EP took the sold out money with promises of a massive name SO big the festival dates were being moved to accommodate.

So which one of the second rate acts is it?

as per Melvin interview the other week he moved the festival for Calvin Harris availability.
In slight defence of Calvin he is massively popular artist with massive pop hits

Don't understand how he'd be worth moving the dates for, sure he was only over here last year with longitude.

Feel like Kylie would've been more worthy of moving festival date if any of the current acts would be.

Believing a word from Belvin Menn is foolhardy.

It would be hard to fathom that EP was moved to accommodate Calvin Harris. Kylie at a push, but not Harris. Coldplay seems to be the most obvious reason

but he sold out his longitude day. He is worth money at end of day. Main thing in eyes of FR/Melvin.
melvin said it on a news talk interview the day of the announcement that Calvin had very limited availability so that’s why they moved it to suit.

They already had the money from the moment the festival sold out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,435 ✭✭✭Fanirish

I meant in sense of he is extremely popular artist who is a big draw and headlines other major festivals through the world

Earlier in the thread you also said EP had a better offering than Reading which is also blatantly not true. A quick look at Reading and Liam Gallagher, Lana del Rey, Blink 182 and Fontaines DC are all playing. This is not about what younger audiences want, it's about cutting the quality year after year to the point where we have this blandest of offerings. Yet they moved it because of Calvin Harris? Please! They'd be better off moving it into the Irish sea at this rate!

Trying to pick which is the better line-up between R&L and EP is like trying to decide which would make the better sh*te sandwich, the 'Vindaloo Error' or the 'Weekend on the Guinness'.

His tour dates certainly don't indicate limited availability. Still free on Sat/Sun of traditional EP weekend. Most weekends his only thing is a Friday night residency in Ibiza:

Moving a whole festival for him is a lie. Not sure how you're this gullible, especially to a track-record bullshitter like Mevlin Benn.

To repeated point that seathrun makes about “diversity” on the EP lineup I said festival republic do a far better job on a diverse line up with EP than they do with reading/Leeds. Between having devoted reggae, acoustic, various electronic music genres, trad music stages electric picnic covers a wide array of genres, far more than Reading/Leeds.

3 out of the 4 acts you mentioned are doing their own headline shows in ireland this summer/autumn. thus not playing EP. Liam G doing multiple 3 arenas, Belfast and Limerick. Fontaines doing 2 nights at 3 arena and blink 182 are doing rescheduled 3 arena show in Kilmainham to make up for cancelled show last year.
that’s why they aren’t on the EP line up. Band agents decide what’s the best option for their artist, sometimes it playing EP and sometimes it’s doing own summer headline shows. As I’ve said here before EP cannot force a band agent to accept an offer.

Why are 3 or 4 acts though doing their own headline shows, these gigs should be banned as it leads to bad festival line ups.

maybe he has personal engagements or a wedding to go to EP weekend. It also ties into Noah kahan European schedule so them moving it to capture both Calvin and the biggest hype act makes perfect sense to me.

The diversity you mention is not from EP personnel but from the side stages outside the main arena where Jerry Fish, Cian Finn, the Salty Dog, Trenchtown, Providencia and others do their own booking. What we’d like is more variety on the largest five/six stages where the FR team are doing a very poor job.

Reading/Leeds are pretty atrocious lowest common denominator festivals with nothing bar the music. They’ve got the worst food choices I’ve ever seen and the campsites make the Oxegen of old look restrained. The demographic is almost entire 17/18 year old kids celebrating their A-Level results. It wasn’t always like this and here’s hoping EP doesn’t end up being equally appalling.

Could be. Or Melvin could be, yet again, full of sh1t. But keep reaching for those straws…..

    That’s gotta be a joke.

Paint it whatever way you like, Calvin Harris is B list.

Melvin has made empty promises and filled his pockets, its the 20th anniversary and the best he can muster with 20 years to think about it is Calvin Harris!

Then ATN ads the prodigy like they’ve never been heard of 😂

PR and BS go hand in hand, pissing down my back and telling me it’s raining

    Snarky Snark Snark

He might be b-list to a lot here (he's a dreadful f'in booking) but there's a whole lotta people in this country have absolutely **** chronic taste in music and will love it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,847 ✭✭✭Hoboo

I don’t disagree. But the same people would love the chemical brothers more, or dare I say it, the prodigy.

I fully expected the chemical brothers, they’ve been amazing at EP before, was the perfect dance slot.

Calvin Harris plays to cheese loving teenagers in ibiza Rocks, not EP 20th Birthday Bash 😬🙂

Would love to know how much Melvin splashed out on him, I’d say there was free tickets for his mates involved and about 4 figures.

Noah Kahan wasn't on anybodies radar last year so that' certainly wasn't a consideration.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,435 ✭✭✭Fanirish

yeah he was, he sold out the 3 arena in minutes Back in august 2023.

To repeat a point I made before, this is not agent driven. It's not a co-incidence that festival calibre bands play festivals in other countries and not Ireland. There is a complementary trend of weakening festival lineups and increased standalone gigs to maximise profits. It's not good for musical diversity and likely won't change as long as we sell out festivals with tepid lineups.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,435 ✭✭✭Fanirish

Alot of it is agent driven. and in other European countries there is big outdoor headline show venues as well which has similar effect on festival line ups in those countries why x, y, z isn’t playing certain festivals.
A key reason why certain “festival” bands don’t play festivals in ireland is simply the timing of their EU tours, then promoters only options is outdoor shows such as malahide, marlay, trinity, iveagh, st Anne’s, fairview. Early September is historically a bad time for festivals as it’s the last gasp. Many international bands concentrate on late May/June or July/august for their 5 or 6 week summer run.

Over the last decade, between EP, ATN and Forbidden they have captured an Enormous amount of festival calibre acts.

What kind of work has our man Jerry been doing? He's seen the line up, he wants to save us doesn't he?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 150 ✭✭rockterrain

Your staunch defence of the calibre of acts of EP, Forbidden Fruit and ATN is baffling. Anyone with a cent of wherewithal can see they don't stack up by international standards. The main acts as you rightly pointed out do their own standalone shows where in other countries they'd be part of a festival bill - multiple cases in point but a few recent examples discussed in this thread for this summer include James, Liam Gallagher and Fontaines DC.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,559 ✭✭✭Rocket_GD

I would disagree with this point, the people who think Calvin Harris is amazing probably wouldn't be more into The Chemical Brothers or The Prodigy. Harris is far more pop like dance than the others and as someone mentioned earlier on majority of his songs have a popular female artist singing over them eg Ellie Goulding and Dua Lipa. He's nearly a completely different genre.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,435 ✭✭✭Fanirish

James headlined a festival here last year, Fontaines have played EP and ATN in the last 3 years of festivals here (ATN 19, EP 22) so those acts do regularly play festivals and aren’t skipping them per se.
the likes of EP, ATN and Forbidden do stack up very respectfully for 70k, 35k and 10k capacity festivals in europe in the months they are one for the genres they attempt to cover.
go check their accounts, none of them are licences to print millions upon millions of euro and offering cheapo acts.

EP is the largest festival in Ireland and it's the 20th anniversary, yet we are being served up Kodaline (Has beens at best), Noah Khan (might be), Gerry Cinnamon (never was), Calvin Harris (irrelevant for years) and Raye (whoever that is). It's a shocker and no sleight of hand with Spotify streams will convince the majority of people on this thread otherwise.
