I think considering where the access to the DLC is, you'll be expected to be at least maybe Lvl80 or so. I assume though that if the difficulty scales for higher levels, it probably scales downwards to some degree too, unless they have a minimum baseline that they don't go below.

I'd say the difficulty scaling probably relates more to amount of damage done by enemies and their HP, to scale to your HP and attack power. So even if you're underlevelled, so long as you're not taking too much damage it'll just be a case of taking longer to kill enemies.

I remember going to Ariaendel early in DS3 and was immediately getting wrecked!!

Guess with the DLC entrance being so easily missable it makes sense players would be higher level

According to Fextralife it's similar to having to defeat bosses to get their memories that let you level your attack power etc.

Saw this and reminded me of my first couple of sessions with the game on launch, very similar to others but still damn mental. Oh a knight on a horse, bet i can take him... RUN AWAY ... Oh a lake with low level enemies, easy... WHERE DID THAT DRAGON COME FROM??!! RUN AWAY..... Oh a chest.... Great I've been warped to a deadly cave RUN AWAY.... Finally, made it out of the cave.. Why is the sky red??. Checks map... WHERE THE **** AM I???!!

I cannot wait to see what the dlc has in store for us.

The first few days of a From game are the best. Everybody is just trying to figure it out, the noobies/future From perverts are bitching it's too hard and nobody has a decent walkthrough.

Demon's Souls was wild. Everything seemed to be communicated through wikis and forums and I got into it late enough. Even trying to find that game was an ordeal as Sony vastly underestimated the demand for the English language Asian release.

I have been playing through The Convergence mod on PC the last week.

AddsAdd loads of new starting classes, weapons, spells and effects into the game. It also overhauls many of the game areas and alters progression and enemy levelling so they feel fresh.

It is in Alpha so the balancing feels off in some areas, for instance Stormveil is now one of the harder areas rather than an early game dungeon amd halfway through the enemies seem to jump in difficulty

Some of the area reworks are a bit rough in the sense that the AI has a hard time with pathing.

But overall have to say I'm enjoying it. It's tough at the start but once you level up a bit it's more enjoyable.

Just passed the capital last night and heading for the mountain tops now so should get the playthrough done in the next while.

Bought this when it came out and played maybe 30 mins will have to start it properly

Can't for the life of me beat Maliketh in The Convergence mod playthrough, I've beat this guy many times in vanilla so not sure if his timings have changed or ive jus got worse at the game🤣

Closest I've got is he has about 5% health second phase .

Evey other major boss pre erdtree burning is done except for him and Malenia. Haven't really tried her yet though.

Is been really nice having to figure stuff out again though, there's no wiki or anything for the mod yet so can't even look up stuff online.

An example being the imbued stone sword keys, all moved from vanilla locations and much more useful in the mod than in vanilla to my surprise when I used one after finding it randomly.

Found 3 of the 4 so far, no idea where the fourth is so still on the hunt for it and have to see where it brings me, I've revisited 4 major dungeons so far on the hunt but no joy on the last one.

Sme of the custom bosses have been a real challenge too, I've found plenty so far, not sure what to expect post erdtree burning either, might be more of them

I hope this helps: using mods you are messing with one of the finest and most carefully balanced game ever made, so you fully deserve it.

Love the game and have no interest in overhaul mods, but ‘carefully balanced’ Elden Ring most certainly is not 😅

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,104 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Yeah I'm not accepting it either. Whatever about the sniper lobsters but getting ganked by three crystal enemies when my character was not specced against their only weakness was a nightmare. Some of those dungeon bosses had some wild fluctuations in difficulty and a lot of them were like 'what about if we had 2... No 3 of that really annoying boss with a tracking overhead'.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,289 ✭✭✭Cordell

Oh you mean balanced against you? No, but it's a fine balance between accessible enemies and really horrible ones.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,477 ✭✭✭✭Penn

I would absolutely consider the game balanced, considering the sheer amount of viable builds and permutations your own character can be, the level of enemies in different areas when balanced against the level you'll likely be when you get there in a normal playthrough (barring trap portals which send you to Caelid early etc), and the numerous ways you can just avoid or bypass enemies (compared to the more linear nature of previous Souls games). Not to mention the summons and incredible weapon arts.

In fact one of the main reasons I think Elden Ring is one of the greatest games of all time is the balance they were able to achieve and how they made arguably a more balanced game than most of the previous Souls games while taking Elden Ring open world and with more weapons and tools at your disposal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,579 ✭✭✭EoinHef

The mod is quite good actually.

I'm ok with it being tougher in some places. I'll just have to git gud😊

I've finished the game multiple times in vanilla so was looking for something a little different which the mod has provided.

I'd also agree vanilla ER is one of the best games ever made, exceptional in every area

The Spirit Ashes feature made this game a lot more accessible. It made some bosses trivial if used correctly.

