Had a tale of two 9's at the weekend. Major rd1 qualifier and felt in good form coming into this after recent good scores. Went out with the intention of posting a low one and felt I could get pb or close to it. Playing HC 16 on the day.

Front 9 went really well. Struck the ball sweetly, missed in the right places, got up/down and made my putts. Turned in plus +3 which was a new best- delighted as it was strokeplay and off back tees. Felt good to perform as I set out to do.

Back 9 went horribly wrong, unfortunately. Wobbled on ten with a double where I couldn't scramble a bogey. Scrambled par on 11. Missed from 4ft for par on 12. On 13 I knocked down my drive and blocked a 7w off the planet OB from the rough. Wasn't a horrible lie just terrible execution and slightly poor decision on reflection. Trundled my way to a triple. Steadied with two pars. Took percentage iron on the 16th but tugged into a tree and slashed out of the penalty area to behind another tree. Laid up and took 2 ugly swipes with a wedge before 3 stabbing for another triple. Piped an angry drive down 17 and tugged my PW but stayed on. Too aggressive on a long downhill slider and another 3 putt for bogey. 18 I blocked my drive into trees. Rushed my second as I was playing into a group walking up the adjacent fairway. Duffed underneath a small tree and checked out mentally at that point, taking 4 more to get home and home for a nett 72 (88). I didn't even qualify as scoring was ridiculous, more than 1/3 of the field were nett par or better.

It was crushing to put in 3x triples and a double on the back 9. Especially when I normally score better on it. Apart from the OB ball the rest were poor shots combined with bad choices. I genuinely didn't snap until I got stuck under a small tree at 18 for my 4th.

For now, it's a case of erasing the bad and focusing on the good golf (9 GIRs and great front 9). I know there is a sub 80 round in there and I don't think I'll gift as many shots to the field for quite some time. No comps for a couple of weeks but hopefully getting a round with an old colleague and a little short game practice over the next week.

Had my best ever round at the weekend.

After joining a club this year. (Have been a casual player over the years) Had set myself a loose goal of trying to break 100 and getting my handicap into the 20's this year but over the last few weeks the scores seemed to be trending in the wrong direction (109/116/113).
Signed up for a stableford comp at the weekend and long story short ended up shooting 103 for 39 pts. Couldn't believe it when I entered my score on the computer. I knew I had a steady enough round going (no scratches & only lost 1 ball on the 13th) but didn't think I had scored in the high 30s.

It opened my eyes a bit too on how to score as I would normally hope to get 1-2 pars & end up with a few scratches in a round but I didn't have any of either at the weekend. Shot 54 on the front 9 (2 bogeys, 6 doubles and a triple) and 49 on the back 9 (6 bogeys and 3 doubles) which was by far the most consistent 9 holes I have played up to now. I definitely left a few shots behind as always but who knows maybe breaking 100 is realistic after all……

Cant wait to get out for a round again this week but I am fully expecting 110+ again to bring me back down to earth :)

    Fair play to ya.

I try..and often fail..to keep doubles off my card by playing within myself..laying up short of greens etc.

    Generally..but not always..works.

Always nice to see someone shoot their lowest ever score. Well done! My guess is you'll beat it often now that you've done it. And 100 is very realistic. If you keep the big scores off your card you're bound to roll in plenty of bogeys and a par or two. One piece of advice I will give though - is don't be afraid to re-adjust what the score you're trying to avoid on a hole is. I'd love to keep doubles off my card, but if I've a 15 foot putt for bogey I'll be thinking more about avoiding triple than making double. A double bogey in that instance is an easy point. Whatever you're trying to achieve you're not going to do it if you don't take the easy points.

After Portarlington with the society I was inspired to head out again. I'd played well and wanted some good scores on my handicap so headed out to Roganstown. Disappointingly, it was off the yellow tees. I asked why and the girl in the pro shop said that they just use the whites for medals and the blues not at all basically. I call BS on this, the yellows were a stupid tee to play from in perfect conditions. However, gripe aside I played very well for most of the day. I pulled a few drives at the start but got away with them. I'd 20 points after 9 and had putts shave the hole on 4 of the front 9 holes. I hit my rough patch from 11 to 13 - ball above my feet on 11 and instead of just punching down the fairway I decided to try to pop it onto the green. I went long and left and into trees. I did well to salvage a point for a double bogey. 12 wasn't the worst - I hit my iron fat on the par 3, hit a decent chip to a distance I'd make more than I'd miss and I missed it. And then a perfect drive on 13 and I just took a club too much to the green. I was lucky to find it over the back of the green and did okay to make a double bogey for a point. Then the next 4 holes - I left myself at most 15 feet for birdie and nearly made them all (unfortunately I made none!). And then an annoying finish, my pull came back from the tee on 18 and I hit into a lake that I didn't know was there and ended up scratching the hole. Still though, 37 points wasn't half bad.

