It has turned into a very nice afternoon in Galway.

Autumn for me is about the harvest, sunsets and the tree colours. I have a friend who gets up very early these September mornings every year to gather mushrooms. I'd be a bit nervous about picking the right ones but he knows his stuff to be fair.

A high of 15.8C here near Tralee, 15.2C now, bright and fresher feeling in the breeze than earlier, bit of a nip in short sleeves this evening. Shadows being cast much earlier now, it was quite dark by about 20.45 last night during the rain, just 3.5mm here, looks to have been quite wet in the East today.

God what an absolutely miserable day, horrendous traffic on the commute in morning and evening.

I had to laugh at national slowdown day, trust me no one was doing above 20km on M50 or N4 today!

clear skies now typical after such a gloomy day

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,510 ✭✭✭highdef

Ah it was only the Eastern half of the further that had gloom all day. The other half had bright and sunny spells. If the latest charts verify, temperatures could be approaching the mid 20s in many Midland areas this Friday and Saturday! What could go wrong? 😏

A fairly chilly start to the day. Damp also. Made the mistake of walking the dog through some fields. Socks are ringing, toes are frozen.

WOWSERS, It's cold out there this morning. Hands are numb back from a walk. 10c, but feels a lot cooler than that in the fresh breeze.

Ah lads where is the nice back to school weather, heavy rain showers every day not a hope of getting clothes dry.

Grim start to September, some poster in here predicted a heat wave lmao. Think I’ll be booking a sun break in October.

    it’s cold and wet today.

I’d love to see the stats on that one appledrop. There’s been as many bad weeks as good ones I’d guess on the kids return to school.

it's freezing if you're on a bike, would need hat and gloves. can't believe i was sunbathing a couple of days ago. at least friday looks like it'll be a fine day.

Decided to go for a walk in bright sunshine and at about 6.15 there was an almighty deluge, I was lucky to get shelter under a tree. The showers are very sporadic in nature today, but when they arrive, they deliver!

As you say we'd need to see Stats, but I would say there have been more good than bad. Being a teacher, the return to school over the years is something that really stands out in my memories. And until the Irish climate nose dived over the last 2-3 years, I think Septembers were generally the better month of the May-October period. I remember often being grateful for warm, dry weather, helping us all settle back into the first term and shorten the winter a little. I even rememeber claiming that I'd prefer better Septembers to Julys and that was generally the pattern. Not all of September and not quite every year, but enough that I remember. All gone to pot these last few years though. You really would hope these years are just a very bad blip and not the start of a long term pattern.

this is the +120 chart on Sept 1 for Friday, looks great with high pressure building over us but it isn’t going to happen … just shows an accurate forecast isn’t possible beyond five days, not a lot different from 50 years ago I suppose?

maybe it’s time to start getting seriously worried about that N Atlantic ‘blob’

Intense showers here this evening in Meath.

Hope there a few dry days ahead in forecast. Well at least for a public transport commute tomorrow lol

That's it I surrender the heating is now on.

I wonder are the models struggling with the changing climate?

Though you wouldn't think it here this summer, the world has never been hotter in recent history. Most of Europe had its hotter summer and/or August on record.

Parts of north west Europe, which had a cool summer, had a record breaking May.

I wonder do the models need to be tweaked?

Mind you, they've never been perfect. It's just we notice it more for good weather.

If this comes to pass on Friday, I'll be a happy man! Similar conditions for you in Carrick, @Dazler97

Another cool, damp morning. As per the norm, it's grey, very grey.

Anyhow, weekend looks good, but looks to be relatively cool next week, but alas, i'll be basking in Sunshine in Costa Adeje for a few weeks. Might take a trip down memory lane and see what Veronicas(was a dump in Las Americas) is like these days

Absolutely brutal week so far here in the East, Monday was horrendous and yesterday wasn't much bettter, doesn't look like there will be much of an Indian Summer this September.

veronicas, ha, i spent 2 weeks there every night in 97/98 when i was 16/17, we thought it was the pinnacle of nightlife in europe. linekars and all those sh*tholes.

parts of the island are supposed to be beautiful though, especially up north, i'm jealous.
