Coppinger won't get support in Castleknock, (and I would really question a vote for her is really a vote for change…) but the Castleknock LEA also contains Fortlawn, Sheepmoor, Whitestown and the Blanch centre.

There are plenty of people to elect at least one hard-left candidate, Coppinger's problem will be if SF hoover up all those votes.

if any of the major political parties got serious about the growing influx of economic migrants claiming asylum (like the Social Democrats in Denmark), then these extremes would be out of business overnight.

When Paul won his Dail seat, Sinn Fein appointed his wife as a councillor to replace him, it looks like straight-forward nepotism.

So all the stuff on her posters about a rich country and funding health and education (which councillors have nothing to do with) are not promises but just empty talk?

Which is it? Empty talk or promises she can't keep? Or a mixture of both?

It's quite common that a family member would replace them in that situation. I have had to deal with Angela, and all of the local councillors, in my work and she blew me away. Beyond helpful and committed to getting the problem sorted. There's only about two others I'd put in that boat and none of them in my LEA 😢

They absolutely wouldn’t, they’d just find some other “cause” to rally around. They don’t really give a shyte about immigration, they just need something to be angry about

Perhaps because she was a long time SF activist. I remember her as far back as 1996/7 Are you suggesting she shouldn't be in the frame because or her relationship to PD?

It will have a more receptive audience there anyway.

Yes, but they wouldn't have any electoral appeal niche which all the major parties are ignoring?

Combined with the fact that successive governments have refused to even carry out policies/laws, like deportations: https://www.rte.ie/news/politics/2024/0423/1445065-cabinet-latest/

Not applying the law making it illegal to arrive without documents:

    https://www.oireachtas.ie/en/debates/debate/dail/2024-01-18/30/

And the main opposition in recent years, Sinn Fein, have even more critical of any attempts at enforcement (they're making different noises now, but nothing concrete).

Re: Ruth Coppinger being a Marxist. That certainly her background, and there's plenty of references to "socialism" on her social media. But its hard to find many references to any such socialist economic policies on her socials. Apart from the understandable local community items, it looks in order of preference that these are her main topics:

    1. Gaza, 2. BLM - "anti-racism" (as opposed to being against racism), 3. Trans , 4. misogyny/feminism

Did they change the LEA boundaries? Seems like every road has a different set of posters on the lamp posts.

That's horrific! Tania is one of the others I've been incredibly impressed with during my work dealings with the Councillors

should we expect to see callers to the door for these elections, or do they not bother?

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,780 ✭✭✭Former Former Former

you should be absolutely ashamed of yourself making excuses for these scumbags

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,085 ✭✭✭✭Caranica

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,719 ✭✭✭donaghs

Its disgusting to try and link me to that disgusting attack.

I simply made a point about any mainstream political party should address the concerns of the vast majority of people over illegal immigration.
    https://www.irishtimes.com/ireland/social-affairs/2024/02/10/majority-favour-more-closed-immigration-policy-to-reduce-number-of-people-coming-to-ireland/#:~:text=Almost%20six%20in%2010%20voters,it%20has%20been%20a%20negative.

(No need for tighter rules, just enforce the rules)

Then this would remove the electoral niche appeal of the extremists.

Unless you consider the vast majority of Irish people who always poll the same as “making excuses for the scumbags”?

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,780 ✭✭✭Former Former Former

I'm sure you don't agree with attacking public reps, but when you blame anyone else other than these c**ts for their actions, then yes, it is making excuses for them.

If we all start engaging in arson, violence and intimidation every time there's a difficult political issue that we don't like, where does that leave us?

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,085 ✭✭✭✭Caranica

Ruth Coppinger posted that two Social Democrats were also attacked putting up posters in the area

  • Registered Users Posts: 143 ✭✭A Knight of Ireland

Of course she did - as she take a massive jump onto the Bandwagon 🙈

On a side note, I have noticed quite a few posters have been interfered with. Whatever your politics, this shouldn't happen.

Turned in from the intended direction (Siobhan Shovlin's)

Cable Ties cut meaning the poster is falling over (I think it was John Walsh's one)

Swastika was cut into Ruth Coppinger's poster. She has a picture of it on her Twitter Page

I also watched Primetime interview with Tania Doyle and her husband. Shocking stuff and I hope they get the thug that did that to them.

This election is really turning nasty when its not even a general election but a local council election. Do people not understand the powers that these councillors will have if they get elected?? I know its the bottom rung of a ladder but still…..

