It will be DMG with 2 of molumphy, brick, shanahan, joxer, ken etc and an outsider for the third role.

There isn't anyone inside the county that is on par with DMG. DOS knows his bounds/capabilities and he's not within an asses roar of the standard required along with Sean Power etc.

Success in Camogie shouldn't come near Hurling Management conversation. Similarly with success in Hurling not coming into Camogie Management conversation.

They are completely different sports. The pace of them, the length of player strikes at full pelt, puckout distances etc.

Have been with management teams at Intercounty Camogie and Intercounty Hurling level and it's chalk and cheese tactically and physcially.

Well it won't be Ken McGrath in with him if it's Derek anyway

I had heard at the weekend that Davy was gone. The same person said that there are huge financial issues as well which if true are likely to be a factor in his decision. It seems strange as we made around €750,000 from the house draw last year but maybe someone here knows more.

There would be one positive in Derek McGrath getting the job, there wouldn't be any need for the further re-development of Walsh Park because you'd be able to fit the crowd following Waterford in the stand in Carriganure.

All year the county board have said the purse strings will be tightened on every county manager. Maybe that was made clear to Davy and he didn’t fancy the cutbacks.
Molumphy is going to be stationed abroad for at least a year, his whole family are relocating to Brussels so that’s a complete non runner.

Derek will definitely put his hat in the ring. Whether Dan would go again when involved with the U20’s with Ken is hard to say.
Talk of Derek bringing Fintan O’Connor back in with him even.

Donal O’Rourke would be more of a coach than manager possibly. Certainly that for Cork anyway.

It's more about at coaching team these days

What I've heard goes beyond purse strings being tightened, more that massive debt has been accumulated. Though I still can't understand how that could happen.

easy understand how it happens when you know the numptys guarding the top table

Tbf we gave Liam Cahill a go at it from only having minor and u21 experience, what would have put him ahead of DOS or Power?

Waterford has won 7 all Ireland titles between minor, U20/21 and senior. Power has won two of those.

DOS has landed Waterford's only club All Ireland, despite very good Mount Sion and DLS teams in the past coming up short.

What is the basis of saying DOS or Power are not at the standard? Genuine question.

Shefflin has stepped down as Galway manager today too. I’m not sure he will want to get back on the horse too soon but it seems like an obvious swop in terms of time management for both him and Davy.

Whatever about Shefflin who has a big job with BOI, I can’t see Davy staying away too long. I would expect developments after a nice long Summer break. Galway always gave the hurlers but rarely the direction. A Davy reboot might be just the trick they need.

I'd be surprised if Henry doesn't take a break from intercounty management for a while. The Galway job was not a success really in any way. He may need some time to reflect before gathering the enthusiasm to go again.

Would love for Davy to get the Galway job just for James Skehills reaction

    He’s coming home

Wonder is Brian Cody itching to get back into intercounty management. Very much doubt it he'd go for the Waterford job. Same with the likes of Tipps Michael Ryan and Liam Sheedy

Galway's next manager will be a native, 2 poor tenures in a row for outside managers, I'd say the Galway public would love to snatch Michael Donoghue away from Dublin, don't know when it will happen but I'd be shocked if Davy didn't end up with the Dubs too at some point.

Shefflin getting the Waterford job would be a joke. He has done nothing to warrant getting it.

Davy getting top level managerial jobs is a joke too for what is worth.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,972 ✭✭✭decies

Derek mcgrath getting another shot would be a bigger joke

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,368 ✭✭✭✭callaway92

Agreed but it feels more likely

The manager merry-go-round is depressing. There are so many top class managers and coaches that just can’t seem to get a look in at county level for whatever reason

Good luck to the County Board when they try to fundraise if Derek McGrath gets the job!

Gleeson already committed to returning for next year….. did Daveys departure have anything to do with his decision……?

Has a ‘player / manager’ model ever been tried in GAA……maybe W’ford could give it a go.m…? Some of the older players might give it a go…?

Throw out a few names there and help them get some exposure

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,368 ✭✭✭✭callaway92

It was a broad statement not specifically Waterford related

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 435 ✭✭Montys return

Fair enough, not having a go or anything. I'm just saying if you know lads who you think are good enough and interested in general, the only way they get known is people talking about them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 452 ✭✭JD. 60

Cody would rather cut off his right arm than manage another county.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 452 ✭✭JD. 60

Wasn't O'Donoghue's departure from Galway acrimonious ; he mightn't be in any rush back.

The St. Thomas's manager might get it, after winning the club AI. If that's the case, Waterford CoBo take note !

Is this suggestion actually for real, a player manager at intercounty level? Talk about being clueless.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,117 ✭✭✭DiscoStew

I may be mistaken but I think Burke (Thomas’ manager) was Galway minor manager this year also. No doubt he’s a good manager but might be a little further down the line before he goes into senior intercounty management.

Would James Woodlock be worth a chance? I’d expect he’ll probably move up to Tipp U20, but if Cummins was to remain at U20 and Woodlock was available he’d be an interesting appointment. He’s done a very impressive job with Tipp minors over the past few years.

Whether he could translate that to a county outside of his own and especially at senior intercounty level, would be interesting to see.

Saying that, I fully expect Derek McGrath to get the gig.
