the global market? Does the money earned from Global use outweigh the money on the Sky Sports/Now TV subs?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,033 ✭✭✭✭flazio

Semi ironically, the British Broadcasting Corporation's radio coverage tends to be reasonably neutral.

    This too shall pass.

I would occasionally watch old german f1 coverage (seems to last without copyright strikes a lot longer) and their coverage, while pro german , is not as obvious as the british.

FIA have said the mclaren rear wing in fully legal. Pulled the statement from bbc

“The FIA is closely monitoring the flexibility of bodywork on all cars and reserves the right to request teams to make modifications at any point during the season.

“However, if a team successfully passes all deflection tests and adheres to the regulations and technical directives, they are deemed to be in full compliance, and no further action will be taken.

“The FIA is currently reviewing data and any additional evidence that has emerged from the Baku GP and is considering any mitigating measures for future implementation.

“This is part of the standard process when scrutineering technical legality, and the FIA retains the authority to introduce regulatory changes during the season if required.”

They have bought up the rights for coverage in Ireland but don't acknowledge that. They know they are broadcast around the world, but still favour the Brits. Italian coverage is in Italy only.

The issue is probably more on F1's side in that, until 2 years ago (I think?) all of their highlights packages/etc used Sky's commentary too.
