In PA the supreme court has ruled that ballots with the 'wrong postmark date' can be thrown out, valid or not. I said valid because even if the ballot arrives by the voting deadline on election day, it can still be tossed, despite the rational conclusion that the ballot is within the deadline. However procedural the ruling is, it is unclear if this will be resolved before election day. In dissent, 3 justices (including the Chief Justice of the court) invoked King's Bench Power and plan to proceed the case ASAP. The court did not yet consider the merits of the case, only the jurisdiction.

Ha ha ha ha ha - I mean if you’re going to develop a conspiracy theory at least pick the fans of a band or an artist that could credibly be believed - the worst Taylor Swift fans will do to Trump will be to vote for Harris

Why do Republicans want Trump dead?

Well there's a body of opposition of the 'old' Republican party who are opposed to Trump… who see him as having hijacked the party and taken it away from Reagan \ Bush type foreign policy. Also the attempted stealing of the election and inciting a mob who wanted to hang Republican VP Pence merely for doing his constitutional duty and certifying legitimate election results.
40 out of 44 of Trump's former administration including Pence have refused to endorse him in the general election versus a Democrat. Mitt Romney, 2012 Republican candidate for President, refuses to endorse Trump.
    That is remarkable.

So in that body of opposition, it just takes one nutjob with a gun, to get an idea about doing it.

Further to the above, these Republicans endorse Harris.

More than 200 Republicans who previously worked for either former President George W. Bush, the late Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., or Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president in an open letter Monday obtained exclusively by USA TODAY.

"At home, another four years of Donald Trump’s chaotic leadership, this time focused on advancing the dangerous goals of Project 2025, will hurt real, everyday people and weaken our sacred institutions," the letter says, referring to the Heritage Foundation's policy blueprint that the Trump campaign has sought to distance itself from.
Abroad, democratic movements will be irreparably jeopardized as Trump and his acolyte JD Vance kowtow to dictators like Vladimir Putin while turning their backs on our allies. We can’t let that happen."

Posters can discuss the election here

We don't need two active election threads. Thread closed

Following representations made after my above post I am re-opening this thread and re-naming it, making it the "officialk" election thread given issues with the prior one

Just to add, please ensure you remain civil. We do not need posters brining up the "rapist sympathiser" or "Kinky Kamala" type of stuff. Stick to the election. Any legal issues concerning Trump can be discussed in the dedicated Trump thread. I am closing the other Harris v Trump thread to avoid having 2 threads going over the same stuff

An assassination attempt on a former president and current runner - I’m wondering how this impacts the American psyche in general - I don’t care what Trump “is” or isn’t - I think this latest incident will bring people stronger together and united behind, dare I say it- Trump .

Oddly enough, the first one was, a 24 hour wonder. This possibly has less impact, as the sniper didn't discharge any shot at Trump. Mostly, taking oxygen from the Harris/Walz campaign is the main impact.

Did you see the two posts from him today?

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I thank the lord he is so profoundly stupid.

There are so so many occasions he could have used certain events for political capital, and he has failed to.

The first, and not so much the second, events presented him with such an opportunity to come across as a leader, rising above the hate and broadcasting a message of unity. It was (amongst other things) a golden opportunity, and yet he did what? Appeared like a thug, and only then ratched up the rhetoric.

And he's done it again today.

    An utter idiot.

I dunno- point of principle? Preserving democracy? Who knows the reasons they’ll put forward?

It’s more me thinking out loud than any strong view held - certainly I’m not interested in seeing Trump winning- but considering this is such a mad election anyway and we’ve so much more to come who knows

We aren't immune from that kind of politics and we're certainly seeing more populism and nationalism taking hold with threats against politicians and more and more TDs resigning because they're fed up of getting threatened

Our political system does have a lot of safeguarding built in to prevent a populist like Trump from taking power and even if they did it would severely limit them

This is the major difference between the US and many other countries, their president wields significant power whereas many nations here have much more powerful legislatures which keep the executive in check. It's great for them in an emergency where the president needs extra powers, but it's vastly open to abuse as we've seen

Even in Europe the supposed gain of the far right have fallen flat in many places. Italy is probably the biggest success story and mostly because the brotherhood party veered towards the centre shortly after being elected

In France for example a lot of people say RN won the election with the biggest number of seats, but they didn't secure a majority and have united the opposition against them

In the Netherlands literally no party will work with the far right PVV party so they failed to form a government

In Germany a lot is said about AfD winning recent regional elections, however it's CDU likely to win the next general election with most of the population fed up of the social democrats accomplishing mostly nothing (turns out the only successful Angela Merkel is Angela Merkel)

So while there's no immunity to the far right in any democratic system, in a true multi party government there's always going to be a force driving consensus and compromise at the cost of ideological purity

It's the opposite situation in the US, there's two parties worth talking about and they both have around 50% of the vote. If one side was losing significantly they'd rapidly change policy back towards the centre. Similarly if there was a multi party system you'd see more level headed figures from across the political spectrum come together to form policies rather than the farcical reality TV show it currently is

But, this is the America the rest of the world is stuck with so we all have to sit and watch and hope there's enough functional brain cells there to get Harris across the line

An Iranian response to the removal of Soleimani, Trump was the target.

Like the Iranian directed attacks in the Red Sea, Israel, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq etc. the weak stance and relaxation of sanctions against the Mullahs has been a green light by the Democrats to the regime in Tehran.

They aren't just inspiring nutjobs in their own movement or sympathetic to attack others.

From Philip Roth about 20 years ago. You could swap a few names out and… it's pretty accurate.

"Lindbergh's first act is to sign a treaty with Nazi Germany that promises that the United States will not interfere with German expansion in Europe, known as the "Iceland Understanding," and another with Imperial Japan that promises non-interference with Japanese expansion in Asia, known as the "Hawaii Understanding."

I’m not saying you’re wrong because simply I don’t have a clue at this point what his strategy “should” be- all I know is many called him stupid in 2016 and he won 😀

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,025 ✭✭✭✭everlast75

Just because he won, it doesn't mean he isn't stupid.

He could have won in 2020, but didn't keep his mouth shut with COVID, and that cost him the election.

I think he’s well versed in the art of manipulation - but maybe he’s so rooted in that he can’t see himself towards adapting his strategy , especially when it might favour him - certainly there were occasions even recently when he could have issued different responses - can only be a good thing in my view - but with the vote margin he had at least till recently I would never call him stupid .

Current Trump beau, Laura Loomer, was reported to have a deleted tweet which stated that if Kamala got into the White House, it would smell of curry.

The woman is currently eyeing up a potential position in another Trump administration. The only reason there is any pushback on her from anyone else in Trump's orbit is that they're not entirely sure if they have the enough voters who are comfortable with nakedly bigoted language with room for ambiguity.

And a pathetic reaction from JD Vance ...

    "I dont like those comments."

No real attempt to criticise the racist drivel from Loomer even though his wife is also of Indian background.

These are the prominent figures of the Republican party today. The morally bankrupt and the morally repugnant.

So you believe that Trump is xenophobic and not racist when he speaks about foreigners, that he mentioned the "birther conspiracy" not in relation to the colour of Obama's skin but because he argued that Obama was not born in the US, in other words an alien that did not have the right to be elected as US president?

Recent polls show neck and neck race in swing states, not much of a boost from the DNC or Debate, and that's not including the 2nd assassination attempt on Trump.

Thank feck celebrities and late night comedians don't decide elections, keep living in your bubbles.