So inspired again, I headed out to Balcarrick for another go. I won't give as much detail of that round, but safe to say my inspiration has now disappeared. I couldn't get a handle on the greens all day - a four putt being the worst of that. In fairness, my irons I couldn't fault. They somehow got me in with 30 points. Whereas my driving was shocking. I don't know how I didn't kill someone. So for a few weeks there I felt like I could play golf. I'll put them away for a couple of weeks until I forget that I can't again.

Torn muscle in shoulder has curtailed my game somewhat over the past few weeks.

Doped up on prescription painkillers headed out today mostly to see if i could play pain free..or nearly.

39 strokes on front 9 for 21 points was nice.

    Shoulder held up well.

44 strokes on back 9 for 20 points with 2 double bogeys from 14 on as painkiller wore off.

    83 strokes 41 points.

    Striking good..wedges good..putting very good.

Shoulder very sore afterwards..heat treatment and massage gun plus painkillers needed.

Cancelled tomorrow. Need to be pain free for Boards outing next saturday.

Just started getting back into golf after not playing since my teenage years (~20 years),

Played three full courses (with some par 3/pitch and putts in between) in the last month or so, don't currently have a handicap/club etc. so just looking at strokes. Was targeting shooting under 100.

New Ross: 103 - Yellow weather warning so was rough wind wise but very enjoyable.

Kilkea Castle: 111 - Out with work society, narrow fairways and had one or two lost balls off the tee. Second nine was 10 shots better than first nine so positive progress.

Silloge: 95 - Had some great holes, but also left a few putts out there that should have gone in. Reckon that 90 would have been possible if I had been a little more dialed in.

Very happy with the improvement so far, would be happy to stay around the 95 mark on the next few outings or if possible push down a bit further, but really enjoying it so far!

I was playing quite well and due to lose my two best rounds, so about enjoy that odd time of my handicap going up while I feel I'm playing well. But since I was playing well I thought I'd try to capitalise and cram in some golf to return some decent scores. So I played 6 rounds of golf in a month - I haven't done that since I was a junior.

If the first had gone badly I'd have lost a 7.1 differential and seen it replaced by a 19.4. A shot and a half back in one go! Thankfully that was the best round of the 6 and I only got .4 back. And fast forward to now - 5 of those 6 rounds are counting. I really feel like I'm not getting the low rounds I'm capable of, but I'm coming in with low - mid teen score differentials while really leaving some shots out there. But I'm far more content that my handicap isn't going to shoot up now. Before those 6 rounds my counting rounds ranged from 7.1 - 18.6. Now they're 10.5 - 14.5. And in my next 9 rounds I'm only going to lose the 14.5 so surely to God I'll come down another bit. In those 6 rounds where I was worried about gaining a shot or two, I actually managed to come down by .3. So I'm happy with that, although coming down by a shot or two would really have been nice.

As regards the rounds themselves, I shot 90 off the whites in Portmarnock links. 3 scratches / triple bogeys. A couple of shots thrown away in those, but I'd a few nice up and downs and nicely played holes in general.

Then an 87 in St Annes on a very windy day. I hit some good shots and got up and down very well all day there. I was fairly tired and hung over so was particularly happy with the round. Some really dodgy shots on the day which I put down to pints, but as I say overall very happy. I lost 4 drives though which I wasn't as happy about. Again - surely some room for improvement there.

Then an 85 from the greens in Portmarnock. Two triples / scratches on the day - both as a result of pulled drives. But the odd thing in that round was that I just couldn't buy a putt. My chipping was a bit off and putting a mile off. The only up and down I had on the day was on 15, other than that I wasted chance after chance all day. The most annoying one was on 5 when I probably hit my best shot of the year - a 5 iron into a severe wind to about 8 feet of the pin. And I left the putt a foot short. But I left myself greenside 6 times that day and only got up and down once. That was very disappointing, especially when I three putted twice too.

So overall, I'm pretty sure based on my last few rounds that I'm playing well. But you never know when that will utterly disappear. And I'd love to get the handicap down in this opportune time.

108 strokes in our Captains Prize qualifier. Was going ok (4 over after 6) then had a 14 on the par 5 7th, with 4 balls off the tee. Picked myself up a bit getting some pars on 8th-11th, then had another 14 on the 12th. Why not play it safe after losing one off the tee you may ask? Your guess is as good as mine to be honest. I pretty much gave up after that.

One of those rounds where i question why i play this game 😣

"82 strokes for 16holes" is probably how I'd chose to word that 🤔

Not quite as profound, but I turned on Sunday with 19 points, 4 over gross.

Finished with 27 points, 8 points / 15 over Gross.

