I actually had a look at that before posting but the 790 tax and likely expensive parts (?) was putting me off it tbh. I'll mention it to the missus all the same though

Edit: any idea what would those be like reliability-wise?

Would you chance electric? Especially if the drives are short, electric seems to be by far the cheapest way to get around if you can charge at home.

Turns out my yoke now falls into this category. I've been offered 1200-1500 by the dealers on trade in. Now, for that money there is zero point trading it in because it doesn't make any inroads on the price of even the cheapest replacement. Can it really be so worthless?

    2008 BMW 520d

    84k miles/133k new money

NCT & Tax on it til next summer

I can't find anything online with the similar mileage so no obvious comparisons

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,988 ✭✭✭✭User1998

On a 16 year old car your probably talking €500 or so more than a high mileage example

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,718 ✭✭✭Mad_Mike

Im assuming if it's 2008, it's the new lower road tax and not the standard 710 for a 2 litre diesel?

Has the timing chain been done? Kinda half interested in one at the moment. Looking at going for something similar but just can't decide what to go for

    What's the condition?

    Any pictures?

    I may be interested.

Car looks OK but usual sh!te ad from a dealer. No real pic of the state of the battery. From the distant pic it looks like about 6 or 7 bars left. Not sure what mileage you'd get out of that.

    T.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,953 ✭✭✭MacDanger

Was considering something like that actually. Say it's a 24kw model with 7 bars left (I'm assuming that's 24 * 0.7 = 16.8kw?), what would be the approximate range on that for summer driving taking it handy enough? Is it possible to get the batteries refurbished?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,126 ✭✭✭rn

Its possible. Have seen it done on YouTube, especially for Prius batteries. But I don't know enough about them and I guess you're mixing old cells with new cells so I've my doubts it's a viable long term fix.

It's interesting to see the first of the electrics making into bangernomics territory - personally I doubted they would when they arrived on scene. Some of the leafs have multiples of milage than that red one I posted. Which is also promising to see.

I think Nissan have a scheme where you can trade in the battery for a full new one. But you'd have to be fully bought into the car and electric lifestyle for it.

I'd be keeping it until it was completely scrap. Unless it is at that stage already

or breaking your heart with problems.

Dealers don't want old cars on their lots, especially main dealers soo they want to discourage you from considering the trade in option and instead buy straight (ideally straight with finance provided by them) to maximise their profits.

You should get €3000 for that car privately as long as its straight and in fair condition

(of course, you will probably be dealing with the baseball cap brigade and/or the cultured minorities)

3k is nearly as useless as 1500 in a world where a 2022 Rav4 (missus wants) is 40k or 2022 520d is 45k+. Better to keep as a second car for the house. The point I was making is that everything I learned about cars is now defunct. "Old" low mileage clean cars keep their value turns out to be nonsense. Some of the dealers didn't even check if it had tax/nct. They literally don't care

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,216 ✭✭✭gussieg

Ive got two actual bangers lucky to get 500 for both, but yet, loath to let them go too. Was thinking electric banger but if anything does go wrong, will have no clue where to turn with them to get it going again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,339 ✭✭✭✭unkel

Hardly call it a banger, a low mileage MG-TF with tax and test asking just €2k

I owned one for a few years and these are fantastic driving cars. RWD and mid rear engine. The K-series engine is nicely free revving too. And it's the only car I have owned where I could open or close the roof, while sitting in the driver's seat

It is €2,000 for a reason. About €1,000 over priced too in my opinion.

Had one and hated it, roof leaked, suspension leaked, you could never lock it

or the alarm would go off. I never locked it, hoping someone would steal it.

Head gasket went (par for the course with these) It would randomly blow fuses

and stop in the road. A dreadful car. I wouldn't sell one to my mother in law.

It's the reason I will never own another british car. My heart went out to the poor

bugger who bought mine and was driving it from Meath to Donegal. I often wonder

    if it ever made it.

A complete heap of sh 1t.

Head gasket going on the K-series is not par for the course. You need to be aware of the issue and keep a close eye on coolant temp, that's all. I drove the bejaysus out of my one, it never missed a beat. Fantastic car to drive and yes the hydragas suspension needs to be pumped about once a year, I had that done by the original Rover / MG garage in Blanchardstown for €45 iirc. Above car has steel suspension, so that is not an issue

I never lock or put on the alarm on any convertible I ever had. I prefer if someone has a good look inside by opening a door rather than by cutting the roof

And yes I grant you, these cars leak even when brand new. So do many other soft roof convertibles. I just used those €1.50 moisture traps from Dealz to counter that

I worked for MG Rover for a while and seen engines being replaced under warranty because of

the head gasket going. Not all were bad in fairness. Had a fair few dealings with Ryan's over

the years. Pat was the workshop foreman there, an intelligent and helpful man.

If I had a big garage with somewhere to store cars, I "might" be tempted to buy the TF you

posted. It does look a bit rough though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,339 ✭✭✭✭unkel

Yeah it's no beauty queen. It is more one for trashing. And in fairness the one I bought (with tax and 2 years NCT) was only €500 so I had very little to lose (as opposed to someone buying one brand new, they weren't all that cheap)

And I wonder all the time what nice cars I would buy and keep if I had a big shed 😀

I've had 3 of them (Mercs) not as old as that one, but I know people who swear by them, and if I was in the market for a cheap car, I'd take a chance on it. A friend has a 1995 E-Class 1.8 petrol and travels all over the place with it (even takes it abroad for holidays) And it has high mileage on it too. But its never let him down.

If the C4 could be got for €1500 it would be ok.

If the 2011 Focus could be got for a few hundred less I would take it.

Check the FSH of the Focus.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,718 ✭✭✭Mad_Mike

The 2007 Focus I'd remove right away from your list anyway. Its 4 years older than the 2011 one and very rough and only 350 euros less. Both of the Corollas are 2005 and a lot of the Corollas of that era are starting to fail NCT on rust issues underneath. The engine/gearbox etc will generally run for years, but a lot of the Japanese cars start to suffer with rust once they hit that kind of age

Personally I'd probably go for the Ibiza, but depends on size car you want and how much driving etc. It has a fresh NCT, so you know it has just passed within the last week and looks fairly well minded. They also said they have a service history and they're saying they are open to any offers. I'd imagine if you drove it and it's to your liking, if you had €1,250 in your pocket, you'd drive it away hopefully!

@MacDanger - what sort of daily driving will you do in your second car? If it is small, did you consider an EV like a Nissan Leaf? I presume you own a house with a driveway?

These cars are extremely reliable, don't need any maintenance and are very cheap to charge on night rate electricity. It will have a lower total cost of ownership than any petrol / diesel car, even if you got that car for free

Yeah, I've been looking at some of those (following a recommendation earlier in the thread) but my wife isn't too keen on it considering the range at this sort of budget is typically 50-60km so maybe we just need to up the budget a bit to get closer to a 100km range

Edit: Mostly it's short distances but occasionally, it might be up to 70-80km round trips

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,339 ✭✭✭✭unkel

Yeah that round trip is a bit much (in winter) for most EV bangernomics cars.

NCT passed 3 days ago. Big mileage, but my own 2004 one has slightly more and has never missed a beat. These will go on forever if kept serviced any way right at all. Asking €1550, but I'm sure it could be got for a bit less

Keep it in the family. The new 3 months on - 3 months off getting it stamped by the guards way of taxing cars. Only in Ireland 😏
