500: Internal server error

the 500 internal server error is just a very generic way of the server saying "It doesn't work" but not revealing any information to potential hackers. It's difficult to diagnose on its own.

I would agree with fcrossen to check the logs, it's the only way of finding out what the error really is

The WordPress website should have emailed the website administrator listing the error message. If not, you will need to get access to the server error logs (generally via your hosting control panel). The error message will list the file where the problem occurred and why.

Once you know this it should help you figure out what is going on. Or post the error message here.

"in text editor" as in literally just a text editor widget on elementor that Im trying to change the text it displays on the homepage but it wont allow me to save the changes, just keeps saying 500 server error , Im at a loss of what to do as Im not any bit of an expert on this stuff, im just learning as I go

Or can you try to create a new post or page and not use Elementor. Can that be published and edited?

Is WordPress and all the plugins up to date?

Then there's likely something borked in either your WordPress install or the plugin itself. Is this a business website that someone else created? I'd suggest getting on to your developer

But did you create this website from scratch, or are you messing around with something that someone else created? If the latter, I'd suggest getting on to the original developer, they will have access to logs on the server and know how it was originally set up

Who installed WordPress? Who installed Elementor?

Everything else is working perfectly, allows me to make changes and customise all other pages just fine. Only seems to be an issue when I try to change anything on the homepage

that rules out plugin issues etc. Go into html mode, cut out all the code and paste it in a doc somewhere for safe keeping, then revert back to Visual, put in a few words and see if you have the same error. if not, then something in the original content is causing the issue. If there's still a problem, check you arent using a different page template etc etc. If there is no problem, then put in the original code bit by bit, checking each time, until the error occurs. the last bit of the original page you added would have the issue
