I agree Tommy, very sad to see the lower half of Main Street’s demise. The ridiculous redesigning of parking isn’t helping either. I used to enjoy the infrequent visit to Bradbury’s for coffee and delicious fresh cream cakes. But I’ve stopped now, as it’s very hard to get parking.

On a not unrelated topic, I was driving home last week behind 2 buses. One stopped outside the theatre ( which it’s fully entitled to do ) but no traffic could pass. It took off only for the other to stop too resulting in a build up back past the Church. Ridiculous situation!

That part of Main Street has been struggling for a number of years and its not really down the changes in the layout. The recent event in Town Hall on draft transport plan had some people stating that the proposed changes will ruin Main Street. I interjected and made the point that whatever KCC have been doing for the last 10 years or so wasn't working and something drastic is required. The changes proposed for Main Street (if implemented) would likely help the area. It would introduce proper cycle lanes and make public transport flow better. Traffic problems on Main Street are by and large caused by people using it as a through route (going from one end of town to other) whilst not stopping to shop etc. The consultation remains open for submissions until mid September I think. Any changes to Main Street will only occur when and if second bridge comes on stream and other measures are introduced.

I did note that the old Chartbusters unit was being repainted etc late last week so perhaps something is going in there soon. Also, I heard that Chinese take away is expected to open in the old Arch Bar in the coming months (not sure how true it is).

Saw Chart busters external painted green but nothing done inside. The Chinese in the Arch bar is an old story (maybe 2 years). I don't see any changes there at all passing by.

it’s sad to see that section of town like the way it is. Hopefully something positive is done to rejuvenate the area.

Just back from Tesco’s. I see McDonalds has reopened. All well & good but why didn’t they do something to alleviate the flow off the main road??

Really poor reflection imo on McD’s.

It was always part of my the planning permission, flow in from main road and out to housing estate. Prevents a queue on the housing estate side. Do es nt stop the local travelling crew entering against the flow anyway.

That would have required new planning and the nimbys in the area would have objected, appealed and then probably take a high court action.

In any case, except for a few busy times, there's no major issue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 836 ✭✭✭Roadtoad

Eh, I don't think that's what NIMBY is all about. If you think that traffic and queue is unsuitable for a larger higher capacity road, it's hardly suitable for a smaller road with more residents.

Perhaps customers should park (lots of spots, presently free and available locally) and walk to the restaurant. Theres little need for the drive-through cultural appropriation experience.

Yes. I've never used that drive through - the food would be cold by the time I got home. Much easier just to go in, sit down and eat there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,733 ✭✭✭WishUWereHere

I don’t use McD’s at all. But I hear the sit down area is smaller now compared to the ‘pre fire’ era.

It would be the NIMBYS that don't want a mcdonalds there in the first place. Any major deviation from the original planning would have required new planning and with the current state of planning in this country, some buffoon in west Clare could take a high court action claiming some insect would be affected by some aspect of the design and it would remain a boarded up eyesore for years.

Hence the only way to reopen is to build as per original planning.

Any update on the old Keg pub? I thought that would have been snapped up as i think its ideal location for a restaurant.

Did anyone fix the issue with flooding in the basement. I believe that is what caused it's closure originally. I do remember being down there in the nightclub many moons ago but I could have been wading in water and wouldn't have noticed. The front looks absolutely terrible right now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 66 ✭✭silverview

I've no idea about the flooding issue. That could make anyone think twice before putting a bid in.

What is going into the old office supply shop beside Aldi? I see they put in new windows and seem to working on the inside.

I had a councillor knock on the door last night, opened the door he told me his name, handed me a flyer, turned around & left.
No hello, goodbye, how are You, talk about any matters pertaining to the upcoming election.

Is this the way politics is going? No engagement?
Needless to say, his flyer is in the bin as is his chances of getting my vote.

had that 2 elections ago with Wall the labour candidate. He was putting the “sorry I missed you” letter in my letterbox when I opened the door and he hadn’t knocked and didn’t ring the bell. Had nothing to say and he just turned and walked away.

The person I mentioned isn’t listed as a candidate for the upcoming election:

What’s the point in “canvassing” if You’re not running?

Had a meal tonight in the new Italian, Mani in Pasta. Absolutely fabulous. Starters really good, mains I got mushroom Ravioli which was beautiful and home made desert of Tiramisu. Lovely staff. Great to have a good restaurant back in newbridge. Book in advance because it was really busy. With drinks (beers) about €38 a head for 3 courses. Well worth it.

Damien, where is this located? I agree, we really need a decent restaurant in the town.

Donnie's old place on George's street just down from Dubh. Opposite Kelly's Barber.

We were there Friday night, great meal. Also had a pizza for lunch last week. Big crowd in there & the owner asked us if we knew of anybody (18 or older) looking for work.

Gosh, I must mention this to my Daughter. She used to work in The Hanged Man, which sadly has closed

Plenty of folk canvass on behalf of a candidate they have an affinity with. Jack O'Connor canvassed on behalf of Aina Conway in the LEs for example. I see Alan Dukes out about with Martin Haydon over the weekend

Fair play to team Cathal Berry. They scoured the town of all their posters today, and I even saw a guy with a bucket taking the broken tie-wraps too.

(I never met Cathal, and I'm not part of his or anyone else's political campaign)

Yeah, they may have missed one or two, no need to be pedantic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,942 ✭✭✭GavMan

If Social Media community groups are anything to go by, there seems to be a decent consensus in the town that people don't like posters and don't want to see them erected. I'm sort of the same myself. Don't really like them. They're a bit of a relic of the past but that being said, its usually just a couple of weeks so no biggie.

Though I think it would be good if someone like the Tidy Towns Committee could take the lead and liaise with candidates and maybe come to a consensus on where and how posters could/should be erected in the town? Could there be specific locations? And agreement on saturation (Does Candidate X really need to poster 5 lamp posts in a row, for example)? They've done it really well in Abbeyleix

I disagree with the Abbeyleix attitude of no election posters around the town. I think the posters help get discussions and thoughts going, with self, family and friends.

It would be interesting to know if the turnout is bigger/smaller there than in other similar sized towns, or if the vote spread between big/small candidates is much different.

Just get the posters down efficiently, including removing all the tie-wraps.

    Flashback: Put Willie in!