Couldn't do anything right on the back 9. 1 lost ball, 2 internal OB, duff chips, duff irons.

Two sides of the coin within the same round - and we play a 9 hole course, so the same holes even.

    Game would drive you mad.

This is my exact round basically from last weekend.

Playing the Presidents Day and turn +4 with 18 points, finished with 27 points.

On the 445 yard index 1 par 4 3rd, hit my drive OB, then birdied the 2nd ball, for an unlikely and welcome bogey.

Turned and they had the tee box way forward on the short par 4 10th. Went for green off the tee, but pushed the drive and hit water greenside. Hit a poor 2nd, and then 3-putted from a nasty spot to scratch.

Hit my best drive of the day on 11 and made a solid GIR par to re-settle.

But then my driver disappeared from 12. Knocked down every tee shot (outside of par 3s) and started hitting everything really heavy, my timing just went off completely. So I went from 2-down on level 2s thru 11 to 9 down thru 18. Had some shocking luck on the way too. On 15, having knocked down my drive, I hit a poor 2nd too. But when I found my 2nd it was in the rough, and sitting in a really deep divot close to the front of it, couldn't get anything on the ball at all.

Was pretty disheartening stuff, and hasn't happened to my game like that in a long time.

Gotta try squeeze a range session in during the week to try get my timing back.

I think I had the same issue on timing. Torn between going and trying to rediscover it and leaving the clubs alone for a few weeks. 😤

Played captains qualifier Sunday in a gale and lashing rain. Was a disaster!!

I think this has been my worst ever year of golf, it must be the sh**e weather!Ha…

I was playing off 8.1 at the start of the year, and I’ve be a single digit golfer for over 15 years now, but I’ve drifted out to 10.9! My highest since my teenage years, a long time ago.

To be honest I’m not even scoring playing off 10.9 and it would be higher only for some unbelievable scrambling and putting displays that have saved some scores the last few months. I think I need a complete reset as all parts of my game has abandoned me, my irons are fat and toey on most strikes, my drivers can range from solid down the middle to complete hooks OOB, just zero consistency going. Which is strangle as consistency is what got me to single digits in the first place. I was never a huge hitter or an unbelievable iron player. But I could hit a 220/240 off the tee, and straight 90% of the time, I could get a iron close or on the green and I was a very good chipper and putter, thankfully the chipping and putting is still there. But instead of getting up and down for par, its rescuing bogies and sometimes doubles!

I’m just at a loss and really fed up of it all.

I finally broke the 80 mark this weekend in our August medal with a 79 for a Net 67, still only good enough for 5th but delighted to break that mark and it really should have been better.

The first 3 holes of our course I'm always happy to get through in 1 over which I did, then the 4th a par 5 was playing down wind. A solid drive and an 8 iron had me over the back of the green but managed to get up and down for a birdie, back to level par. The 5th our index 18 but with a back pin definitely doesn't play like it. You can take driver and go for the green but a very risk shot so decided to lay up with an 8 iron which worked out well leaving me with a wedge over the trees. Unfortunately just pulled this slightly to the left side of the green meaning a big sloping putt across an uphill and ended up 3 putting. The 6th hole was the worst of the day. Hit a great drive straight down the middle 100 yards left but a terrible approach shot had me in trouble and made a completely mess from there resulting in a double bogey 6. I was fuming with myself but settled down with 2 more pars and a bogey to finish out the front nine and four over. Still pretty decent.

Back 9 started very well with 3 more pars, all very straight forward. The 13th ,our index 1, I pulled the drive slightly meaning I was in the rough. Had about 150 left to pin, downwind I went with my 9 iron but caught a flyer and went a good 15 yards long of the green. Short sided I didn't make the up and down but a bogey is not a terrible result. One more bogey/par after this but a bit scrappy. The 16th the last par 5 is a hole I have big issues with. If you don't hit a straight tee shot it is very punishing and for my driving distance often resulting in lost balls due to gorse bushes. I was almost going to just pull out a 5 iron and lay up but went with the driver and of course put it in the gorse. It was actually a solid drive, just didn't draw back like planned and wind didn't push it back either. Hit my provisional down safely enough but a bit in the rough. I didn't have a full enough back swing to be able to go for the green in 2 so laid up with a 5 iron to about 70 yards, a decent chip in but it was an awkward pin position and couldn't hold the top tier. Managed to sink the putt for birdie with the second ball and rescue a bogey. Final two holes, a good par on the last par 3 after flying the green and a disappointing bogey on the last when it was a good par chance. But finished 8 over for the 79.

I was really happy with how I drove the ball and apart from one hole my approach play was pretty decent. Still room for improvement around the green. So far this year I've had 20 counting 18 hole rounds at my home course, 3 of those were 92, 91, 90 and the rest all in the 80's and now one in the 70s. Hopefully I can push on further and make this a regular occurrence.

