My current PC I made capable of playing modern games and it could probably outperform the PS5 (not sure about the Pro but it'd probably be close). The reason I stick more with the PS5 than PC comes down to one simple thing:

    Untitled Image

(not my actual couch, I don't live in a completely white clinical space)

I work from home and my PC is in my home office. I don't want to spend all day there then half the evening/weekend playing games up there too. When I play games, I want to splodge out on the couch in the Living Room with the big TV. In that regard (and then as well as the usual plug-and-play, existing library etc advantages), I just can't see PC gaming as ever being a competitor to console for the benefits it gives me in a subjective manner rather than objective. And especially now that I have a Steamdeck which I can also play from the comfort of the aforementioned couch.

TBH I’m often in the same boat when it comes to console v PC - a lot of games I’d rather play on console because I can relax on the couch in the evening after working from home on my PC for the day. The PS5 is powerful enough that I also feel a lot of multi platform games run perfectly fine on it (that was not the case with the PS4) - though would be straight to PC for something more demanding like Black Myth or Alan Wake 2. I’m lucky enough to have both options, and use both a lot.

Though tbh if I was looking at spending 900-1000 euro regardless (which thankfully I’m not at the moment), that’s when I’d start wondering if a small form factor PC specifically for the TV might be the better option. To me the Pro really doesn’t alight with the traditional console price advantage - not that I’m too personally worried as it’s not an upgrade I need or want at the moment.

I think everyone's price point and use case is different. I don't spend much on myself so I don't mind every year getting something nice.

It's a nice chunk of money but if you stick €20 a week into a "present for me fund" then it's doable once a year to get something extravagant and not worry about the price.

I have an older PC now (i5 with a GTX 1060 ) that could get an upgrade but it's also been sitting idle for years now. I don't think putting hundreds into it would actually get me value for money. Any interesting (non pS5) PC games I want to play I have the steam deck to fill that gap.

Good article by Eurogamer/Digital Foundry kind of tangentially about the PS5 Pro, but more about why people will still opt for console over PC, even when some might already have a PC.

I think that article perfectly sums it up.

Think some of this PS5 Disc Drive sold out stuff is a bit overblown. Making a lot of stories and headlines, but the reality is the larger US retailers have had no stock issues with Walmart etc having consistent supply.

I don't doubt that some opportunists have jumped on them over here and the UK, especially with Amazon's policies freely facilitating such action plus small inventory held in physical/online stores doesn't help to be fair, but I don't think they'll be much of a problem with supply overall leading up to Xmas, especially once the reality of the Pro takeup hits.

Sure you can get them right now on Very.ie or ShopTo (granted with the usual Very Tax). Just don't give the gougers on eBay your time and money. They'll eventually make their way back to stores.

Yeah I wouldn't have thought there was ever a huge amount of them in stock anyway, so while there are probably a few scalpers, a lot of them might also just be being bought by people who know they will be buying a PS5 Pro and so are getting the disk drive in advance (just in case there might be supply issues of it on the day). If I do decide to get the Pro (still very much on the fence or something I'll leave until next year), I'd likely do the same and get the disk drive and vertical stand in advance (though may not bother with the disk drive at all considering I've no physical games other than the Uncharted Collection for PS4 that CEX wouldn't take because it was bought in the US).

Going by what is stated only the Pro console, Portal and the Edge controller will be available here with the digital console and standard Dualsense only available in territories with access to the Direct store.

That is nice, but has to push the price to over a €1000. The Edge and stand is around €250 today.

Unless they do are doing a bait and switch with a "good value" package. And people convince themselves a €899 package is cheap as you get €100 off an edge and stand.

What are the chances of this being even remotely possible to acquire in Ireland? Will the likes of Smyths even stick this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,041 ✭✭✭sniper_samurai

Smyths should have some stock of the Pro, Portal and DS Edge going by the blog. I can't atest to quantity, especially with how limited the Pro console is.

That controller looks lovely. Hopefully Smyths sell it.

One huge advantage of the disk drive, that I keep forgetting about is that you can watch 4K HDR movies with it. Watched Interstellar last night on it and OLED TV, was a completely different experience to the last time I saw it on DVD / 1080p LED. Incredible.

I dunno, anyone who has an OLED tv surely has alternative means to playing films in 4k? Like a dedicated player or Apple Tv 4k box etc. Maybe it's my age but I prefer digital these days, the less clutter in the house the better I say. Did my time collecting physical films/games and still have an attic full of retro games to show for it. Had to skip 100s of dvds recently as the charity shop didn't want them the picky gits! 😁 Although I would still buy physical games for Switch, but that's a rare thing.

On the topic of the 30th anniversary PS gear, they look lovely imo except for this logo - I can't un-see the word Xbox in it!

I've no plans to get a load of 4K movies. That's why the PS5 is good enough. I love the offline aspect of physical ownership too. Hate the whole streaming/subscription/monitoring/measuring/analytics/no ownership model.

The blog post has now been updated with images of the packaging for these items.

Streaming in 4k isn't the same. It still gets compressed. I've not bought a movie on disk in ages but have been considering a few UHD since I got the OLED.

Have the attic full of DVDs too. Painful to see those price tags. €19.99. hundreds of them in boxes up there. Hopefully there is a vinyl style turn around.

A few do have value. Hopefully you didn't bin 28 days later. Worth a nice bit now since it's not on any streaming service. Ive seen DVDs go for over $100.

Disc media is still the place to get a lot of excellent niche and enthusiast releases that aren’t easily available digitally (legally anyway). The quality is definitely higher too. If anything, the move towards Blu Ray becoming a collectors’ and enthusiast medium has really encouraged labels to dive deep and release a lot of interesting films that would otherwise be neglected.

Still need a disc player for sure, and while the PS5 one isn’t the best player around, it saves having two devices under the TV.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,041 ✭✭✭sniper_samurai

The most valuable disc sets I have are my US Dragon Ball Z Dragon Box dvds, still somehow the best way to watch DBZ legally here as pretty much every home video release in English is cursed, including the streaming version on Crunchyroll. The full 7 volume set is worth about €1500.

The best available quality is the Spanish bluray release or Japanese Netflix as they're the only way to watch it in Japanese with stereo audio, all other releases are in very low quality mono.

Yeah 28 Days Later and it’s sequel were binned for sure. Only kept a handful of box sets like X-Files, Millennium etc Ah no big deal. 🙂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,645 ✭✭✭RocketRaccoon

I got excited there, I've about 700 dvds boxed away in the attic. 28 days later is one of them, it's on amazon for the princely sum of £3.80 right now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 181 ✭✭TrivialArguer

Same for me but with CDs 😡

Atleast DVDs are more useable these days than CDs…

Is the only place Irish customers have a shot of getting the 30th Edition stuff is on Smyths and Amazon?

Recently watched Bladerunner 1982 UHD disk on PS5. Was very good but the best visual Ive had on OLED was a 4k HEVC HDR of Tron Legacy. It blew me away with the neon against the deep blacks. No graininess and excellent Daft Punk soundtrack in Dolby too. The Tron themed Disney castle intro is what you get throughout the whole film. Amazing.

It's easily available as an MKV file 64.9gb from BLKFLX. Theres a 700mb sample with it. Unfortunately does not run from PS5 Console Storage USB section so I play it plugged into the back of my OLED. Well worth the download.

Yeah tempted by the Edge controller myself. I imagine they'll be in Smyths and won't be in as limited supply as the console bundles, as it's only the consoles that are numbered and limited to 12,300 being available. The standalone controllers should be easy enough to get.
