Broke a spoke on my back wheel, now the little bit at the bottom has got caught in behind the casette. I cannot get it out myself, its properly wedged in there and means the freewheel is also not working.

I am in the sticks for a few days, specifically have today and tmoro off work to go cycling. Called the nearest lbs, said he couldnt help me with wheels/spokes, directed me to a larger place but its 60k away. I guess i have to take the cassette off but no idea how to do that

You'd need a special socket to remove and re-mount the cassette (and possibly a 40Nm torque wrench)

Where abouts are you? If you're near me I can do it for you, otherwise there may be other boardsies close enough to you to give a dig out.

Any experience on Shimano press fit bb's, how long they last? That ticking noise has appeared again, similar to which was on my other threaded one. I do further investigations though. It's done approx. 10k kms already.
I was able to re-grease my threaded bb, is this possible with the press fit at all?
Despite of saying this, the old bike is clocked up 30k kms with a clicky bb, with no play on the pedals.

I have a question about what I think is most likely an issue with the free hub - I have a roadbike (bought in April) which always had a nice crisp sound from the free hub. Ever since last weekend it is pretty much silent and I’m not sure why - I was at a sportive on Saturday in really bad conditions, could that have affected it?

Also is it still ok for me to cycle it if it’s silent is there something wrong with it - I’ll probably have to call my LBS next week but is there any chance it could come back to normal in the meantime?! Any advice greatly appreciated. I am not a mechanic and would not trust myself to go taking it apart to investigate!!

Firstly I know very little about bike maintenance etc. My son has a Carrera Hellcat that I've been told needs a new chain and cassette with repair quote being 200 plus. Can it be turned into a fixie ( bike shop says no )? Any other options besides recycling? Thanks.

Original parts are less than €25 plus shipping.

    https://www.bike24.com/p295723.html

You'd need some special tools to complete the job. Lidl/Aldi occasionally have bike tool kits for €29.99 or so. Or you can get one here for €62. https://www.bike24.com/p2417518.html

The job isn't too difficult and an hour or two spent following the step by step Park Tool videos should see you right. It's very satisfying once you get it right.

The risk is that the diagnosis isn't accurate and it maybe needs new front chain rings as well, or something else that you can't readily diagnose if your own repair job doesn't clear things up.

If you do decide to recycle please consider one of the social enterprises that upcycle bikes (like https://bikeworkshops.ie/ in Galway).

Is it the disc brake model? If so you can convert to Fixed gear as I have done it with another bike but I am not sure it is worth the effort or cost to do it right. Where are you based? If it's is around Wexford or South Dublin, drop me a PM and I'll fit them for you and show you what you need to buy for the next time for a cop of coffee or a can of beer. Probably 15 minutes work at most. Also post pictures first just to make sure that is actually what you need.

Likewise with this post, if you're around Kildare, pm me, I'll swap them out

I didn't think people like you existed any more. I'm stunned. I'll follow up tomorrow as I need to recover first. Thanks..

Just wondering is there anything I can do to prevent minor corrosion/rust appearing on the links of my new chain? My chain is lubed, I haven’t ridden in wet conditions this year and the bike is locked away in a bike lock up.

How new, how often do you lube it, and what lube?

If I've cycled in wet conditions I'd often lube every ride.

Do bike shops tend to carry loose bearings in stock? I opened up a 30 year old deore DX hub which was grumbling and some of the bearings are far from round.

My cheapo Lidl digital calipers claims they are 4.75mm.

approx 8 weeks old. I use muc off dry lube on the rollers. Rust is on the outer links! Admittedly I do not lube too often until the chain/cassette is filthy and requires degreasing.

Dry lube is for dry weather and washes off at the first opportunity. You'd need something more durable for commuting; wet lube is not that popular with some people in that it's sticky and can attract grit, but I find a thin coat of wet lube with dry lube over the top worked for me.

dry lube is fine…but you should relive every few days. Toptip, as your cycling along look at your chain..the rollers should look dull..if they are shiny, you need to re-lube. Also .. carry a small container of dry lube with you so you can relube mid ride if necessary.

After the Ring of Beara my rear tire suddenly went from being in fairly good nick to ready for the bin and I'm scratching my head somewhat as to why. The pictures show pretty much the state of it all the way round. I did check them just before going to Beara and there was a tiny patch something like the more minor patches wear in the 2nd/3rd images, but I thought I'd chance it (it was fine when there). Given the conditions on the day I was too glad to get off the bike so didn't pay any heed at the time as there was the important matters of hot shower, pints, and rugby to be attended to.

Obviously this is headed for the bin, but I'm curious if anybody has any insight as to why they might have deteriorated so rapidly. They're Vittoria Rubino 28mm tubeless, and don't have huge milage on them - probably 4000km tops - but that'd be over 2+ years as circumstances have seen me either on the turbo or using the other bike a lot of the time.

Trying to get the replacement seated has been a fruitless exercise despite soapy water, removed valve cores, several track pumps, skinned knuckles, the children learning some interesting swear words - but that's a whole other story

Was there a lot of loss of traction on loose surfaces during the event, maybe?

As for seating the tyre, if you're in Kildare, or nearby, I've a compressor that should do the job

it looks quite even all the way around - and the fact that you'd seen one worn patch, even if it was small, suggested the tyres were worn beyond their useful life at that point. could have been a fraction of a mm of rubber on the tyres which didn't take much to wear away.

i've had a couple of experiences of 'yeah, they're fine for a while yet' to 'holy ****, that looks like it's about to explode' within very short use.

what tyre pressure had you inflated it to?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,556 ✭✭✭JMcL

Traction seemed fine - not that I'd have probably noticed anything anyway with the howling crosswinds and rain on the day. Road surfaces weren't anything out of the ordinary. I'm down in Waterford, but thanks anyway. I have a second tire lying around which I'll try to see if it's more amenable, otherwise I'll throw a tube in it for now so I don't miss another weekend.

I reckon this is the most likely scenario. Despite the low total mileage over the past couple of years, they've had a fair whack all told post Easter

I usually run them around 60-65psi which seems to be fine in terms of comfort and rolling resistance. It probably would have an impact on lifespan than if I were running say 75psi but if it's ultimately a tradeoff for taking the sting out of the washboards that pass for roads I usually take, that's fair enough.

Can anyone recommend a good strong puncture repair kit?

They are not for a bike, but for the inflatable lid of an ice bath! Was told by the manufacturer to use them

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 26,031 Mod ✭✭✭✭CramCycle

There all pretty much the same, just make sure to sand it down in the area first, after that whatever your LBS has in stock should do the job.

Looking to replace shimano lo5 brake pads. Is it necessary to use the correct ones or can i use the ones that don't have the fins?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 26,031 Mod ✭✭✭✭CramCycle

Which brakes do you have? normally you can but just in case, I can definitely use either on my GRX brakes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,150 ✭✭✭Mundo7976

    Thanks. They are r785 hydraulic.

I'm thinking either will be fine as the cooling fins are a bit marketing!

I'm having woeful trouble with shifting, my gears.

I have replaced the cable and there's a new chain and casette on, I also changed the jockey wheels!

I can tune it as well as I like but it won't consistently shift well. At best I can have it shifting well into all but either the hargest or lightest gear.

Do the springs in a derailleur become jaded and need replacement, it's tye only thing left to change.

I only changed the cable as I felt that it wasn't readily slipping back through the housing. Is it pulossible that the derailleur isn't pulling hard enough to shift down the cassette?
