Interesting on the last word yesterday Cal Thomas suggesting trump should ditch JDV immediately and replace him with a military nomination, as vance is a vote coster.

The military aspect is very concerning, I am seriously worried how the military will behave over the election.

Seems like a sound pick in terms of shoring up poll numbers in Pennsylvania, but the trouble is what the pick does for her numbers elsewhere. On his latest podcast, Michael Moore bemoans the idea of picking Shapiro as one of the things the Democrats would have to do wrong in order for Trump to win, basing this on how it would badly suppress the Arab-American vote in Michigan due to the picking of Shapiro being interpreted as tacit support for Israel and their actions in Palestine, which could in turn lose the Democrats that state.

Additionally, as much as there has never been a woman POTUS, there has never been a Jewish POTUS or VP. If identity matters that much to Americans, it may be a bit too much identity in one package for some of them to swallow, though it's going to be a very hard factor to fully quantify if it indeed is one.

It doesn’t look like a wall. Rather a tall fence. And why would Congress allocate money for it? I remember Trump saying several times at 2016 rallies that Mexico would pay for it. In the 4 years of Trump’s administration Mexico didn’t pay a Peso according to BBC Reality Check 12 January 2021.

Cautiously optimistic, let's see how the next 90 days go.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,580 ✭✭✭✭briany

And to get this straight, many of the migrants would have travelled for hundreds of miles over all kinds of terrain. By what logic would anyone think the wall is a particularly imposing barrier if they knew the kind of obstacles and physical trials that many of of the migrants had to face just to get to that point?

Does Moore seriously believe that the majority of Arab-Americans in Michigan would vote for Trump if Shapiro was on the ticket?

    I very much doubt that.

The reality is no dual candidacy is going to tick every box.

“Smugglers are sawing through new sections of Trump’s border wall” using common power tools during Trump’s administration to smuggle illegal aliens and drugs according to the Washington Post 2 November 2019.

IId Be more worried about how they behave after the election. That said Trimp's no longer commander-in-chief and I dont think a military coup is on the cards.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

He seemed to be saying that it would just suppress the Arab American vote of that state , where there is supposed to be a high concentration of such people and it could come back to hurt her if Michigan is a squeaker.

I'm not saying that Moore is correct. It's just a thought on the matter.

In a shocking turn of events, the people who make millions of dollars from smuggling people to the US border have the resources to quickly and covertly cut through sections of the wall. Who could have known?

That's the juggling decision which has to be made. I think you have to take a risk with Michigan. If it's a state that you think needs to be shored up/given extra care, then the whole campaign is likely in trouble anyway. Other than Trump by less than .25% in 2016, it's veered from solid Dem to marginal Dem since 1992. So I don't think you should base a VP pick around what effect it might have in Michigan.

The reality is, the vast vast vast majority of Americans couldn't give 2 flying fúcks about Gaza.

It's sad but true. Half of them couldn't point even roughly to it on a globe.

They might say so in random polls, but it won't be an election issue.

I thought I read he is not allowed to replace him, but of course Vance could be persuaded to drop out for personal reasons etc.

Kamala Harris was speaking in Georgia last night. She said she has been down at the border and seen tunnels that people traffickers use to get people across the border. I am sure Sun Zhu had something to say about when the enemy is building tunnels, don't build walls.

What Trump will not say is that about half of the illegal migrants do not cross the southern border wall illegally. Rather they arrive in the United States legally with a work, study abroad, or tourist visa, then overstay their visa, consequently becoming illegal.

Theres a saying, "Show me a 10ft wall and I'll show you an 11 foot ladder".

I met a Palestinian who said she supported Trump simply because a least he was honest about his intentions towards Israel unlike the Dems. Seriously touch by the CT stick - but it cannot be a given that Arab Americans will jump Dem.

I am absolutely a self confessed "armchair psychologist". I like trying to figure out why people do the things they do. Reading this, is helping me understand Vance's attacks on childless people, his give more votes to parents and all his other bizarre 2.4 kids family beliefs.

Raised by his granny, because his mother was a drug addict, he had a revolving door of "stepdads" - 15 by some count. I would not be surprised if he had an attachment disorder as a child. It would only be natural.

He has mommy issues and it looks like they haven't neen dealt with it. It appears the man could do with some therapy.

I'd say I'm surprised this was overlooked by Trumps team, but I honestly don't think they did any oppo research on him at all.

In the same way that Trump told Bob Woodward that he knew Covid was serious by February or March of 2020, but didn't want to create a panic, I think he would confidentially admit that he knew the wall was no kind of remedy to illegal immigration, but its value as a symbol is massive.

why is just the morning time that I don't have pages of people I have on ignore on this thread ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,580 ✭✭✭✭briany

Yes, but that particular point is probably addressed by his proposal of rounding illegals up via the military yanking them out of their homes and so forth.

There is a tendency among trump supporters to criticise the 'anyone but Trump' approach to the US presidency. As though everyone thinks the same as them and bases their opinion on spite, or some sort of irrational knee-jerk reaction. Why would people in Ireland or elsewhere bother to do that? It doesn't matter too much to us how the US governs itself internally. However when you get a total incompetent who has sway over the US's foreign affairs then it does matter. Its not a Rep or Dem matter, for me, a competent, just and reasonable R president is fine, a stupid D not so much.

Since day one of his notion that he fancied himself as president, it was obvious to anyone, including people who had no idea who he was, that he was self serving, vain and more than a little stupid. Over the past decade he has proved this and built on it. Now, due to the 'guns, god and self' teaching and the endless patriotic self aggrandisement that has gone on for decades, and that he has tapped into, he has turned into a cult-leading monster. 'Anyone but Trump' is an inevitable conclusion for anyone with concerns outside their own personal little sphere. The world can survive a moderately competent, basically well intentioned president for 4 years, it would not do so well under Trump.

I wouldn't be so certain Millennial Fundy Christians have intentionally infiltrated every level of the American military, to the extent that they are known as the Crusader Army throughout the Middle East.

On a side note Arab Americans are not going to have strong positive feelings towards Harris since Biden did virtually nothing to rain in Isreal on his watch. Very bad optics.

Cal cited the case of the replacement of Thomas eagleton in the 1972 election.

Eagleton was nominated as the Dem VP by candidate George McGovern, who was running against Nixon. There were practically no background checks in those days, and it turned out Eagleton suffered severe depression and had been subject to Electro shock therapy. Cue the panic of someone with these aliments possibly "having the finger on the button"

eagleton then, under pressure, withdrew his candidacy, and was replaced by a Sargent Shriver (of the famous shriver family) who was a much more solid nomination

Trump proclaimed creating mass detention camps and the deportation of millions of undocumented immigrants if he wins in 2024, according to CNN 11 November 2023.

Yeah, the knock-on effects of another Trump presidency would potentially be large for Ireland due to his policy of essentially fining American companies who off-shore their labour. In the case where Google, Facebook, Amazon, Apple and pharmaceutical manufacturers were forced to move their operations back stateside, it would leave a massive hole in Ireland's budget, such is the tax take.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 42,818 ✭✭✭✭Boggles

Important point, they ended up losing the election by an absolute landslide.

The only thing more daft then appointing Vance would be replacing him.

They are stuck with him now.

It’s not just the corporate tax take that would be lost. There’s also income tax, USC, employer and employee PRSI. Not to mention the overall reduction in economic activity, increased unemployment payments, etc. etc. The overall impact would be devastating.

But not to worry. The straightened circumstances would no longer matter in a few years time when Trump’s reversal of climate change action causes the whole planet to become a desert.
