    I'd say thats exactly it!

The only way to run pre 2008 cars with the crazy tax on them it seems 😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,016 ✭✭✭McCrack

A proper car at nearly 300k miles, doubt modern electric rubbish would get near that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61,875 ✭✭✭✭unkel

LOL, what are you smoking? Electric cars will last much longer than combustion cars with little to no maintenance either.

The guards don't stamp anything now, those days are long gone, the only way to cancel the arrears is to change ownership.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61,875 ✭✭✭✭unkel

Yes indeed. That's why I called "keeping it in the family" the new form of evading motor tax

My personal favourite is registering the car in a friends name and claiming you just bought it and haven’t received the new logbook to tax it yet😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 155 ✭✭M3CS

Anyone doing that may as well not have an insurance policy, save themselves a few more quid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,345 ✭✭✭User1998

Driving other cars extension would cover it. I have motor trade insurance anyway so I don’t have to worry about that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61,875 ✭✭✭✭unkel

Not quite the same though, is it? Get caught by the guards with no tax and they will likely believe the "dog ate my homework" excuse @User1998 mentioned. Worst case scenario a €80 fine or whatever it is. Cause an accident without insurance and the injured party's insurer can sue you and pursue you for money for the rest of your life.

Speaking of Audis and not paying tax …

How about this 2.7 A6 Avant with a fresh test and couple months tax?

The point I was making is that most insurance policies require the car to be registered in the name of the insured person. If the car was initially insured in their name but they later changed the registered owner to their mate as a way to avoid paying motor tax then their insurance would be void if an accident did happen or if a guard actually took a few minutes to look into it.

Regarding the tax, depending on how long it's out the guard could seize the car and then you'd have to cough up for the arrears, towing fee, release fee as well as the fine and the time and hassle involved in getting around to all these places while you're without your car. An €80 fine is actually one of the best case scenarios.

A driving other cars extension wouldn't cover you for the situation you described where the car is yours but it's registered in your mate's name. Whose name and personal details are on the insurance policy? If it's yours then the insurance would be void. If you go through a checkpoint and tell them it was your mate's car and you've just bought it that day then they'll probably ask you to produce the insurance certificate. When you give them that they'll see that you've been insured on the car for 6 months or whatever, despite you claiming you had just bought it off your mate.

Anyway, if you've got a trade policy then you shouldn't need to worry about the car you're driving being taxed either I presume?

It's most commonly changed between husband and wife. Both have by definition (marriage) an insurable interest. In common language: they both own the car. This is perfectly fine from an insurance point of view. Most Irish people don't know the fine legal / insurance points of this, but they damn sure know if they do the new 3 months on 3 months of regime, nobody will bite them. Cute hoors, you couldn't blame them as they get away with it! 😂

A fine lump of a car! I'm tempted to get an A4 Estate as my next car but

folk are still looking for mad money for them. I'll carry on with the C5 for the minute.

I might be in the market for a banger as my bangernomics 2006 Honda Civic I bought 6 years ago for €1800 might now be not worth repairing after failing an NCT on severe corrosion. Sad day for me as that was a great bargain, very little trouble and cheap driving for 6 years.

Anyway, I know the market has changed recently but are there any automatic bangers going these days?

Toyota Prius? You should be able to pick up a 2008 model with cheap tax for under €3k.

I have a 12 Qashqai, slightly different configuration... I have the standard Qashqai (the Qashqai +2 is about 8" longer and has an extra row of child seats in the boot). I have the 1.6 (130bhp) diesel with 4wd. Its raucous but the extra bit of power is nice. The 1.5 diesel is only 110bhp but is quieter I'd say. Both are sourced from Renault and are capable of putting up big mileage. (Just check on DD to see the kind of intergalactic mileages some of them have).

I have 240k kms on the clock and have had no real problems. (DPF gave trouble, but that happens with all post 08 diesels that are not consistently doing long runs). Everything works as it should which is a first for any car I have ever owned. Thats just my experience anyway.

Herself bought a Qashqai about 18 months ago as it ticked a lot of boxes for her but still held on to her Alfa Romeo 159 😂

The one she got is a high spec with leather interior, pano roof etc and in that length of ownership, she had a starter motor fail and for last years NCT, the rear trailing arms on the suspension were absolutely rotten! No idea how it went through a year before, but in any case, they were changed and not a cheap job either, but apart from that she loves it. Decent driving position, lots of room especially with seats down for carrying large items etc and a miser on fuel. It's the 1.5 version. Think it has about 250k kms on it now but it's actually due in on Saturday for the NCT again and she has no plans to move it on as overall she's very happy with it. Just be careful regarding the rear suspension as we found out when she had that issue that it's quite a common problem with them, so much so, that if you look around on Donedeal etc you'll see that rear trailing arms for Qashqais are a thing. I know it's not easy to inspect underneath when buying a car, but definitely have a look at that area to be sure there's nothing lurking or maybe they have previously been sorted

[EDIT]Just noticed the one you are looking at is an Irish car, hers is a UK/NI import, so whether that made any difference on the amount of corrosion on the arms, I'm not sure [/EDIT]

Have a look at this video from about 4mins 40 seconds in

I wouldn't be a fan of the "Cashcai". Seen too many horror stories about them.

They are a good car "IF" they are looked after and maintained correctly. But the problem

with them is that they are bought and driven by women who get in them and think they

are Victoria Beckham in a Range Rover who allow their kids to have their breakfast, lunch

and dinner and tea in them, never have them serviced or maintained, then when they fail the

NCT spectacularly, the owners refer to them as heaps of junk that gave nothing but trouble.

If you can find a nice one that hasn't been abused by someone like I've mentioned above they

can be a pretty good car. The Renault Kadjar is based on these Qashqai and they are still selling

in big numbers. Do your homework on one you are looking at, check the service history is all

present and correct, see can you get hold of the old NCT lists to see if and what they have failed

on and you will know. If it's had a failure sheet the length of both arms each year, you know it's

been owned by someone who doesn't care for their vehicles.

I was looking for one for my other half a few years ago but gave up in the end because there

was too many rough ones out there. Each one I viewed was wrecked inside and out and mechanically

bad. But I am sure there are 1 or 2 out there worth buying, finding one that isn't priced stupidly

    is the thing.

This one doesn't look too bad but the photos are not great. Based in Easky in Sligo which is beside

the sea so could be rotten.

God be with the good old days when this thread was full of E10 Corollas, K11 Micras, W124s and 1.4tdi A2s for less than €1k!

    The world has changed.

Found some Jap petrol reliability for lugging around whatever you need to lug.

Short on test but what can you do!

"But the problem with them is that they are bought and driven by women who get in them and think they are Victoria Beckham in a Range Rover"

It's this kind of statement that makes boards such compulsive reading.

Why, does your wife drive one?😂

I don’t disagree with his statement at all

"see can you get hold of the old NCT lists to see if and what they have failed on"

Is it possible for someone not in the trade to do this? I've never heard of it before, it would be extremely useful when looking at used cars though. You could tell a decent amount from what the car failed previous NCTs on.

I always keep any sheets in the glove box of my bars, fails and passes. At least then when I'm selling a car, I can show potential buyers the issues and the work carried out to fix them.