Anyone know what the story is with the Green Party candidate registered for Blanchardstown Mulhuddart? No posters, no leaflets, no canvassers and haven't heard a peep. He is showing on the candidate list on the Fingal website though.

Impressed at the number of canvassers that have come to the door compared to other local elections. Saves a lot of stuff going in the recycling pile when I can tell them to hold on to their literature 😂

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,374 ✭✭✭suvigirl

I haven't had anyone call to the door at all, except for the local Sinn Fein candidate. Plenty of rubbish in the door though!

  • Registered Users Posts: 95 ✭✭ultraviolence

im guessing you havent heard a peep from that green candidate in blanch-mulhuddart as it was a last minute decision with no preparation. So desparate to gain seats that they're having to asking non locals to run in areas they dont reside in.

Must not be easy to run in an election in area you dont live in. Makes canvassing difficult and time consuming. No posters as well, wow!

If canvassing in area you dont live in is difficult then i dont want to imagine how difficult it is to become a councillor and representing people and their issues….

I wonder will he put that information in his leaflet. Being a green party rep for a different part of dublin over a number of years is valuable information. But if he decides not to for whatever reason at least that information is available online.

  • Registered Users Posts: 143 ✭✭A Knight of Ireland

Yeah….or I would wonder what would his level of commitment to the area be if he cannot be bothered to even to get out and canvass. Actually I haven't seen most of the candidate before anyway so he might as well run :-) They are like that beach in Achill that appears out of the ocean every few years and then disappears

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,167 ✭✭✭hardybuck

It seems as though a number of candidates aren't living or from the areas they're running in - and that's probably not that unusual. For example there's probably 3 candidates running in the Castleknock LEA who don't appear to live in the area.

I haven't seen most of the candidates at all (or those canvassing for them) in any capacity. One candidate came around last year, and we've had two other candidates come around in the last 2-3 months.

There are six seats and only ten candidates - so it may not be as competitive as other areas.

So far I've had FF, Soc Dems, an Independent (the sound one, not the racist), PBP and FG to the door. With 10 days to go I'm impressed that they're actually canvassing Waterville, they don't tend to for general elections but I guess there's more people eligible for local elections.

Very interesting that not a single candidate has referenced the Party European Election candidate.

First count in my ward of Mulhuddart. 5 seats. Quota 1025 with a dismal 32.5% turnout.

    1. Mary McCamley Labour 685
    2. JK Onwumerah Fianna Fail 665
    3. Steve O'Reilly Fine Gael 572
    4. Breda Hanapy Sinn Fein 523
    5. John Burthchael Solidarity PBP 478
    6. Robbie Loughlin Aontu 467
    7. Patrick Quinlan National Party 456
    8. Lorna Nolan Fianna Fail 437
    9. Damian Bissett Sinn Fein 403
    10. Suzanne Delaney Independent 388
    11. Neil Dowling Soc Dems 365
    12. Louise Kavanagh Sinn Fein 313
    13. Shaskant Chakerwati Independent 162
    14. Andy Heasman Independent 139
    15. Green Party 95

This is going to be interesting with everyone way off a quota. Sinn Fein with 3 candidates should get one over the line. JK Onwunerah should get enough transfers from Lorna Nolan to get home. Labour need Soc Dem transfers. FG candidate has no obvious source of transfers. PBP looks vulnerable in 5th, hard to see him maintaining it. The National Party have done well, as have Aontu. Looks to be aseat between them here. Delaney in tenth was hardcore anti-immigration also so her transfers should get Aontu or NP over the line.

Likely result. 1 x Labour, 1 x FF, 1 x SF, either National Party or Aontu for 1 seat, and FG v PBP in a battle for 5th seat.

In Castleknock Ruth Coppinger looks ok for the 6th seat so A Knight in Irelands take of 'no support for her in Castleknock' was as inaccurate as most of his previous predictions. Aontu polling strong here as well.

Ongar had a low turnout (37.95%) as well. After the 1st count Tania Doyle (ind) was elected, she got 24.1% of the 1st prefs.

I'd think Angela Donnelly (SF) will get a seat, as will one of the FF candidates (Tom Kitt). That leaves 2, so perhaps Kieran Dennison (FG) and Gerard Sheehan (Aon) as both got around 10% of 1st prefs and will probably get transfers.

If that were to happen, then the only change would be the Greens predictably losing their seat to Aontu. But maybe this isn't as simple as it looks - Doyle got many votes and she was the only independent running, transfers might be unpredictable.
