What would it take to get it back into ag land?

You would need to buy similar ag land and then apply to plant that in lieu when applying for a felling licence for the current trees.

Plus you'd have to ask yourself why was it originally planted. I'm considering planting some ground mainly because its too wet and poor for grass but would make excellent forestry land. But there has been occasion when farms were planted out of spite.

honestly you'd want to have contacts in the industry, forestry is being pushed to the big operators when you factor in felling licenses, road grants and all the sh*t that has been put in place. Personally I wouldn't touch it unless you are semi interested in managing it yourself even then its a slow and tedious sector which is a huge pity.

I saw a relatively large collection of sites for a cumulative total of over 650 acres with an asking of 7m.

That is mental money for such land. The only ones that I could see buying at that would be county councils spending bottomless public money trying to tick boxes to hit certain targets.

It's not that long since a big farm of 1000 or 1100 acres of good land in Offaly (or somewhere like that) was sold for about 10k an acre

What kind of trees are they?? If just monoculture spruce its likely that the living part of the soil will be badly impacted by acidic leeching that could take many years to fix:(