Just about to start this and never really played any of the Dark Souls games. Any general tips for starting off?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,104 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Don't skip the tutorial area which is down a big hole. Having a good roll is more important than heavy armour. And the big horse guy outside the starting area, leave him alone until you are ready.

Other tips would be to not be afraid to look stuff up if you feel lost or confused. Also if you are having trouble with the main story path, there's an area down south which is low level and is worth exploring as well.

And stay away from Caelid at the start... Shudder.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,477 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Dying isn't a failure, it's a game mechanic. You will die a lot at the start, especially as it's your first Souls type of game, but that's okay. You lose your collected runes (currency) when you die, but if you get back to where you died (without dying again), you can collect the runes you lost.

Other than that, if an enemy is too hard for you, try to avoid it and leave it until later. When levelling up, don't level everything. It's better to focus on particular builds, so level Strength or Dexterity (but not both), and Faith or Intelligence. But at the start anyway, focus on levelling Vigor (health) and Endurance (Stamina).

Also, don't get surrounded by enemies. Pick them off slowly, and don't be afraid to run away if you're getting swamped.

As Retro says, don't be afraid to look things up, ask here, or Google for advice. These games aren't great at explaining things.

    Other than that, enjoy!

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,104 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

One other thing is don't be put off if you lose a rake of runes to a death early on. What you lose will be absolute pittance to what you get off single enemies later on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,289 ✭✭✭Cordell

While I'm old enough to have been gaming when first souls game came out it wasn't until Elden Ring that I actually enjoyed one. So you're not alone in this.

Farm runes when you're stuck. You will know when you find a group of enemies ripe for farming.

One other thing about build. Don't be afraid if you screw up your build, early in the game you will get the ability to redistribute all your stats so even if you messed up or are intimidated by it you can respect very easily. It's a lot easier to respect in Elden ring than any other.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,477 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Definitely. I just remember my first go of a Souls game (well, Bloodborne), I hampered myself by trying to level everything at the start because I didn't understand you're more supposed to pick certain skills to focus on for different builds.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,286 ✭✭✭✭MadYaker

Maybe personal preference but the first 4 or 5 times you level up I would put all those points into vigor so that you have enough HP to tank a couple of hits from regular enemies. It'll make learning the combat easier since you've not played these type of games before. Then once you've levelled up a few times and started to figure the game out you can decide what type of character you want to build, strength / dexterity or intelligence / faith or whatever.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,104 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Vigor is poo. You are better off taking down enemies with less hits. HP goes up so little with vigor it doesn't make all that much of a difference while putting it on dex or str depending on build with a good scaling weapon can be the difference between taking an enemy out in 2 or 3 hits. I find in these games the longer an enemy is left alive the more chance they have of ruining our day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,493 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

I'd say a good mix of Strength/Dexterity and Endurance are your best bet starting off. Being able to have a few extra attacks and blocks before needing to recharge the endurance bar.

What if the story trailer is like "so there i was, just a regular tarnished bro minding my own business, when a FREAKING dragon appeared out of nowhere? So yeah, pretty screwed right? Well not with my freaking Moonveil, take that bruh!"..... Yeah, who am i kidding, would still be day 1.

You say that like we all play From games for the story instead of playing them to be punished and looking up the story on vaati Vidya.

Isn't the voiceover done by the little one who hung around Round Table hold and helped you with Spirit Ashes?

Booted up Elden Ring for the first time in absolute yonks. Just fast travelled to a few different spots to do a little bit of combat. Everything feels a bit empty since I killed everything though, but even basic enemies were giving me bother since I'm so rusty.

I might mess around with my second character and jump into NG+ with it to at least take a crack at some of the early game areas and get used to the game again (without having to use basic weapons and spells). Still plan on using my main character for the DLC without being on NG+ though. If the DLC scales to your level regardless, I don't think me being Lvl210 will matter much.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭Zero-Cool

I have 1 save on ps4 version with end game character and 1 save on ps5 that's mid game and i don't know which one to use for dlc. I think maybe the ps4 version as i find the fps on ps5 version to actually impact the combat for me. And i can can just jump straight into the dlc but yeah, I'll be absolutely rusty out to go straight into end game content so need to brush up on it before release.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,477 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Just thought to check my main character because it dawned on me that I've used all my Ancient Somber Smithing Stones. I have two of the normal Ancient Smithing Stones, but used all the Somber ones. I'm sure there'll be a few more in the DLC (or hopefully a way to buy them), but that may be the thing that makes me consider doing NG+ (that and the fact I could get another Wing of Astel and dual-wield them).

    Decisions decisions….

Just checked and it seems shader stutter is still an issue with this game on PC. Hoping they have a fix for the launch of the DLC but I doubt they will.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,477 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Decided to try out NG+ with my second character just to see what it was like. Respecced to a Strength/Faith build rather than Arcane (I was using Mohg's Spear towards the end of that build), as I wanted to use Malekith's Black Blade which I'd never used before.