Played three rounds since the last post and this morning broke 90

    Silloge: 93

Had some annoyance with two disappearing balls, clean shots, saw them land and bounce, but then couldn't find them. Putted poorly on the first 5 holes but then no more three putts for the round. Decided needed to focus more on just lag putting and making sure I don't take threes. Also, wedges were working very well for me.

    Letterkenny: 90

The course I played when I was a teenager. They've made some changes since then, more water hazards on the front 9 presumably to allow drainage as it was always hard slog in the wet (backs onto the Swilly river on the front 9). Fairway woods started clicking for me well, a big help on some of the longer holes. Ended up with 4 pars (2 3s, a 4 and a 5). Overall happy, only lost one ball.

    Elmgreen: 88

Very happy with this today, driving the ball with a more pronounced fade than I had intended, but adjusted after the first hole and worked great for the round. Got a birdie on the second hole (Par 5) but that was the highlight of the first half, all bogeys with 2 double bogeys so 45 for that half. Second 9 drove the ball well and had 3 pars. Was making good contact but realised as this was my first time on the course I was sometimes leaving myself poor angles for second shots. Will work to avoid that in future. Irons felt like I wasn't quite as dialled in today, but short game was good and tee shots were good so made up for the odd chunk.

Broke 90 (albeit on a par 70 rather than 72) but for a summer start back to golf after 20 years, and an initial target of breaking 100 I'm very happy. Hope to get a few more rounds in this year (I'll see how that goes) but happy with this as a starting point.

I've posted a few times here about my golfing woes this year, a severe drop off in from and I can't do anything right. However, I've been working hard on some swing changes and ironing out some flaws in my swing the last 2 months.

I hadn't played a competitive round in all that time, but I decided to enter a 9 hole comp at my local that we host every Friday. Shot a 39 for 20 points, 7 pars, a bogie and a double. 6 greens in reg for 6 of the pars too. Very satisfying round where I was never really in danger and felt in completely control of my game, for what feels like the first time in 18 months. The double was a bit of unfortunate, hit a great drive, and I just slightly pushed my 6 iron and it plugged deep in the green side bunker. 2 efforts to get it out and a long 2 putt followed.

Hopefully it's the start of a turning point in my game...

A very odd September medal for me on Sunday. I struggled off the tee all day regardless of what club I had in my hands, but thankfully my irons and short game were solid. A lot of grinding out pars and bogeys from less than desirable positions and despite having two doubles, a treble and quadruple bogey, all down to hooking tee shots and reloading, i finished with a net 74 and felt I was staring down the barrell of something much bigger

Played PGA National (where Czech Masters was a few weeks ago on DPWT) on Thursday and Albatross (where it used to be) on Friday.

Didnt play great but Albatross is a beautiful course…. Unfortunately it was the first day of heavy rain in region but we got around. All courses were closed then on Saturday.

I’ve had a disaster of a year, nearly 2 years actually. Went from shooting mid 80’s or low 90’s to 110/ 115’s due to inconsistent tee shots. I just couldn’t get the first ball off the tee.
Left the driver in the bag for my last round at my home club and with 17 holes open - I shot an 82! The difference when the ball is in play from the tee made the difference.

Played Druids Glen last week and tried the 3 wood approach again but much less luck, I think it’s a tougher course and was only my second time playing it.

Had a lesson last night, just on driver, and hopefully got my issue sorted so lots of work over the winter to hit the ground running next year.

I had an okish year, but after dealing with the shanks throughout 2023, I'm more than happy with it in comparison.

Like yourself, I've had issue off the tee. I've always considered myself a decent driver of the ball, so I'm reluctant to get lessons on it. I don't tend to hook or slice too badly, my go to shape is a slight draw and I'll hit it 3 out of 4, but my miss is a push fade. So it means I'm missing both left and right when I'm not on it.

My home course is fairly forgiven off the tee, so I'm not really punished, I'm also used to the areas where to aim so I'm more committed over each drive and it generally flies well.

However this year I played away, a lot, more than I ever had, and I've got really punished on the tighter courses. I've not been hitting OOB badly or anything, but I feel like I'm constantly punching out from the timber on the tighter courses, and as a result my confidence is down the big stick. I find it hard to commit to my line like a would at home.

Still some work to do with driver but happy enough with my score yesterday.

14 holes winter league and had 29 points.

Two unfortunate scratches, one where i hit my tee shot just off the fairway and couldn’t find the ball with leaves. One thing I hate about parkland in autumn. My approach shots were the best I’ve ever played and my putting was solid. Swapped between driver and 3 wood for the par 4/5’s and it worked mostly.
Need to discover this form next year when qualifying comes around.
