got 2m3 of oak from TJ O’Mahoney this time last year and they were a fine size and burned great

Got 1m3 of birch from Rathwood in march and size wasn’t as advertised and logs were small , were a good price though

i bought from Rathwood last year - they keep advertising special offers -End of season sale/pre-season/25 years in business/halloween etc…. Theres always a deal!

Prices look good but the oak logs are lighter than my previous supplier. Logs also smaller. You dont get 1m3 in the crate.

Also, I didnt like that I wasn’t informed when the delivery was arriving (2 seperate occasions) …they just landed out of the blue. Not worth the hassle.

Will go with a different company on my next order -with better quality/quantity logs and an agreed delivery date.

Rathwood is not the place to go for wood, lots of unhappy customers here and on trust pilot

    The internet isn’t for everyone

We went with Kenny Fuels and got a 1.2m3 crate of oak, very happy with the size and quantity of the crate.

Rathwood delivery has gone to the dogs since last season.

Instead of fellas hand delivering in their own van, which was excellent service by the way, now a pallet gets landed some day by DPD or the like. I got a random phonecall on the delivery one morning.

In theory, when I looked into it, they have an online system that tells you to expect a delivery, but it doesn't notify you when this is. So you are probably expected to go in and check it every day yourself. God forbid you'd be away or out on business.

I was lucky I had a lad around who could shift it the morning it arrived out of the blue. And it was bone dry that day. Otherwise the pallet would be dropped and the wood could easily get soaked.

Some thing to beware of if you have a Rathwood order coming sometime.

I'm sure they are covered their end, but it could come as a nasty little surprise if you are not paying attention.

I got mine in Galway from nobother.ie. ordered last night and a 1m pallet of oak landed today at 10am for €350 including delivery, and it has fine big healthy looking logs. Delivered right into the shed too, so no hand stacking like last year.

I got a few bags of hardwood kindling too, and some of them would pass for the skinny logs I got last year.

Had a poor experience of Kenny Fuels myself.

Poor quality wood or slow to deliver?

I am finding it hard to move away from Monahans, just expensive but I think there isn't any better out there for cheaper.

will stick with rathwood and wait for an offer, the birch is useful for starting a fire

thinking I might pull the trigger on an order from Monahans for 2m3 of oak for €530 soon. If you clear your cookies a pop up should come up on their website with a 5% discount code by signing up for their newsletter. Not sure if it applies to logs as I havent signed up yet but if it does then it will discount to €505. Which I think is good for oak, Im not seeing much better out there unless I risk buying from Rathwood which I dont think is worth the risk if it needs to be sent back.

Can net bags be cheaper than bulk?

Bought a few bags of kiln dried oak in a reputable local store for €6 each. They averaged 12kg and do seem to be properly dry (though admittedly I have no tester). Good sized logs too.

Cheapest Rathwood bulk kiln dried oak works out at about €7 per 12kg (as per their advertised weights).

Of course the bulk buy includes delivery but I pass this local store regularly and don't mind throwing a few bags in the boot every few weeks.

I don't have great storage facilities for bulk so saves that hassle and the worries about keeping it all dry.

I can’t vouch for their oak, I got ash from them twice last year and I couldn’t fault them. Will probably put in an order with them shortly for the 2m3 of ash. Their prices are never cheap but judging by this thread, the cheaper stuff is cheap for a reason.

This is cheaper by a small bit, I’ve used them and it’s good wood -

(the 10% offer is only for orders under €300 btw)

yeah I bought 2m3 of oak from Monahans in 2020 and 21 and never had a problem with it or their customer service & delivery. In the winter of 22 their prices went up about 15% above the general market rate so that winter bought off Premium Pellets as they had the best prices at the time and their oak was decent.

yeah that would work out €6 cheaper at €499 vs €505. Pity the 10% discount doesnt apply to orders over €300 or it would come in at €450 and that would be a right bargain in the current market.

    FYI

I used Kenny Fuels last year for a pallet of birch and it was fantastic quality and size.

Seriously considering going there again this autumn unless I get a better deal somewhere else.

I ordered 2 x 2.3m Inc free delivery from Kennys. Online order went through fine, delivery address, payment, all good.

Two days later they called me to say they can't deliver 2.3 to my address but can deliver 1.8. They said they would reimburse the difference in price. The did reimburse but minus a €50 delivery charge.

Delivery driver gave about 15 minutes notice on day of delivery. I was not at home so immediately headed back. When I got there I was met with a pile of logs on the ground in front of my and my neighbours drive. The lady next door was blocked from getting out.

Driver had dropped a crate off the back of the lorry spilling the logs.

He helped moving logs so my neighbour could get out but that just left a bigger pile in front of my gate. Didn't help with that, just took off.

Logs themselves were nice and dry and burned well but were all over the place size wise.

Wait, did they charge you €50 because they changing your order? If they did that's out of order, go back to them about it.

    €50 charge?

    Did you file a complaint?

    If it's true of course..

Btw, for anyone else reading. This isn't the experience I had. The driver was excellent and left it as close as he could to the side gate.

Sorry, delivery charge. My mistake. Comment box is awkward.

They don't charge delivery. Now I definitely don't believe it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,765 ✭✭✭Sono

logs all similar size and no dodgy cuts? That’s good to know and something to think about. At the minute it would be between Kenny’s and Monahan’s.

All very similar size. The very odd smaller one but they're ended up being handy for helping to start the fire.

How good is Monahans? I'm probably between the two based on reviews and prices

    Did you file a complaint?

Why were you charged a delivery? I'm the far side of the country and I wasn't..
