KCC have published the Part 8 for the Wonderful Barn redevelopment:

    https://consult.kildarecoco.ie/en/consultation/part-8-proposed-redevelopment-wonderful-barn-p8202410

Would love to see this happen, would be a great amenity for the town.

Two immediate thoughts (after, this would be great): they appear to be moving the allotments, rather than adding more? The waiting list for them is so oversubscribed that it's closed, and yet there's no plans to add more here?

Secondly - why is the cafe on the other side from the playground? Why not have it overlooking, so parents/minders can relax with a cuppa and watch their kids at the same time? And offer passive surveillance of the playground equipment too.

Yeah, having the cafe beside the playground makes perfect sense, not having this is sort of mind boggling!

I read in the plans and I thought it said a 'supposed' cafe.

Well to be fair, it is a public consultation so get your views in!

With the playground I imagine having it an area that has the most natural surveillance is best from a security point of view, especially in the evening / night when any cafe is long closed. Having it on the other side of the barn might provide more visibility from the housing estate?

What is going on with the lights at Intel now?

    I miss the roundabout!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 370 ✭✭CiaranW

Thanks, so it looks like the roundabout is gone for good now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,161 ✭✭✭buffalo

Yes. I suspect it will be a lot freer-flowing once the roadworks are finished and all the extra lanes are in operation, and Louisa Bridge too. Whether it will be an improvement congestion-wise on the roundabout remains to be seen. I would've liked to see some measurement of the delays before work started, as people will quickly forget how long the tailbacks were beforehand.

Just seeing this - there was a survey done this time last year on allotments in Kildare, looking for new sites / proposals as part of it. So maybe they intend to have some sites identified to move the allotment to? It was a popular survey, it had over 1,000 submissions!

Edit: almost exactly a year ago! https://consult.kildarecoco.ie/en/content/would-you-allotment-near-you

    The KCC way!

Even as someone who cycles and walks a lot, I find traffic lights do more harm for car traffic than they alleviate, but they are better for cyclists and pedestrians, so seem to get priority no matter what.
At Intel, I would argue that a roundabout is a better option based on the split of motor/cycle/pedestrian traffic.

Getting tired of all the water disruption :/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 370 ✭✭CiaranW

Yeah, there has been a few water disruptions the last few months.

If the new junction/lights in Intel will be anything like the new one in Liffey Valley it'll just lead to more waiting, which is already what it seems like.

I just don't understand the need for lights there, that roundabout only seemed to be an issue in the mornings with intel. I have gone from never really having to wait at the roundabout (for any significant time anyway) to having to wait for a decent amount for sometimes no traffic. I'll give it time until it's been in action to make a final judgment but it already seems like a problem that wasn't there has been fixed - and with more traffic lights which pretty much seems to be the go-to solution in North Kildare…

Yeah, I hear the traffic is really bad in the mornings at Intel now. Traffic back up past the Kilmacredock roundabout.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,161 ✭✭✭buffalo

I'm regularly through that junction on foot and in car, and it's going to be a slightly worse in the car, but massively better on foot. That's the problem it's fixing.

The change from a Roundabout to traffic lights is to improve traffic flow so I think it will be fair to judge it on that. Definitely some awkward places to cross on foot around there made worse I thought by the widening coming from Kilmacredock, did it add an extra lane towards Maynooth at the time? Improvements for pedestrians definitely welcome but I am not sure very many cross on foot there but could be wrong. I think the main walking routes there are Intel to train and leisure walkers circling around by Lidl>Westfield>Glen Easton, neither of those require crossing the road at the Roundabout. Hopefully they get the signalling right and then should be good for traffic. Longer flows from the Amenities when queues there clash with shift end at Intel would be a plus.

I saw the first bit of playground equipment at the Wonderful Barn yesterday, not for use yet of course but good to see progress there.

Does anyone know are the two enormous cylindrical tanks opposite this new Leixlip playground site on Intel land holding gas or water ? I shudder to consider the consequences if the latter in event of an accident .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,161 ✭✭✭buffalo

Not many cross on foot there at the moment because it's so horrible. That's not a great metric to judge it by. For instance, I know people living on Green Lane who drive to work in Intel because it's too awkward getting there by foot or bike with the roundabout.

If catching a bus to Maynooth from any of the western Green Lane estates, it'll be quicker and easier in future to go to the bus stop by Jones' Engineering (and better for timing) rather than backward to the Amenities.

Fair enough hopefully the change will improve traffic flow and usability for pedestrians/cyclists. I know a few people who drive to Intel from Station Road estates, no hope for them.

Water gone again, less than 2 weeks since the last outage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,728 ✭✭✭WishUWereHere

I believe that when the extensions to Intel were implemented a few years ago ‘ the road was altered the agreement was that when the works are finished, the road would be altered back to its original way, hence the eradication of the roundabout etc.

also, it was mentioned above that the queues in the mornings were back to the Kilmacredock roundabout? I travel that road every morning & ( with school holidays etc ), I’ve yet to see such queue and I’m on it around 08h00. If anything the queues have lessened.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34 cgorzy

The roundabout was there before any of the Intel extension work so removing it is a change from the original layout. The road towards Maynooth after the roundabout is being moved back to its original alignment. Hopefully the change works out well for all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,728 ✭✭✭WishUWereHere

thanks for clarifying the roundabout issue. IMO, doing away with the roundabout isn’t all bad. Traffic lights will stop

The drivers who drive down the outside lane and going right around the roundabout to jump the queue turning left for the multi storey car parks and choking up the roundabout hindering those who want to head towards Leixlip Village

Water again, a whole 2 months without interruption

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 370 ✭✭CiaranW

Yeah, it was gone all day!
It is becoming a thing now isn't it!!
My broadband was gone the other day as well and that has been knocked off a few times now in the last year as well.

Looking to book a hotel for some family that will be visiting from the UK in early December.

Anyone any local recommendations. Was thinking about the Courtyard hotel. Just worried that a lot of the smaller hotels are now housing refugees, but I haven't heard anything about the Courtyard

    Thanks

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators Posts: 42,852 Mod ✭✭✭✭Seth Brundle

Not familiar with the Courtyard for staying in.

    The Springfield doesn't host refugees.

I would avoid the Spa completely!!!!!

There is also the Leixlip Manor beside St. Catherine's Park which also has rooms in the old outhouses.

Thank you, I thought the Springfield had gone down hill the last time I went in for some Sunday lunch. But some people seem to love it so I might pop back in and see if I am still getting the same vibe from it.

Your not the first to warn against the Spa hotel, so I think that is certainly off the list