Started NG+, took down the enemies in the training area as well as the Soldier of Godrick. Wasn't doing as much damage as I'd have thought, but assumed that was just due to NG+. Took down Tree Sentinel first try but still a tough fight. A few random enemies later it dawned on me, I respecced my build to use Malekith's Blade, but never upgraded the weapon itself. It was still at it's base level. No wonder it wasn't doing as much damage as I thought. F*cking dumbass…. I'll be able to level it up when I reach Roundtable but for now having to use the Assassin's Black Knife which I'd half levelled up and is one of the only upgraded weapons I have which suits the new build.

I will say though, the Dualsense Edge controller is making a huge difference. Being able to have one of the backpaddles as Circle means I can sprint/dodge but also move the camera at the same time, and the other paddle as Down means I can switch between flasks/items in battle while still using the analogue stick to move.

Spun this up again, loaded up my ps5 version and had no recollection of my current build. Save said i was 2 hours into the game and prisoner build with estoc and septer. I have no recollection of this at all, had to look up a video on how to use quick menu to call horse. I was in a tomb which i cleared out handy enough and used magic arrows on the boss that felt way too easy and reminded me of how i don't like magic builds in souls games so now I'm stuck on deciding to keep going with this, go back to a sword and board build or just reload my ps4 version end game with Gof of Blood build before the dlc comes out.

It's mad how smoother the ps4 version runs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,477 ✭✭✭✭Penn

If you're only 2 hours in, it probably wouldn't take long to change up your build. I've always found in these games that magic builds are pretty awful until after mid-game where you have access to better and more spells. But yeah it took ages for me to get used to the controls again. Even after getting on the horse, I couldn't figure out how to get back off it (L3).

I'm still going with my NG+ run on my second character. Was doing it without summons but started to hit a wall so Mimic Tear has made a return. Also picked up my second Wing of Astel yesterday so have switched from a Blasphemous Blade build to dual Wing of Astel Int/Dex build. Blasphemous Blade if anything felt a bit too OP at times, and too slow at others. Finished Ranni's quest so ready to start hitting Altus Plateau and Leyndell. Still think I'll just do the DLC on my main NG character.

There's one thing I'd really love to be in the DLC. I don't care how brutal, difficult and pure arseholey he is in a fight, but give me a Bell-Bearing Hunter to fight so I can buy Ancient Dragon Stones and level up whatever weapons I want. Let me make whatever build and use whatever weapon at its highest level. I don't mind having to farm for millions of runes each time (RIP Albunarics), but 8 Ancient Dragon Somber Stones per playthrough isn't enough when you have a bajillion cool-ass weapons, staffs, seals and viable build combinations in the game. Or even let Hewg downgrade a weapon and get the stone back. Let me buy Larval Tears too, just in case.

So many weapons and builds I'd love to try, but it's hard to properly try them out and compare them to what you normally use because you can't get the most out of them. And at endgame/NG+ having your weapons at +25/+10 is pretty vital. It's such a long game that either starting a NG+ run or even a new game entirely takes ages to get to the point where you get the top upgrade weapons and upgrade materials.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭Zero-Cool

Yeah think I'll use my NG character for the dlc and hope my stats are able to equip some new items, I'm sure From will have something for everyone. I still have areas to complete in NG so will use those as a way to shake off rust.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,477 ✭✭✭✭Penn

That's part of the reason I had to jump into NG+ with my secondary character. On my main character, I explored and did pretty much everything. Every cave, catacomb, ruins, got all the legendary talismans, weapons etc, beat all the main and minor bosses, did absolutely everything I could find. There were no more worlds for me to conquer…

I had most of the same done on my second character (as I used it to complete the platinum with the other endings) so just said I'd use it for NG+ to get back into the swing of things. Have gotten totally sucked back in though so going to finish off this playthrough.

The DLCs usually give you a few high end upgrade materials. I remember having ran out of them in bloodborne but the DLC giving you a few more for the new weapons which let me build the buzzsaw of death.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,477 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Yeah I definitely expect there to be a few in the DLC, but they'll also be adding in a bunch of new weapons too so most of them might be used for those. I just think that you should be able to buy them, even if it's only after beating the DLC.

Yup 😁. Any time I want to try a new build:

"Fast travel to Rennala. Respec. Cancel respec because I forgot the requirements for the weapon I want to use. Check that. Respec again. Equip new weapons. Fast travel to Roundtable. Go to Hewg. Level up weapon. How the f*ck do I have no Somber Stone 6 but I have thirteen 5's and eight 7's? Run to the twin maiden husks (ewww…. rebrand your shop name). Buy Somber Stone 6. Run back to Hewg. F*ck I have no 8's either! Run to husks. Run to Hewg. Get it to +9 (because I'm out of the Ancient Stones). Fast travel to Caelid to try new build. Ahh…. it's not great. Fast travel to Rennala. What'up homegirl!…. and so on…."

Just started a new playthrough last night as a Dex build. Last time i was a Mage so i missed out on a LOT of physical weapons to mess around with.

Any advice for a Dex build? Probably wont be levelled enough in time for the DLC.
