Yes, on a very busy day in a French motorway Aire, people grumbled a lot when the SoC went high and the charge speed dropped to 20 or 30 kW.

Lights or no lights, people will look at the screen and grumble as appropriate. I suppose the lights might raise the level of shame experienced.

Has anyone else had any issues with pre-authorization of a Visa debit card in the Ionity app? I've had them delete the card and retry it after double checking the details were correct, but it still gives an error "Hmm, something's gone wrong here".

EDIT: Tried an AIB credit card and exactly the same issue, support not being vey helpful here.

That's new, wasnt there when I was there the other day. Card payment at chargers needs to be standard, it's like non manned diesel pumps, people don't want a million apps, just a cents per kwh (like cents per litre) and a card terminal.

I thought for a second they'd just thrown some random payment terminal in the middle of the green area

I absolutely agree, I think this is something Circle K have absolutely gotten right with their network taking debit cards from the beginning

Just park, tap, plug in, charge, unplug and leave. Simple as that

Try checking your full address. I'm in the north but I've seen people put their normal address in and get your error. When they checked the eircode checker there was something subtle there, which they'd never have entered normally. Try matching that and you may have more success.

Well, thats a bit random. Its not very accessible. Is the grass going to be dry and walkable year-round? Never mind for wheelchair users.

I must attach a payment terminal to a random lamp-post near an ESB charger and start taking debit-card numbers.

I was literally thinking the same thing, reckon it'll be the next scam

It has something to do with the address you enter for the bank card, I think you may have to add a house number even if you don't have one. If you leave one of the entries blank it seems to confuse the German address system 🤯

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 21,534 ✭✭✭✭Alun

I was wondering that. There's a separate field for the house number, and German addresses put the house number after the street name so if it did an address check using that it would fail possibly. I'll try putting the house number before the street name and leaving the house number field blank.

The eircode address where I live also has an extra, completely unnecessary, street name after my street, but I can't find a place to put that apart from after the street name with a comma, but it's worth trying if the house number thing doesn't work.

Success! Put the house number in front of the street address and left the house number blank, but even that didn't work at first. The other issue seems to be it doesn't like a space between the two parts of the eircode!!!!

Pretty ridiculous in this day and age really. Most online retailers are perfectly able to cope with different country's address formats and idiosyncrasies.

Dublin update, there's a nightmare of a stop go so if you're going that way I'd recommend going around the shopping centre

Sorry about the crappy photos, best angle I could get while walking

Looks like the electrical cabinets are in place and there's a couple of massive holes dug and lots of electrical ducting around. I'm guessing they're cabling everything up and the next stage will be grid connection and commissioning

I don't think we'll be seeing it online for a couple of months yet 😬

The silver one is the ESB package substation. Its a very good sign and suggests to me that its well advanced

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 13,354 ✭✭✭✭the_amazing_raisin

Maybe, there's still a lot of groundworks happening, I'm not sure they'll be done soon. I'm guessing they need to cable the chargers to the transformer under the road which is an added complication

I wonder if the substation is an empty shell or does it come with equipment already installed. It would certainly speed things up if it was essentially plug and play

The substation is manufactured by a company called Powersub in Waterford. They supply modular substations to numerous clients, not just the ESB. It comes fully customisable (breakers etc.).

The unit in the photo is an enormous version which is no surprise given the power requirements EV hubs have.

I had Ionity passport but wasn't quite using it enough and still had card issues when charging. I found out I could setup a plug & charge certificate through electroverse (from octopus energy) and its 66c/kWh with no monthly fee. It works out cheaper than passport (5.99/m + 50c/kWh) up to 37kWh per month but beyond that there's not a huge difference unless you're charging over 100kWh a month. For occasional use and convenience electroverse seems handiest.

Not tested the plug & charge yet but have it installed with my ID3.

The substation is a 'package' so should be functionally complete, bar any commissioning works. I'd doubt the main contractor would have the chargers in place if they weren't fully cabled, as they're connected to the white boxes beside the substation. In fact what you see as the chargers are actually just dispensers, the white boxes are the actual chargers. The substation should be connected to the LV panels, usually a large green cabinet, which then supplies the white cabinets. Which is what makes me think the trenching is the ESB grid connection, or connection to the LV panel.

I'm passing by the Finglas site every Friday. The work happens in waves. Couple of weeks looks like a deserted place than next week they work under tent in the rain. Today at 08:45 there was a lot of ground work happening around that substation. I think the wiring from the chargers to their power supplies across the road is done. I saw the ducting in place for the substation. They seem getting close.

Getting to the place is quite easy just keep left if you come from the M50. For return I'd recommend if you go northbound better use Ballymun than to return to the traffic lights to N2. For southbound or city better use the roundabout St Margarets Rd/N2. Anyway we're ahead with this. Let's see it working first :). I keep forgetting to grab some pictures from the car.

Response received earlier today from ePower customer support; “Current tariff for IONITY using ePower app is €0.60 per kWh + €0.24 connection fee.”

This evening however the rates are now displayed on their App but at €0.64 per kWh, no mention of a connection fee.

I logged a ticket on the app yesterday to ask why there was no price indicated in the app. No response yet but the app now shows price of Ionity Kill as €0.64 per kWh!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 13,354 ✭✭✭✭the_amazing_raisin

The price is fairly irrelevant if the chargers won't activate. Has anyone actually managed to use Ionity with ePower?

I'm becoming convinced they just added the chargers into the app without actually setting up the connection to Ionity so people would download the app

Thats a possibility, I haven’t tried them yet as I rarely use public charging. Certainly with Freshmile you needed the RFID card to start a charge with IONITY here.

They (ePower) started to respond to complaints in the app store. First page of the shyte excuses handbook: blame a third party data provider.
