This is the alternative when addressing the world stage...

He looks and sounds better and in an election that matters a lot. Biden looks frail and can barely speak without a teleprompter. Constantly getting names wrong. Either he steps aside or Trump wins.

Biden is also lacking the convicted fraudster and rapist awards that are apparently vote winners. The Democrats would need to pardon and put forth Bill Cosby to appeal to voters it seems.

If he was your father you wouldn't let him drive a car, use a knife or go to the shops by himself.

Trumps failings and obvious evils won't matter when all the focus will be on Bidens cognitive decline. That's just the reality now, no amount of some Irish lad online howling about Trump like a maniac will change the fact that American voters are making it very clear Biden needs to drop out or Trump will win.

I suspect @Overheal will disappear now for a few days after Biden’s gaffes.

That is all very true and in a normal situation should be the key points.

But Trump isn't a normal situation. We know that Trump is given special treatment by his supporters and his media supporters. His issues are baked in and simply accepted. 'What he actually meant' is a line thrown out all the time due to the massive amount of lies, mistakes and brain farts he has.

But. Biden positioned himself as the alternative to that. The serious politician that can beat Trump through clear, sane, and trustworthy talk and actions.

One can rage against the unfairness of the double standards, but the Dems were warmed about running HC and didn't listen and they are now facing the same decision over Biden.

Should his record be more than enough to squash Trump? 100%. But nobody is focused on his record. There will be no clips of his detaiked answers in the press conference but clips of him mixing up Putin and Zelensky will be everywhere.

It's not fair but that is the situation they find themselves in. Dems, and Biden, need to stop wishing they were in a different fight and face the reality of the fight they are in.

Biden has done a great job. He has served his country well. But right now the biggest threat to US is Trump - at least the US that the dems would like. Biden needs to acknowledge and accept that him staying in the race allows the conversation to be about his issues rather than focusing on Trump.

Trump has had a free ride since the debate. His catalogue of lies during the debate has been completely forgotten due to Biden performance. And since then, despite numerous attempts at a reset, Biden continues to provide evidence that he is struggling.

He needs to step aside. He needs to acknowledge that he too old. He might not think it, but everyone else does.

The problem for Biden is that everyone is waiting for the next gaff. They aren't listening to what he is saying. He could talk for 10 hours and solve all the world's problems but as soon as he tries to walk off left instead of right the clip is in the bank. Doddery old Biden can't remember where the door is.

    That isn't going to change.

Agreed, and whose fault is this?

The media here are more interested in gaffes than policy and the stuff that really matters.

In the early days of the US, Trump would be vice president… the VP went to whoever got 2nd highest number of electoral college votes for Presidency. So you had Federalist Adams with Jefferson from a different party as his VP.

Tis a pity he didn't mix up Trump and Putin. Not even lucky in his gaffes.

With the amount of overall harassment and vain-like digs from his own side, it's no wonder Joe is falling over a few words. He would not be blundering like this if he were not under so much consistent stress. I still think Joe is better than the following-up lot. The US political system as a whole is falling into satire. It would not surprise me if the darkhorse Kennedy gives Don-Don and Joe a run for their money.

As for CNN the one-time pro-Joe, they have smelled the money like Fox and co.

how do the media talk themselves out of this situation? , "the dogs on the street" knew there was something up with Biden for years, its such a funny year

They may well have been in denial even to themselves just how much Biden had gone downhill mentally. That debate seemed to come as a shock to everyone in the US……nobody anticipated that he would struggle to such a degree, it was worse than anyone expected.

The problem isn’t his record. It’s good, but we aren’t electing a person to do the last four years, we are electing him for the next four years, and what matters is his prospective record.

There are now legitimate concerns that he is capable of doing as well in the future as he has in the past. As the investments adverts keep saying, past performance is no guarantee of future gains. Sure, most of his policies will be continued in the same vein by a cabal of handlers and aids (assuming folks will be OK with in effect electing a cabal behind a figurehead), but his advisors and handlers aren’t going to be sitting in the “United States” seat in major meetings on policy with other nations for the next four years as Biden has been this week. An old man whose sharpness is apparently being dulled by time is in that seat and is proposed to stay in it. That is an issue, Trump or no Trump.

Maybe.. but his time is up. Everyone needs to know when it's time to go.

I think the debate being so early might be because of his team deciding to get it out of the way before he deteriorates more, so at least there is one in the bag in case he doesn't do one closer to the vote.

So why are an increasing amount of Democrats, his very own party, asking him to stand aside?

The alternative is electing a dictator who has established he will have presidential immunity for whatever he wants to do:

The media here are more interested in gaffes than policy and the stuff that really matters.

This is an interesting point but it is one the Democrats and the Progressive order in the US have made for themselves.

The emergence of Trump in 2016 was a goldmine for corporate news media in the US. He made them billions given the coverage he entailed.

Now, in 2024 Trump is seen rightly or wrongly as a dictator in waiting. I am not so sure that is the case, but many in the US believe it and the US media are going to portray Trump as a monster in waiting.

Now we have clear evidence that Biden is failing cognitively and the media are also panicking about Trump being a shoo-in.

In other words, the Democrats and Biden cant complain about unfair coverage given they created that monster in the first place.

You got to suck it up.

Or finding a replacement candidate. There are still a few months before the election and it’s a nation of, what, 360 million people. There has to be at least one registered Democrat who would be better. However, I happen to believe that a Trump presidency is not going to be the end of our representative republic so if the Democrats continue to balls this up and lose as a result, so be it.

It's not the alternative. Reminder: the people who want Biden to step aside want trump to lose. People want a replacement to beat trump, the worry is that Biden will lose.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,306 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

Some people who want Biden to step aside want Trump to lose. There are others who do so because of their partisan hostility to Biden and his Presidency and seeking to somehow delegitimize his win over Trump and the accomplishments in office.

Trump campaigners want Biden to stay in the race. They feel they have a better shot against him than anybody else.

This is obvious from how they play a game of hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil when it comes to Trump's elder moments, unhinged rants, and worse conduct.

They aren't thinking that far ahead about what comes next. It's a win cos it is a take down the 'King' of the other side.

The leaked documents show the DNC colluded with the media back in 2016 to make him the Republican candidate thinking he would be easy to beat. They wanted him, not the RNC. So yeah, they created the monster and changed US politics forever by having him on CNN etc. non-stop before the Republican primaries.

It feels similar this time around. Constant news coverage for years about court cases with a lot of people feeling like they were politically motivated, his defense leading to the Supreme Court ruling about immunity, and then an obviously weak Biden but anyone mentioning it branded a Trump supporter. And now it's too late to properly fix.

Trump loses when he is in power and people are motivated to vote him out. I would imagine the "get him out of office" vote is a lot stronger than the "keep him out of office" vote, and then there is the problem of people just staying at home because they aren't motivated by Biden.
