It was on a radio show so no links unfortunatley. The general point was that car drivers spend the most of all shoppers, per capita.

Although they represent a relativley small percentage of shoppers by headcount, they still account for around 25% of retail spend on average, but in some stores they can contribute as much as 40% of total spend.

They don't. And you have nothing to back up your repeated claim. Do better.

Anyway, sure I'll walk by Arnotts at the weekend to see how the car park is keeping the city in the black. Good luck.

Pardon my ignorance but who or what is a ‘Karen’?

The kind of person who demands to speak to the manager.

What that has to do with bus gates on the quays, who knows.

It's a disaster. O'Connell Street is even busier for buses than the Quays and yet that's where they've sent the cars. Why didn't they stick to the original plan and sent the cars up Jervis Street.

Because Arnotts Car Park. That's the only reason really.

Though it's not like they've "sent the cars" there. There's very few reasons someone would go down all the way Bachelor's Walk to turn left to OCS and then Parnell. I suspect a number of drivers who are doing that will find a different route, probably Jervis, over the next few days.

A number of work vans ignoring the ban this morning but overall much quieter and a more pleasant environment for pedestrians and cyclists. I've spoken to colleagues and they haven't noticed any significant improvement to outbound bus journey times but some improvement to inbound. The main benefit seems to be the more pleasant public space around the bridge. It was possible this morning to have a normal conversation without shouting, same yesterday afternoon.

The diversion does really need to be at jervis. If that means giving selfridges eff off money, then so be it.

It is only day #4 of this.

People will change but that takes time - months rather than days.

As with any change, it’s apparent that there is a significant cohort of the population who just don’t follow this kind of news story, or who just don’t notice signage and will end up at O’Connell Bridge regardless.

While I agree that the measures are too limited, there are political realities, particularly a general election within the next seven months, that mean that this is going to be a drawn out process unfortunately.

Is there any consequence for ignoring the ban and driving on. Anyone been pulled for it like?

Gardai were pulling cars over the other day, but having a quiet word, rather than fining them. Over time that will, I would hope, change, but at the outset you do want to bring people with you with this sort of thing.

Do people not spell check their posts? Even a little bit!

Time is contagious, everyone is getting old.

Strange policing at the revised junctions. Not a Garda in sight, but staffed by what appear to be Dublin City Council employees in high visibility jackets trying to direct cars away.

At O'Connell Bridge, I saw one car skipping into the bus lane from Burgh Quay to Aston Quay, nearly running over one of the Council staff. Bizarre stuff.

I drove up Bachelors Walk to get to Princes Street. I too noticed one bloke standing in the river side of the road pointing to non PV’s to turn left. However like You I saw no Gardaí but did see 5-6 non PV’s drive into Eden Quay. What’s the point of making new rules if there’s no enforcement?

In fairness, OCS was almost empty except for PV’s so I was going around Parnell Square within 25 minutes( had a delivery down Henry Street ).

I suspect that for now they are just trying to inform and encourage people to do the right thing, before they start sending the Gardai out handing out fines and penalty points.

Given all the media attention this got, they probably don't want to go full on enforcement on it until folks have gotten a chance to get use to it and found the alternative paths.

The same happened when the College Green bus gate was put in place.

It seemed that the ban was more widely ignored this morning, I guess word has gotten out that it isn't enforced.

Not only is the ban being ignored but there were cars blocking the yellow boxes around the bridge and then ploughing through the pedestrian lights.

Sounds like a totally normal day in Ireland. 😕

Until there's active ANPR cameras enforcing the rules then the diversions will be ignored, just like all the private cars in Bus lanes and on cycle lanes etc…

Wasn't anpr supposed to be rolled out last year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,324 ✭✭✭Tenzor07

Probably delayed due to "GDPR concerns"… I mean I remember being fined for entering a road in a rural town in Italy years ago..snapped by the camera in place, fine went to the carhire company and on to me.

The reality is that most people do abide by the changes and that does mean that they make a difference.

Sure, some people ignore the College Green bus gate, and some will ignore these.

But enough people do abide by them to still make a difference.

I can remember the long lines of general traffic from Parnell Square to Grafton Street - that isn’t there anymore - sure there are some cars ignoring the bus gates, but behaviour of the majority has changed.

I saw the same this morning. The council person "directing" traffic must have just been told to wave his arm when the light goes green. There was no real attempt to direct traffic in the true sense. Pretty much did not acknowledge anyone continuing onto the quays.

Probably more to do with the fact that the area around by college green is frequently jammed up with Luas and Busses than relying on the good will as you say of people driving private/commercial vehicles .. Still think cameras are a great idea to free up valuable Garda resources..

If there were gdpr concerns then there would be no toll on the M50. And there would be no other anpr systems in all of Europe and the UK which all have identical gdpr legislation

Those cameras have strict limits applied to them and what they can record and why… This was on the eFlow site too:

"Due to GDPR, we are unable to show the number of journeys taken by your vehicle. You can contact us to check if your vehicle has any outstanding journeys."
