Nowhere here did you 'politely ask me to "go away"' you started off your remarks by making snide irrelevant remarks about my profession, then in your next reply, accused me of being on a "strop," followed by more personal flaming & raging at me, as you would put it. You accused me of 'bullying' and told me to 'fuc'k off'

In not but a single message (the last) of yours in that exchange did you maintain remote civility. I'm glad we could clear this up since your earlier claim in this thread made it out like you had been:

I'm not the engineer so you can do the math.

[you] threw a strop when it was pointed out that the claim is not bollocks. You argue for the sake of arguing and bully people out of conversations because you are not capable of conceding a point.

You mean you contacted me via pm so you could continue your bullying. You've had your say now fuc'k off.

I won't tolerate harassment in private either and that's what you did there. I started the first PM yes but to try and understand the point you were trying to convey when we received a 0-point warning under this new rules scheme, nothing in my contact was harassment or a "crusade," I wanted to resolve our misunderstanding the admin viewed as off-topic.

I don't know how to deal with this person.

We can just put each other on ignore now, but I'm happy to have had the opportunity to clarify your mischaracterization of what happened.

The removal of all CA threadbans is genuinely one of the most incomprehensible decicions imaginable as a result of the previous feedback threads.

Its not really, they were getting to hard to manage.

I recall saying as much in deference to 'mod burnout' in the feedback thread. I agree. Both hard for the mods and hard for users of the thread trying to remember who is on it. It would be brilliant if vanilla supported automatically enforced threadbans though or posting permission blacklists on them.

@Babyreignbow @Overheal is this the way threads will go under the rule that they can "meander"? If it is, we're doomed.

So open the prison gates rather than impose harsher sentences? It seems a bit of a cop out that pandered to a few very vocal posters in the feedback threads while giving the fingers to all other posters.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86,683 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

TBF threadbans weren't exactly prison/forum bans and in the inverse they at least have proposed a system where bans going forward would be swifter and harsher (though I think there are some clear problems with the system as I said above, regarding scope and warnings not expiring)

A mod oversaw that thread and not once stepped in when other people were being personally abused and attacked, someone told another poster to F off on one occasion and not once was a warning issued.

I assumed as it was Sunday and people were having a day off but then later when I attempted to address some of the points being made (I hadn't engaged up til that point) a mod interjected because I wasn't using full sentences and gave a pre warning. Now you can call that what you want but at the end of the day it's just bad moderation.

The fact that I bowed out of the thread should have been enough to suggest that I had no interest in arguing and didn't want to fall foul of the rules so instead the poster contacted me via pm and continued the argument there. Zero moderation and zero ability to do anything about it.

I meant how you are causing this thread to meander. 🙄 If I had any interest in that other thread I'd have read it.

I posted in response to the change of moderation and how it resulted in self moderation. I never mentioned the poster but conveyed the nature of the problem. They came here and asked me to post the pm, which I never intended to do.

This is part of the problem, there are posters who are only engaging to bait other posters and there is no moderation for that. If it comes down to self moderation in private then fine, let it be that. But that's not what that poster is doing and the fact he's being permitted says it all.

Every point in the new rules has been broken, every single one of them but it comes down to the personal decision of a mod as to who and how they apply.

Welcome to boards, where you send unsolicited or unwanted PM’s to continue an argument that doesn’t really matter and become belligerent you’re told to fcuk off.

    God I love the internet.

it's a little like being told to not be mean to your stalker when you tell them to leave you alone.

very strange indeed. Besides being totally unnecessary it’s just strange.

Do I get my spake in now, as they say, or hauld my wihst till 2/3rds of the posts are deleted and the thread is closed?

nobody can seem to find these rules written down when they go looking for them so, as I mentioned earlier, issues like these have been a grey area and we are clarifying that they are explicitly not allowed

@Ten of Swords can I speak freely on this?

I tried to find the 'dont be a dick rule' the other week and I couldn't find it anywhere anymore, or the one supposedly about the boards stance on inclusivity.

  • Site Banned Posts: 12,921 ✭✭✭✭suvigirl

I don't believe it's about changing the mind of the poster, it's usually more about pointing out the lies/misinformation/bias/hypocrisy of the poster, for the benefit of other posters.

It's no good ignoring someone spreading lies that others then believe.

I think boards is like the UK at the minute, we have a constitution, it's just not written down all in the one place, or in some cases not written down at all...

Found that 'dont be a dick' rule

    Home› Talkto...› Boards.ie› Boards.ie Help & Feedback› Newbies & FAQ›***READ THIS FIRST - Forum Charter (The Rules) - READ THIS FIRST***

    https://www.boards.ie/discussion/2056307178/read-this-first-forum-charter-the-rules-read-this-first#latest

Although there's only three rules there:

    1. Attack the post, never the poster
    2. Don't use text speak
    3. Don't be a dick

I think the inclusivity bit was just a post in a random Help Desk thread by Niamh:

Yeah that should all be available at the bottom of the web page where Terms of Use is etc. either in the TOU or a link for general rules.

Wow I hadn't realised that. It's disappointing given how slow mods were to intervene on the personal abuse such as you mention.

They do seem to have started to take some people to task, finally, but it's frankly bizarre that a lack of complete sentences should have got a more energetic response than the multiple instances of lies and abuse that were being posted on that thread.

So is this just another moany “have a go at the mods” thread or has it just gone off topic?

It was inevitable. But, PLEASE, it's Meandering not off topic.

No, it's not about the mods. I just can't comprehend how the result of the of that feedback thread is someone, or a number of people, getting the idea that there was a widespread desire for there to be less moderation in the CA forum. I do not believe that idea is true. Far too much credence was given to a minority shouting "mod-bias" at the expense of the majority of posters who if anything wanted more moderation. My first reaction to reading the new rules was…I don't think I want any part of this brave new world that the CA forum is going to become.
