Thanks so much for the reply. My son can code and is interested in computers so that is whythis might be the best option for him as an extra. Would also have to travel from Dublin, the only plus is that I am from there originally and go regularly to visit my parents. Was wondering if there was any issue doing the exam in your own school, having the right computer or software required etc.

Also, would it have eaten it to study time to travel to Limerick for the project. I am a secondary teacher myself so know how busy after Christmas in 6th Year can be. Thank you so much for taking the time to respond and best of luck with the results.

Ok mods... Hope this is ok as it's an old enough thread, but still probably relevant.

Computer Science for students outside school via Trinity College...

TCD Computer Science Hedge School is now accepting applications for September 2025!

The Computer Science Hedge School is a new programme offered by The School of Computer Science and Statistics, and the Trinity Access Programmes, at Trinity College Dublin. Students will have the opportunity to take Leaving Certificate Computer Science as an additional subject, outside of school hours.

See the attached information for applications for details.

    • Any student who will be starting 5th year in September 2025 and attends a school where Computer Science (CS) is not offered as a Leaving Certificate (LC) subject is eligible to apply.

    • The Hedge School is supported by a philanthropic grant from Google.org so there is no cost to the student, their parent/guardian or the school.

    • A teacher in your school will need to write a reference letter for you – this should be someone in a leadership position who knows you, such as the principal, year head, TY coordinator, etc. We will contact the school to ask for the letter.

    • Deadline for applications is the 26th of May – but apply early!

    Informational Webinar for Students

    • A webinar about the Computer Science Hedge School will take place next Thursday the 15th of May from10.00am – 11.00am.
    • Students will hear about the benefits of studying computer science, details about the Leaving Certificate course of study, and information on how to apply.
    • There will also be an opportunity to ask questions.
    • A Zoom link will be sent to everyone on the Hedge School mailing list, sign up using this link if you have not done so already.
    • Joining the webinar is not required to apply, but all are welcome to come!
    • A recording of the webinar will be available.
    • The webinar is aimed at students, but teachers/school management/guidance counsellors/parents are encouraged to attend also.

Please don’t hesitate to contact Dr Jennifer Murphy with any questions or comments at jennifer.murphy@tcd.ie. Classes will start in late August/early September 2025, pending final approval by the State Examinations Commission.
