Or having enough knowledge of the music scene to then bring these new artists / music to the fore, knowing how to piece together different songs together to form a good mix/flow, how to first of all know the intro/outro of different songs, and how to properly utilize these to talk over. Just for a start.

Wouldn't touch that competition if it was free entry. The amount of rubbish they force the presenters to come out with to promote it is woeful, and to make their jobs depend on it is depressing.

Speaking of depressing. Is that alcoholic "comedian" Stafford confirmed?

    This too shall pass.

Donnacha has kids who go the same school as my boy, always seemed like a nice guy. Still think he'd make a good kids TV presenter

This should really be the end of Lottie "I only got this job because of my Daddy" Ryan. Fair play to the bosses for dropping her. She is useless and can't talk about anything outside RSVP and giggling about some Z list celeb. No talent, presence or charisma. If she stays there just to empty the bins at 3am she's going to look like the most pathetic employee on the planet. Read the room girl and close the door on your way out!

do you mean weekday mid afternoons or drivetime?

barry was on 5 to 7pm for around 11 years up until 1998 when he left 2FM

gareth was 3 to 5 pm and larry was 12 to 3pm mostly during this period

That's a serious way to belittle a radio presenters career, I've skin in the game (not with RTE) but speaking from experience and having gone through years of college (Media,English,Performance) Knocking on different PD's doors , doing the late night and weekend ghost slots for the slightest chance of a "break" in Radio. It might seem like all you have to do is turn up and laugh or speak randomly about certain topics , Its certainly not the case.

It's funny how a lot of nepo-babies try hard to distance themselves from their parents, they might change their surname, hide their background for as long as they can get away with, or just constantly remind everyone how they made it on their own merits. Not Lottie though, usually the first mention of her father comes within 2.5 seconds of the first mention of her name, she really is tied to him and everyone knows she'd be nothing without him. Even after her sacking, her "sources" were straight out with the "Gerry would have been devastated to hear this." She really has absolutely no identity of her own - and she's made no effort to build one either.

I was misremembering earlier. Barry Lang was Drivetime until February 1998, and Tony Fenton was mid-afternoon from the summer of 1997, replacing Gareth. Where did Gareth go in the summer of 1997?

For such a young girl she has zero ambition in her life. It's very strange she hasn't lived overseas for a couple of years, tried different dj jobs over Europe..basically spread her wings and network. But no...stubbornly sticking to the same radio station her father lorded over, pushing genuinely talented applicants out of an opportunity because of her last name. Its beyond a joke now. Her bosses have shown her in as clear a fashion as possible that she is not wanted or respected in her workplace. Anyone with half a brain cell would get the message. Instead she will end up like that guy in the movie Office Space down in the dark basement forgotten by everyone!

It will be some craic if she goes down for Donnachas leaving do for some cake. "Ah Lottie I'm off...what are you going to do with yourself now?" "Eh...I'll stay and take whatever job they throw at me".

If she doesn't like people telling the truth about her nepotism being the only reason she works in radio, she is free to get a job down in Spar or Aldi stacking shelves 9 to 5.

Ian didn't leave 2FM until the autumn of 1998.

She has arrested development in 2fm, leaving radio might be the best thing that she could do. It would give her a chance to step out from her father's shadow and go her own way. She is a choreographer and make up artist afaiaa, maybe build a career in those or go back to college and retrain.

Gareth left 2FM briefly to work with Gay Byrne on Radio 1 around 1997

Can't believe with the changes announced for RTE today, that this money-pit shitshow of a station continues.

    Zero need for it.

Not really relevant for a radio station that plays Adele, Gavin James, Picture This and the likes….

Definitely. Raj looks to be on a downward spiral. I did hope it’d survive the nostalgia sake but with the latest announcements and lineup changes I think it’d would be better to just call time.

She has been swanning around on 2fm for 14 years and only got in there in the first place because of who her oul lad was.

If she really wanted to make a name for herself on radio then why not try to get a better position on one of the other stations instead of taking the easy option bladdering on about showbiz news on 2fm all these years.

or actually try to improve her abilities/skills, and not coast on her surname, but sure why start now

Gareth moved to Radio 1 in 1997, it was a bit of a strange move if I recall, Gaybo was beginning his wind-down and Gareth took on 2-3 of his shows per week and Gay continued to do 2-3 shows.

Tony Fenton then moved into Gareth’s 3-5 slot (he used to call it 3-5 LIVE!). Dusty Rhodes took over Tony’s Hotline at 7pm (later renamed “Most Wanted”, but imo it was never the same without Tony).

Then in early 98, Barry Lang departed entirely and Aidan Leonard took his drive time 5-7 slot.

In Summer 98, Iano famously handed his notice in but they showed him the door immediately. Gareth was brought back from Radio 1 as his breakfast replacement.

I don’t think this schedule lasted more than a year or 18 months or so. By late 99 or early 2000, Gareth had moved back to afternoons again, Tony made way and took the 5-7pm slot and Damian McCaul took breakfast.

And as we all know, that pattern continued into the 2000’s, with numerous schedule changes every other year at least! The settled period of the 1990’s was never repeated.

Very useful, thanks. As I said above, I clearly remember Tony Fenton taking over afternoons and Dusty Rhodes moving to replace him on the Hotline in 1997, but remembered the other movements less clearly, particularly what happened to Gareth O'Callaghan that freed up the afternoon slot. The Hotline soldiered on for two years under Dusty, until Most Wanted replaced it in May 1999. That was pretty short-lived in comparison though, think it ended around 2003?

I'd actually forgotten completely Damian McCaul's not-so-great move to breakfast until recently.

Yeah the Hotline was never the same when they changed it to a 2 hour slot for “Most wanted”. Yes it ended around 2003, both Dusty and Tony left 2FM around the same time I think.

Yeah McCaul’s stint in Breakfast didn’t last long either. He was replaced by Tubridy’s “Full Irish”.

    That's Today FM's permanent playlist.

2FM, well the shows I have listened to, seem to actually try to play better stuff to be fair, and some of the better presenters highlight new artists and music. I posted in this thread a few weeks ago about how their Friday morning run of songs included CMAT, Peggy Gou, SZA, Strabe, Khakiki Kid etc. that's not run of the mill stuff. And that was by a new presenter that is being lumped in with the tik tockers just because their name that is not that of a 50 year old male. That presenters show regularly play that kind of stuff.
