Yep- considering criminal proceedings are underway, that pretty much trumps any other non criminal enquiry that might normally take place under the recall of MPs act such as standards of conduct -in a circumstance where an MP was just taking the pizz and indeed the salary but doing feic all else, that committee would probably take up the enquiry - he’s still innocent under the eyes of the law but I imagine his mind is preoccupied naturally enough - there’s little else any political group or committee can do until this current criminal proceedings has concluded

Whether the guy is guilty or innocent is beside the point imo, he's entitled to his fair trial but how does a guy who is not turning up for work get paid a fine big salary every month.

Why the sudden concern for the constituents of Lagan Valley ?

He can't be subject to a recall position unless and until the standards committee makes a finding against and imposes a 10 sitting day ban, or if wee Jeffrey is convicted and sentenced to detention, and all his appeals have been exhausted. If he is sentenced to greater than 12 months and it is an automatic disqualification. None of those outcomes are likely to happen before this parliament rises for a GE.

He will continue to draw his MP pay, and subsequently his parachute money and his pension while the case wends it's way to conclusion.

My thoughts are with the victims, and the impact upon their wider families and community. It has been a very trying few months for many in Co Down and no doubt, more to come.

Should absolutely be suspended, until criminal cases are finished

Which of the early US presidents offered to do the job for free, just expenses, and they forced him to take a salary because it would cost less overall.

Which MP got insane expenses for inkjet cartridges ?

Lots of people are suspended from work with pay while an investigation takes place. And I don't think he's suspended from the House of Commons. There are very few rules on how many house sittings an MP has to miss before they'd have their pay docked. And I bet there are loads of exceptions like illness or bereavement or extraordinary life circumstances making it impractical or unhelpful to attend Parliament. Everyone would be happier to pay him rather than him having to turn up to Westminster and sit in the chamber.

Like I say, it might feel wrong but innocent unless proved guilty is an important standard and I'm happy to maintain it even if I'm not delighted by the consequence. The rule of law is far more important than feelings about him being paid. It's not really that important in the broad picture

I think the DUP is falling apart to be honest, loyalists are dying out too the newer generations want something different, I also Think the 12th July is a waste as well but obviously that's coming from someone south of the border

Yeah as a southerner the 12th obviously means nothing to me except riots of course given I’ve been watching it on the news now for 5 decades 🤪

They need to reinvent themselves - I’d say to the young, they’re mostly dinosaurs - with a lot more young people in 3rd level education, these so called “barriers” and ways of thinking will become the realm of a very reduced hardened minority within the Protestant community - young people just want to see a bright future which is perfectly understandable - prancing around in bibs banging a drum won’t do it for most of them

There are real issues in the PUL community regarding education - very low achievement for far too many, while at the other end many go to colleges in GB and never come back.

Say what you want about our loyalist cousins, they do a cracking bonfire .

A lot of that is historically tied to the substantial number of pretty well paid jobs that didn't require an education but were available almost entirely to the PUL Community which led to a significant difference in how the two communities valued education.

When you have their largest political party widely espouse young earth creationism, they have a vested interest in not solving the problem.

I heard a clip of some DUP wan claiming St. Patrick was protestant. When pointed out there were no protestants back then, she tried to say, he was, just not in name.

I'd assume that was a video of Ruth Patterson. It has been argued by posters on this very site.

Arguments tend to focus on how his brand of Christianity was outside the control of Rome and drawing comparisons between his early church and that of modern CoI or Presbyterianism depending on who you're talking to.

Since his mission wasn't officially commissioned by Rome, one could argue that he wasn't entirely Catholic as such (though apparently in his own writings, he referred to the Roman Church as his brothers, so he identified as one), though it is a fierce jump from that to claiming him for a church that didn't exist at this point.

Given my own complete and utter lack of faith, I'd look at it all as a bit quirky but fairly harmless.

Horrible story. So bad, people here aren't even speculating on what might have happened because writing it into words feels horrible.

It was a nonsense statement to have a go at the other community. Didn't King Billy take money off the Pope? We could go on and on.

TBF, we pretty much know what the allegations are. Details all over twitter and elsewhere.

I think the mod ban is why posters here are not speculating (more).

Oh I'm aware of exactly what it is,. I'd view it as insecurity more than anything, certainly not something I'm losing any sleep over. I was just sharing the pseudo-academics behind the position.

I spoke about this when he was charged, got a warning,as we can't discuss court cases ,it's in nth Ireland, which last time I checked is still in the u.k,but you can discuss Donald Trump court cases no problem and various court cases in the u.k in the past .

Looking at this, it appears that the main offences happened since 1985.

Seems as though Donaldsons daughters were born in 1990 and 1992.

So maybe not a case as clearcut as first anticipated by most. However, involvement of Mrs. Donaldson in parallelit seems likely in my mind that this will still go the way of a conviction.

    https://www.rte.ie/news/courts/2025/0221/1498167-eleanor-donaldson/

The wife of former DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson has asked a court to strike out two charges she faces, linked to the sex offences case involving her husband.

Eleanor Donaldson is facing five charges including aiding and abetting Mr Donaldson.

Last September, 58-year-old Eleanor Donaldson pleaded not guilty to three of the charges.

Her defence team made an application to have two other charges withdrawn.
