    Hi All,

Does anyone know if being mildly colour blind prevent you from joining An Garda Siochana? Or if anyone knows of colour blind Garda who have progressed into the job?

I have very recently undergone my medical.

What did the medical assessor say? Did he sign of that you were medically certified?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11 EvanBarr123

They never said anything, no indication of a pass or fail. All the rest of the test that were done came back perfectly fine.

it will probably go to the Garda chief medical officer and he will make a decision.

hi does anybody know do they check your medical history with your doctor or is it only there own medical review they do on you? Or do they do both?

Does anyone know if you have high blood pressure, but its managed by medication to the accepted level, will you fail the medical because of it ?

    01pm

any1 called yet from this years selection. I heard that there was 3 lads in there 40s that started. Is this true?

Can anyone tell me if they can check your medical history with your doctor? I don't see anything on the medical form that explicitly gives them permission to do this. They ask for you GP's name and number but that's it?

I’m not sure if they can. But I wouldn’t fail to declare something, as it could come up at a later date . If you fail to declare something major and they find out , they might disqualify you , same for vetting.

Hi, I’ve been following other threads and some candidates from 2022 campaign only getting called to templemore now , I’ve been told approx 18 months before you get to templemore and that’s if you’re called , there’s hundreds of successful applicants.
if those 3 49yr olds did start maybe they were reserves already , but it’s definitely not the norm.
what I did Wonder was if you were oom 600 in 2022 campaign surely someone oom 20 in 2024 campaign would be called quicker….i just don’t know how it works

OOM only really gets your vetting started quicker. If the 2024 OOM 600 has his vetting done and all the boxes tickets and the 2022 guy is still waiting on checks , they’ll send in the 2024 guy to fill the intake.

I believe the lower the number , the better 👍

On the day of your medical you’ll fill in more forms where you are asked to give permission for your own GP for disclosure.

Has anyone any idea of what blood pressure reading is deemed as too high in the medical. Like, if you are under 139/89, you should be ok.

    Hi everyone,

I recently passed my interview for a position with the Garda and am currently awaiting instructions for the vetting process. When I was younger, I was caught with drugs, but I wasn't convicted. I'm a bit concerned about how this might affect my application.

A while ago, I applied for the defense forces and successfully passed their vetting process without any issues. I'm wondering if the Garda vetting process is similar and if my past will impact my chances.

Has anyone been in a similar situation or have any insights on how this might play out?

Thanks in advance for any advice

just a few things for applicants to consider when applying for the job and need to go into it with eyes open:

Pension: many people join thinking the pension is great. we get fed this from our parents who are basing it on their era from their age. anyone joining post 2013 the pension is disgraceful. you will get about 215-230 euro a week when you reture at 60, which is in line with the old age pension which everyone in none state jobs get. when you join a station you will quickly be told of this and advised to pay into your own AVC to supplement your poor pension. this fact is kept very quiet as it no doubt will affect peoples thinking when applying for this job and correctly so. the lump sum payment at retirement has also been slashed since 2013. nobody realises this and isnt publicised about in the media nor will you find it marketed by them as a reason to join as it doesnt exist anymore. people are walking in blind thinking great pension setting me up for life

work life balance - won't be able to plan things for your days off due to required court appearances/ taking calls on work on days off also and also if you are sent to a call at the end of your last shift and arrest you have to work on into your day off to tie it up.

if you go for specialist unit in time have to go on 6 on 4 off roster driving childcare and travel costs up.

annual leave cut from 35 days to 29 days which sounds good but bear in mind general public get bank holidays off on to of their annual leave whereas we do not.

Work: I appreciate many have wanted to do this since childhood and want it desperately for whatever is their reasons. if its for the day to day work then be prepared that it is all paper work orientated. everything is reports, duplication and beurocracy which snows everyone under. helping decent people is actually rare who for the majority will rarely come into contact with them in their lives but to get passports sorted etc. you will mainly be refereeing domestics with people who call you to get one over on an ex partner due to child custody or if its current partners they will later withdraw complaints but for it to start again further down the line, mental health persons which you are not trained to deal with, frauds which you will be beating your head off a wall trying to progress but cant due to banks delaying you and outside of this any other crimes tend to be between one low life against another one or wrestling with drunk lads on cold rainy nights out facing being attacked.

morale is rock bottom in the job, people are resigning in their droves as they see the realities and the work load expected of them, the day of staying in the job until retirement is in the past now which used to be the case for sure. i know many will view this as overly negative summary of the job so what i would advise is before following through with it talk to others you know in the job and hear what they have to say first. i dont know anyone in it that would recommend it anyways.

Easy to know you're on the outside looking in. In for a big shock when you eventually hit your dublin station lad

Not one stat to back up your repeated claims. You'll never make detective anyway.

Last year, 1% of Garda staff resigned against the national average of 11%. Go and inform yourself with the facts I presented in this thread, https://www.boards.ie/discussion/comment/122777810

Does anyone know what suitability checks mean and if there’s near the end of the vetting?
