Oh forgot - probably hands down best was "Nobody Speak" about the Hulk Hogan trial - except it wasn't about that at all. It was showing how deep pockets in the US in particular are trying to silence the free press. It was unbelievable. Except it's true.

The Fyre Festival one, if you want to watch arseholes making ejits out of arseholes.

A welcome repeat on BBC4 next Wednesday 14th August of the marvellous:

The Fairytale Castles of King Ludwig II with Dan Cruickshank

"To follow knowledge like a sinking star..." (Tennyson's Ulysses)

May have been mentioned before "Corridors of Power: Should America Police The World", currently being shown on BBC. Basically looks at the various warzones around the world over the last 30 years or so and how little was learned each time by America and other nations in when and how to react to civilians being massacred. I wasn't aware of exactly how many killings and the scale of what went on, particularly in the Balkans and Africa, complete madness what humans can do to each other in the name or religion and hatred.

Recently aired on BBC4, a searing documentary using the speeches and interviews of James Baldwin.
(There is also a lot of content on BBC Sounds to mark the centenary of Baldwin's birth).

Narrated by actor Samuel L. Jackson, the film explores the history of racism in the United States through Baldwin's recollections of civil rights leaders Medgar EversMalcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr., as well as his personal observations of American history. It was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 89th Academy Awards and won the BAFTA Award for Best Documentary.

For complete madness on Channel 4 "The Man With A Penis On His Arm", I watched this late one night with a few cans on me, basically a punter loses the function of his manhood and a doctor decides it would be a good idea to grow a replacement one temporarily on his arm until it gets developed enough to attach it back to where it should be. It's a full, proper piece including bell end, he then later in the show has it attached and is happy as Larry.

I had to actually watch it again the next day sober to see it was actually real, it's completely off the wall but seems to have worked a charm according to the recipient.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was unintentionally hilarious. The main arm guy and his mate, two raving alcoholics, were comedy gold! I lost it when he was showing the camera man the hassle he had using the cooker because he kept burning the damn thing!😅 It was like an episode of Brass Eye.

The Cable that Changed the World was on RTE Monday I thought it was very good. I knew a few bits about the cables landing in Valentia and found it very interesting. Funny bit was conspiracy theory heads back in 1850s say it was fake after things didn't pan out first time. Well worth a watch to see how far we come on telecommunication.

That's on BBC1 this evening, BBC2 on Thursday evening, and repeated on RTÉ 1 on Saturday lunchtime.

The Gullspang Miracle, Storyville BBC iPlayer is an odd one.

Norwegian sisters buy apartment in Sweden, discover apartment seller is the image of their older sister who committed suicide in the 80s…

DNA tests, family reunions, class and religious divides abound then outright hostilities ensue on camera as the dead 80s sister suicide begins to look like murder.

PS It's not action packed (they are all pensioners in it), but interesting enough

A thing isn't what it says it is.

A thing is what it does.

Kyle: the gunman who divided america.

Excellent watch, on sky documentaries I think

Wendel on YouTube. He does interesting documentaries on issues in England and Ireland such as immigration homelessness and he does another about the division in northern Ireland.

Albert Brooks Defending my life it's very funny interesting if you like 70s 80 tv comedy film history Beckham documentary it's funny even if you don't like soccer someone paid him millions to go to America to start a soccer league unfortunately you can't build a soccer league with only a few famous players when most Americans don't care about soccer

The Kingdom: The World’s Most Powerful Prince

Muhammed Bin Salman Saudi crown Prince... a great watch & I wondered whilst watching it do the people who go there to work fully understand that the rules of the country can change overnight.

Yes that was excellent, much better than expected and really enjoyed the backstory too. I had no idea his Dad was 100% commited to communism. Enjoyed his story of going to the US for the first time and his Dad telling him it was all a set up!

Quite amazing that we've heard next to nothing in the news about the power struggles within Ukraine. Seems quite significant and would certainly lead to questions about the direction the country will take once the war ends.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,675 ✭✭✭50HX

Yeah it wouldn't suit the main stream media narrative to shed more light on ukraines own internal struggles....anything negative may reduce support for them I suppose

Turning Point: The Bomb and the Cold War on Netflix is superb.

Anyone watching Unlocked on Netflix? Two episodes in and its so addictive.

The dynamic between the younger inmates and the old stagers, and the various points of tension, is very interesting.

    True Story is my boy.

There's been a great series on Muhammad Ali showing on TG4 for the last few months. It's shown at midnight so it's probably been missed by most people.

It charts his whole life from a child onwards. It's up to his fight in Manila now so it must be nearly finished. Some great footage of all his fights and discussion of his religion, relationships ect and interviews with all the people in his life.

It's well worth a watch. I presume it's on the Player.

I'm liking the kinda suggested topics at the top of youtube, probably been there for ages but only really noticed it about 2 days ago. It's based on your likes the algorithm spat out this doc on the Rainbow Bar/Grill in LA under "history" for me.

Famous venue for up and coming rock bands in 80's and 90's, real good nostalgia buzz. Slash, Gene Simmons, Micky Dolenz etc all appear. Lemmy seemed to pretty much live there in later years, he is very frail in it.

Full title on YT is The Rainbow - A Documentary About the Historic Rainbow Bar on Hollywood's Sunset Strip.
